Didn't know that a Joy Division, a band which was heavily influenced by The Stooges, reformed as a new band without their lead singer as New Order in 1980? One of the founding members of The Stooges, Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, started a new band in 1977 without Iggy Pop and called it The New Order, with a "The" I believe on the album cover.
Hard to believe that Bernard and the band were totally unaware, but it was well before the internet age of information... doesn't seem to be mentioned much thou in stories about New Order. I dunno if the band mentioned it at the time.
At least they did not have to be called New Order UK in the USA, that woulda been lame.
I read somewhere that, by this point, Ron Ashton was living hand to mouth and had formed The New Order as a last ditch, like that Velvet Underground album where the only member is Doug Yule.

Have you read the articles from Kevin Hewick about his experience with New Order? The poor guy received one of Barney's famous wraths.
I suppose this is the greatest of the...er..."Kevin Hewick myths" that is actually true...my first ever recording session was with Hook, Morris and Sumner a month after Ian Curtis's death. Totally unrehearsed, and with me in awe of the former Joy Divisioners (I overheard Peter Hook tell the engineer they'd decided on the name New Order the night before. When I pointed out that Ron Asheton, ex of the Stooges, had already used that name for a band I was told "That doesn't matter, nobody's ever heard of them !!!), the session wasn't a great success. To top it all "producer" Martin Hannett walked in several hours late (straight from an all night John Cooper Clarke session), said "It sounds like Fairport convention" and then immediately lay down on the floor and fell asleep under the mixing desk. Yes, I was out of my depth alright......The assembled "backing" band told the engineer at the beginning of the session that they'd decided to call themselves "New Order". when Hewick pointed out that Rob Asheton (former member of the Stooges) had formed a band called the New Order, a clearly annoyed Bernard shot back "only you would know that."...Hewick, who was utterly in awe of the backing band assembled for his humble session, pointed out to Bernard that the two note guitar solo he was playing was from buzzcock's "Boredom" and was stunned when Bernard, threw his Gibson SG down on the floor and stormed out. This so unnerved Hewick that he was unable to complete any other songs for the session.

The "fact" quoted in the Wikipedia entry comes from Hooky stating as much in an interview. But do you really believe that's the true inspiration for the name? He was obviously just winding up the interviewer at the time.
Or was he?
What makes you so sure he wasn't winding up the Iggy/Stooges fans?
On topic. Didn't have a scooby myself, wouldn't have cared if they'd called themselves "I can't belive it's not Iggy Pop and The Stooges"
I have had "The New Order - Declaration of War" LP in my collection for many years! Have to say though that I have not played it for a while as I remember it as being a bit ropey.
Have to say though that given Hooky is a self confessed Stooges nut he would have been aware of this LP before naming the band. I have always been a bit suspicious of the official source of the name New Order - something about an article in the Guardian about the Khymer Rouge in Ethiopia or something.
I suppose admitting that you named the band after the Nazi Uniform wearing Ron Asheton's band would have been a wee bit controversial!

It's Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if they had Nazism in their mind, but I personally don't care. I too have a fascination for Nazism without being a Nazi myself.

Hooky has met George Michael (through Peter Saville), but that doesn't mean he would seriously name his band after the former Wham!ster's fashion accessory. It would be funny if that was the case but the Iggy/Stooges/Asheton connection is impossible to ignore.
