Manchester Music Scene

Hi there,

I am gathering info on the Music Manchester scene of the last 35 years, the aim is to write a book on it. There is a questionnaire at this address and I invite anyone interested about the subject to go there and complete it. It takes 2-3 minutes only. The main reason for that questionnaire is because I would like my book to be a strongly fan-based document of a love for a band/CD/type of music... etc, with many references to message boards and fans opinions. And Joy Division and New Order and Factory Records have been so documented that, really, that approach is a bit of a waste. This is the link to the questionnaire

Why stop at 35 years? 1972/3 seems like an arbitrary start point and misses one of the most important periods in Mcr pop music history: the 1960s. There was a fascinating music scene in Manc back then, every bit as vital as London and Liverpool.

The most famous gig of all time was held at the Free Trade Hall in 1966; surely you're not going to ignore that?

Quite a lot of important 60s bands came from Manchester and everyone played the Twisted Wheel. My Dad would keep you up all night telling stories about the bands he saw there - believe me he's done kept me entertained for all these years! Sure Liverpool got all the headlines, but Manchester was every bit as important.

Good luck with your book. It better be good to compete with all the others; most of them written by people who were in and around the scene they're writing about.

Hi there, loads of thanks for your message, get me all the phone numbers you can, get me in touch with your Dad, mate, I would love to have a chat with him. The reason why I am starting in around 1976 is, you know, because of the famous Sex Pistols gig, and Joy Division comes from those years.And Tony Wilson, whose personality I would like to document more in detail. You see, I don't know whether my book is going to be good or not, I don't even have a publisher yet, mate, but, boy, if a band like JD-NO came out of them WANTING to do something musically, so I am going to WANT to write a book. I am no David Nolan, unfortunately, good book Confusion. By the by, any interest about answering a few questions on New Order and their music? Nothing personal, not interested on personal stuff, nop, just basic reflections about their music and use of instruments, electronic sound and so on. What about the Northern Soul Scene that was centred around the Twisted Wheel? thats very much part of the 'manchester scene' but most people forget this.
