Area:One San Francisco

I just saw them play at Shoreline in Mountain View (near San Francisco / San Jose), California tonight. Wow, what a rush! I thought after missing their 1993 tour I would never get to see them play live in the US. It was great!

Their set list was very similar to Fuji's, but no Love Vigilantes and no Ruined in a Day. The set seemed quick -- no encore. Gillian wasn't there -- is she on the tour? Billy Corgan played backup guitar for the entire set. There was also a guy playing keyboards and guitars, presumably in Gillian's slot.

At one point Bernard got pissed with the smoke/fog machines and cursed, then later apologized. He also muttered something about a guy in the audience and said something to the audience about the guy in the audience's dick being big like his (Bernard's).

New Order was 3rd in the lineup of 5 bands at Shoreline's Area:1 Concert. First was Rinocerose, then the Roots, then New Order, then Outkast, and lastly Moby. There was also a large tent with guest DJs but I didn't see that. Outkast seemed to be the most popular with the crowd.

They put on a good show. I like Crystal much better live that what I've heard on the net. In terms of sound quality, they were in between sounding like the BBC1 concert CD from 1987 and the 1993 Reading Festival CD which is in heavy rotation in my car player.

I was there. They were worth the price of admission alone, even if they only had an hour to complete their set (6:45-7:45). Had I known what time they were to come on I would of shown up then. Moby was cool, not a huge fan but worth checking out nontheless.

As the previous poster stated, the set was quite similar to their earlier ones in Japan and England. Here is what I can remember, before I got way too into it and stopped keeping track:

*now here is where I stopped counting as I was too into the show. I'll do my best to remember, might miss one or get out of order:

I think that is it. I probably have it out of order, but I know they closed with Blue Monday as they have been.

Other things: Bernard announced every song beforehand, as he announced True Faith he said it's a new version, however this "new" version was exactly the same as the live one on the Japanese Crystal EP, from Redding 98 with the techno intro and the "they're all taking drugs with me" verse.

Corgan drew lots of applauses. He was the last one on stage still playing at the end of Blue Monday after the rest of the group walked off. After he set down his guitar the crowd erupted as he walked off.

I've never seen them live so I'm not up on the groups stage antics, but Barney and Hook were obiviously the most animated, Barney dancing and spinning around to the poppier tunes like Temptation. Peter was all over the place, his usual spot on the right, but he seemed to be everywhere else at one point. For part of one song he was all the way atop a walkway right of the stage, far off into the crowd. Billy was quite reserved, pretty much stood in the same spot the whole time.

After the set I went over to the DJ tent, Paul Oakenfold was on and as I arrived, what do I hear in the mix, Crystal! One of the dance versions no doubt. Obviously many the NO fans went over there afterwards, thought that was a cool jesture. Interestingly enough Oakenfold continued the mix with Prodigy's Narayan, cool for me to here 2 of my favorite groups mixed together.

As for NO t-shirts, they had 2 styles, a grey shirt with the Get Ready cover on the front and "New Order. Get Ready" on the back, "New Order" in a handwritten font, all colored red. The other shirt was a girls "baby T" I think its called with "New Order. Get Ready" printed on front in black. The price was $27, pretty steep but it was NO so I had to get one.

All in all a great show. NO obviously the highlight for me.

I came in from Salt Lake to see the show and also looked for newspaper articles the next day, with no success. However, this morning a coworker faxed me a review of the festival from Thursday's edition of the Chronicle. Here is what it had to say:

New Order, with former Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan on guitar, bridged the gap between '70s funk, disco and punk and the current wave of performers borrowing from all these genres. Their set, though plagued by sound problems, was a lush trip through an '80s memory lane that included Joy Division nostalgia ("Love Will Tear Us Apart"), New Order hits ("Temptation") and material from a new album.

There you are.

You missed it by a day. Today the San Jose Mercury News printed a review of Area: One, however it was covered by the Contra Costa Times, an newspaper on the other side of the Bay no less. But the cool thing was for the photo on the front of the section it was a picture of none other than Bernard Sumner!

Still, it was New Order who emptied the DJ tent. The band, largely invisible over the past decade, sounded fresh and grabbed attention from the start, and only partly because Corgan was onstage.

New Order unleashed an inspired parade of its '80s hits -- Blue Monday,' Bizarre Love Triangle,' True Faith,' and Love Will Tear Us Apart' from its days as Joy Division -- and looked to be having so much fun (with singer Bernard Sumner bouncily imitating an aerobics instructor) that one had to wonder why it has taken this band so long to come back.
