Hi there.
For some reason nothing can get released properly here in the US. The DVD release of Control was delayed 3 times, the release of the Glasgow DVD is nealy a minth after the UK release...
I have so far heard three DVD release dates for Grant Gee's Joy Division documentary here in the US..

Does anyone know the exact date this thing is supposed to come out?
netflix has gee's doc on june 17. Control was available on the third.
Edit: Netflix is usually accurate.
I already rented a copy from Blockbuster Online last week. I didn't expect to get it that fast, but it had a "Blockbuster Exclusive" sticker on it, so somehow they have a deal with the movie companies... but can't buy it yet...
...but get it for the movie, the extra features are boring, terrible, and not worth the time of watching...
It's out right now. I just bought it Tuesday. The store only got one copy and the manager was nice enough to put it aside for me.

I am also referring to the Gee documentary. Maybe the store wasn't supposed to sell it yet, but they did. To me. It's in my house. Right now.

i want to know, too. i can't be going back & forth to my local record shop.
This is really getting strange. The store I usually shop at is Newbury Comics, a chain in the Northeast. Their supplier sent them copies of Control a week late (which the manager was very unhappy about), so I had to get it at Best Buy. Now it seems they're getting copies of the documentary a week (or two) early. Don't know what's going on with these people, but it works for me! Those of you who haven't seen it can look forward to (SPOILER ALERT)
-a couple of appearances by Genesis P-Orridge
-superimposed footage of JD and NO performing "Shadowplay"
-asking yourself if Hooky has always had that mole on his chin. I've never noticed it before.

thanks Aries - that is my favorite brick and mortar store. I'll check it out. Strangely, even netflix had this as a June 17 forthcoming release.
okay - I'm confused as well. Is the Grant Gee documentary different/same as the JD - The Documentary that was showing in select theatres earlier this year?

"Control" is the other film that was mentioned - actors playing Joy Division.
I bought the documentary yesterday at Johnny Go's House of Music on High St.
Its fantastic! Beautifully filmed! Lots of good interview bits with Bernard, Hooky and Steve. The live JD archive footage looks great, and the New Order bit at the end is nicely done.
Some really interesting things...
Bernard actually named the band Joy Division! I didn't know that, always thought it was Ian, but Bernard says that he named the band.
Lots of cool insights into Rob Gretton's notebooks, revealing a man who is deep, thoughtful, and highly intelligent.
Some nice insights into the JD songwriting and recording process.
Genisis P. Orridge.....has he, uh......always looked like this?
Lovely mention of New Order at the end.

Extras...
Lots of really cool extra interview bits....including several mentions of Gillian, Steve fearing New Order will become a Joy Division tribute band...more clips from Rob Grettons notebooks...
Most interesting for me is an interview extra where Bernard talks about becoming fascinated with synths and electronic music and incorporating them into Joy Divisions sound, and Steve talking about using syn drums.
Bernard is wearing a very nice suit jacket with wingtipped lapels.
Steve is HILARIOUS, as is Tony Wilson.
I loved it. Totally worth the money. :)

Did you notice that for three weeks after the Skullys article ran, people wrote letters into the newspaper defending me and saying that Skully was wrong for what he did?
Not only was the public defence good, but it upped my CD sales in all of the local shops, as well as my plays and videos views on Myspace and Youtube. Used Kids, Johnny Go's, and Magnolia Thunderpussy all sold out of my record.
Petric writes about everything in a satirical manner. We had an agreement. He wrote that article the way he did because he and I both knew the result would be that my supporters would write in defending me. Not only would the public display of support strengthen my case, it would also piss Skully off, and it upped my CD sales.
So we both laughed all the way to the bank on that.
Outside of that...
I do Marketing for Universal. Petric is one of my best accounts.
And I am a huge fan of his writing. Have been since I was 12 years old.
Can't wait for next Tuesday, as Petric was kind enough to order the New Order Dvd for me.
John is a strange guy. He is a jerk on the surface, but underneath that he is a pretty intelligent and interesting guy.
so the Newbury Comics near my house (Saugus) had Control yesterday but neither the new documentary or Live in Glasgow (next week they said).
But I did pick up the new Cure single!
Rented the Documentary from Blockbuster online... was really good. I think it was perfect timing... hhighly suggest watching Control first then the Docu... perfect pairing, because the movie leaves a feeling lacking on the rest of the members, while the docu doesn't cover as much on Ian's issues (at least not in great depth)... perfect match really. What I really liked was that so much of the docu were from the bandmembers themselves, not Ian's next-door neighbor's barber or some random fan or shite like that. Full of good first-hand stories, not just stupid rehashing of crap we already know. If only NO Story could have been similar....
The "Extras" (interview outtakes) alone made this worth buying for me. I didn't know there were 4 menu screens of the stuff at first. The interviews and the candor which everyone speaks with makes the viewer gain insight into the feelings, experiences, observations of all those in or close to the band at the time.

John Petric has been getting kinda like a "cranky old man" in recent years. I don't really ever disagree with him but sometimes his writing seems more about his attitude than what he is writing about anymore. Good that there was something good behind that odd article.
