I often asked myself which songs they should pick in case they were to record such an album (I hope this thread hasn't been brought up yet:\ohwell: ) Here are my ten favourite trax:
Wouldn't it be cool if Paul McCartney was to rererecord all of John Lennon's and George Harrison's songs... and Townsend and Daultry could redo the Who's next album and give it some cleaner production... and the Sex Pistol's could rerecord Never Mind the Bullocks, that would be really good...
there are also the re-recorded Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart on the iTunes Originals "album," along with a couple re-recorded New Order tunes...
Someone should dig Leonardo up again, I was NEVER happy with Lisa's skin tones, modern pigments would be so much better.

it's odd though..everyone is cheering every time they do joyDivision songs live and we all bought 'in sessions' (which I at least I like a lot) and here some of us start whinging over the idea - incredible. Why caring about cover versions (I do remember people praising shadowplay by the killers, which was great - honestly) if they could do the best of them all?

As for the live and live "sessions" recordings... these were for fun, nostalgia, and to show respect for their past with Ian. An official remake album would be tacky and pointless, what would they add to the originals with Ian gone that would be justifiable?

Entering into the spirit of the thread, briefly and before breakfast, I always thought it took guts for Barney to sing the line 'people like you find it easy' and therefore Atmosphere took on a new meaning and significance for me when NO sang it. This, for me, is the only example of NO adding anything to a Joy Division track and I'd go as far to say that a decent live verson of Atmosphere by New Order (which I know most people consider to be an oxymoron) would beat any JD version. All the NO studio versions I've heard, however, have been utter pony.
I always liked seeing them play SLC or Warsaw or even Shadowplay. But not so much Shadowplay.
Oh, I quite like the dancier feel of Isolation on the Peel cd.
Dare I say that NO's version of Isolation is better. JD's version suffered for the lack of technology. Barney can handle it vocally. NO's Atmosphere while not better, Barney adds a warmness to the vocals that i think were missing before.

I thought that New Order did Heart and Soul, Transmission, Isolation, She's Lost Control, and In a Lonely Place really well. I agree with you about Barney siging Atmosphere, he does it beautifully....
I think that when New Order did the more electronic JD songs, it sounded better than them doing the rockier JD songs because Barney's voice could handle it.
I would have nice to have seen New Order do Decades or The Eternal myself.

it's fair enough to do them live,altho' I think LWTUA is a bit poor,but re-record them? What would be the point? As has already been said,the originals are definitive,so nah 
I did read Axl Rose wanted to re-record all of AFD so all the ex members would get less money - maybe this could be an option for Bernard
