Appalling.....but unfortunately not surprising these days.

This kind of shite is what really annoys me about some folks. I just watched control today, and have an even deeper respect for the late Mr. Curtis. How could someone steal a gravestone? What sick satisfaction can someone get out of it? Sorry to rant this to death, its just pathetic.

Hasn't Jim Morrison's grave suffered over the years too?

We had a speight of vandalism in our local Churchyard over the course of a year. Not to say any incident was worse than the other, but there was a 2 year old who died and his parents spent a lot of money on a teddy bear shaped grave and it was destroyed.

There's something seriously wrong with some people.

Jesus, what awful news - I hope that whoever did this has a conscience and brings it back for the sake of the Curtis family...

Jim Morrison's had to be re-located to an another area of the cemetery...

You have to be a pretty big saddo loser with nothing better to do than de-face graves and/or steal them!!!!

I'm actually going to Macclesfield in a couple of months (never been before), and had finally given a bit of consideration to visiting said landmark. *

* although, if truth be told, it was just a very fleeting thought and I will almost certainly just stop in the pub instead.

Yesterday I spoke to the member of staff who discovered the stone missing. The BBC has the date wrong - it may have disappeared Monday afternoon/evening as the discovery was at 8am Tuesday morning.

There is a replacement being made to the same design as the old stone, but it would still be better if the old one was returned.

The new one will be cemented down.

The thing that baffles everyone - is that the stones at Macclesfield are extremely heavy!

Hooky will sort it,he'll know some of the more 'underground' types from the Ashley Brook & put the word out

what a fucking twat ,, ive been going since 1980,, and was a bit miffed when some prat spilt paint on it ,, though its worn well and has many moving tributes attached over theyears.

as it was cemented down it must have been a bit of a effort to get out and whats going to happen with it,, here i am in my sad world looking at a stone , whilst everyone ,everywhere hates me,,,,prat, couldt they have made one ala blue peter

ruined in a day

Must have been more than one person, no?

So how does that work? How do you bring that up in conversation? What do you fancy doing later? Few beers? Curry? Film? Desecration of someone's fucking memorial stone?

Arseholes.

Just to say - the person at the crematorium told me that newer stones (and the forthcoming replacement) are cemented down. Ian's was one of several older stones that were dug into the ground.

If you were to try to remove a cemented stone it would break.

Steve has commented on the theft to MEN.

Despicable act to say the least.

If this has been done by a deranged or misguided fan I hope they do the decent thing and turn themselves and the stone in. There are some tossers out there who take the "myth" and lyrics far too seriously and need professional psychiatric help.

What a shocking and revolting news. Truly hope that the culprits get caught and severely sentenced to say the least.

All my supports go to IAN's Family.

And, humbly, I don't think that any DECENT Fan, just like we ALL are here, would have even thought doin' something this disgraceful.

Sordid !

From the Guardian website:

The former Joy Division singer's memorial stone has been stolen from the Macclesfield cemetery where he is buried

Sean Michaels Thursday July 3, 2008 guardian.co.uk

Somewhere in Cheshire is a seriously melancholy thief. The gravestone of Ian Curtis has been stolen from the Macclesfield cemetery where the former Joy Division singer is buried.

The not-quite-graverobber made off with the memorial some time between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Police are appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts to come forward.

Curtis committed suicide in May 1980, hanging himself in his kitchen just before Joy Division were due to tour the United States. He was 23.

His gravestone is inscribed "Ian Curtis, 18-5-80", with the words "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

"There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft," a police spokesman said. "This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present."

There has been a resurgence of interest in the late singer after last year's Curtis biopic, Control, and a new Joy Division documentary that was released this spring. It remains to be seen whether the gravestone thief sought a movie memento, a poor-taste Cheshire souvenir or just a morbid piece of living-room furniture.

Hopefully, he's sitting in his flat somewhere, staring at the engraved stone, feeling an abject gloom over what he's done.

I'm saddened that the human race has come to this. There are certain things in life you just don't do. Something is deeply wrong with the scum who did this. Let's just hope their friends and family have more of a conscience and force them to put it back and shame them in public. Unbelievable.

RIP Ian. Still.

I took a tour of a local historic cemetery (as far as anything in Rochester, NY can be historic), and when we passed the grave of some Civil War general (or was he a colonel?) the tour guide mentioned that his grave had recently been robbed. The thieves were no doubt looking for some artifact of value, and left disappointed. If someone like that, whom almost no one has ever heard of, has his grave desecrated, what hope does Ian have?

I'm speechless :nonono:

An utterly despicable crime. I hope the bastard who took it rots in hell for what he has done. There are no words strong enough to convey how much revulsion I feel for this subhuman right now. If he has any sense of decency he should return it to his rightful place as soon as possible.

My thoughts are with Ian's family, Debbie and Natalie as well as Bernard, Hooky and Steve.

RIP Ian Curtis 18.5.80 "Touching from a distance...further all the time"

You can see it on the pic, that I have posted. The middle stone looks newer than the left and the right one. The right one is from May 10th 1980.

It may well have been cleaned up

I've seen a pic of it since the theft - it's not just the front part that's gone - the whole square where the plants stand is missing too!

They best not show their face around here. All that time, all those fans who've gone to see it and whatnot, even that fella who casiotoned next to it, all that and nothing sad like this.

My ex burds dad was killed by the IRA in '91. They planted a bomb under his car when he was visiting her granny in a town on the Antrim coast. The family put up a small remembrence stone at the spot where his car was parked (in a car park behind Woolworths). They gave up looking after the stone after the umpteenth occurrence of vandalism to it (sectarian slogans daubed on it, broken in two, dog shit smeared on it etc etc). Sometimes you've really got to despair of the human race.

The 'funny' thing is that i just found today that a reporter from Dutch newspaper 'de volkskrant' just wrote a blog about him visting the gravneston of Curtis a few hours before it must have been stolen.

Read it here (in Dutch): http://www.volkskrantblog.nl/bericht/209148

Short translation: He was in Manchester to see the gigs of My Bloody Valentine last week and decided, in order to kill time, to go to Macclesfield (he's a great fan of JD) to see Curtis's house at Barton Street and to visit the grave of Curtis. He's impressed by Macclesfield (to him it still looks and feels as in the late '70's) and by the fact that in his eyes it still feels as if Curtis is still around there. At first he can't find the gravestone but when he finds it he's blown away with emotions.

Later he talks about strange it was for him to read and heard about the stone missing, needless to say he's shocked to read about the stone missing.

Strange world sometime don't u think?

The train stopped in Macclesfield on the way to Manchester last weekeend. I nearly got off to go and take a look at the gravestone but decided i'd do it another time.

Strange and sad that someone has stolen it, it is probably the usual issue of the longer an suicide-icon is dead, the more mystical they seem to become.

I'm sorry, but real fans don't desecrate graves. :nonono:

At the very least, they can make a new one to put in its place, right?

I like to pop in every now and then, though I must say I feel a bit like "the creepy old guy hanging out with the kids" (AKA Mr. Belding). I've done a little of this thing they call "growing up," so I'm not as starved for attention as I once was :)
