I know it's a boot...

I'm having trouble getting my hands on a copy of this. Can anyone point me toward a downloadable version? Also, I'd be willing to host a zip file on my server.

The only real criticisms of it I can find is that The Happy One sounds like it's been put through an MP3 encoder more than once resulting in that "watery" sort of high end treble and I've personally done better quality Vicious Circle tape-to-wave transfers.

well it's not really known what the source was for this one, could be the Substance video or the bits on that French CD cleverly edited together.

i have the french promo cd with 'the happy one', we could either try taking all the parts (i can upload them) for you..

and also, i'll try to check it out myself.

'Bootleg' is maybe doing it a dis-service. If I've remembered the story correctly, the fan (who maybe did / does post here?) that put this collection together paid to have a professional recording engineer master / transfer the tracks from the best available sources he could put his hands on.

As has already been said, the level of attention to detail in compiling this CD is something Warner could learn from.

It's always been a mystery to me as well. I'm inclined to believe that it probably wasn't edited together from the Palatine Lane promo, because the EFR version clocks in about 30 seconds longer and contains parts of the track that aren't on the promo.

Maybe it was put together from the Substance video (or maybe the Japanese laser disc to get a digital source), and if it was then whoever did it has done a fantastic job as I really can't hear any joins...

I found this version on Audiogalaxy several years ago where it was described as 'New Order - The Happy One (High Quality Fixed).mp3'. I tried contacting the user to see if I could get any more information, but they never replied and Audiogalaxy went under the following week.

7 of those tracks are already on CD, so whats the big deal...

the other vinyl tracks aren't that hard to find..i've remastered them myself way before this came out..

the only one that's another mystery is the :

World (Price Of Love) (Tony Garcia Radio Mix) (3:28)

what should Warner learn from this? take a bunch of random tracks/edits and throw them together??

i think they already know how to do it..

this is a travesty to be called excerpts from 'recycle', the real thing will be much more comprehensive..

I emailed the guy who put this compilation together about three years ago. I was thinking about remastering my KLF rarities for the KLF mailing list and I wanted some tips. I still have the email and here's what he wrote:

"I am so glad to hear you like the disc. It was fun to work on and as you can imagine, it was very difficult to choose what tracks to put on it. I personally own very few bootlegsbecause they're usually so poorly done in terms of sound quality and artwork. I always thought that if someone was going to go through the trouble of making a bootleg, at least make it a worthwhile purchase for the fans! We put themajority of the money into the restoration of the music and a minimal amount on packaging as you can tell. The inserts were professionally printed but we saved money by not having more elaborate artwork.

I'd love to do more of these in the future but I don't know if there's enough tracks to warrant another CD. They really took care of a lot of loose ends with the Singles set. I think I was the first to post about the reversed channels on NOOL. I was comparing Ceremony and Temptation with the EfR tracks and noticed the difference. There's a few screwups on there but overall I was pretty happy with the set. I just wish I waited out for the Japanese version or the US with the bonus tracks.

As for transferring tips... we used a company that does a lot of this type of work for record labels. They work with all kinds of source material, from tape, to old 78s to LPs. They also do a lot of work for government and law enforcement agencies where they clean up recordings so conversations can be heard more clearly and other audio cues can be picked up. It's pretty amazing what they do but they do charge a lot.

I have done some transfer work for personal compilations, like a David Bowie remix CD but my abilities aren't nearly as impressive as theirs! I like Wavelab for recording tracks. It's got some pretty decent hiss and click removal tools that'll do the job on simple stuff. If you've got a really crackly record, it's very hard to remove the pops without affecting the sound quality and it's almost better just to leave it as is.

Some other things I can suggest:

buy or borrow a record cleaning machine to clean your records before transfer - a clean transfer makes life a lot easier when it's time to do the restoration work

of course, use the best turntable you can get your hands on and clean the stylus after every record

get a good sound card - I like the M-Audio line. They're pretty cheap these days and they sound great. I would go with a PCI card over a USB because some people have problems with the USB ones. In the old days, I used a DAT deck as an A/D converter and ran the output to a digital input on my PC which gave excellent results. Of course, back then the sound card was $500 and it was an ISA card! You can buy DAT decks for pretty cheap on ebay these days and cards with digital inputs are really cheap as well. The nice thing about that method is that the signal is already digital by the time it reaches the PC so it's less susceptible to noise."

Yes, it's a CDR. It looks professional, but I can't say definitively if it was manufactured. I'm curious to know how many copies exist. Got mine on eBay as well.

Um... ok, there's no disc "Excerpts from Recycle" on that site, it just basically contains all 1981-1990 New Order singles with all issued mixes and b-sides. So you go by each single... If that's what you were wondering....

More info HERE All the tracks are easy to obtain now, most of them are on that link I sent. If you are after the actual cd , then just keep trying ebay. :)
