This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

If you've been following the threads in my remasters post, then you may have read I'm going to do a proper job on Recycle as well.

Each of the original Factory singles will have it's own CD, collecting every official 7" mix, 12" mix, and B-side. All promo remixes/edits will be included as well, and possibly even a live version here and there.

Things like the 1990 Minimal Records remixes of Confusion will be included. The 808 State acid house mixes may or may not.

Each CD will have a slipcase that faithfully replicates/restores the original artwork:

Once that's finished - Ceremony through World In Effin' Motion - then I'll consider doing the post 1990 singles, but I am NOT a fan of 90's remixes, plus, in most cases there's too many to fit on one CD (hello, Blue Monday 95).

Again, exciting news. Gretton would be proud.

just keeps getting better doesn't it?

in my version, i've got everything included everything up until 2008 ... so it will include the later mixes also...

the artwork you posted is beautiful..

however, my questions:

  1. which cover for ceremony ? (green/white?)

  2. which color for procession? (9 diff ones)

  3. temptation (diff artwork 12" and 7")

  4. perfect kiss (silver cover, or pics on 7")

  5. sub-culture (no cover artwork)

  6. true faith (2 diff covers)

  7. round and round (diff covers)

  8. world in motion (2 different covers)

looking at the colour codes on confusion again, what's the 4th character? the first three are FAC, but blue & purple on the same character?

I'll stick to the standard 12" sleeve (read: True Faith blue, not multiple falling leaves), except for Procession. For that one I'll probably just arbitrarily pick a color. Ceremony will be the reissue cream/blue sleeve because I like it better.

Doing the diecut for Blue Monday will be a bitch.

Hrmm, there's some weird formatting thing going on. Anyway, the question about the color codes on the sleeve - the 4th character is 93 - FAC93, the Factory catalogue number.

holy cow !!!

that is unbelievable !!!

i went to office supply stores looking for printable sleeves, but they all came in flimsy paper versions..

i was never able to find proper ones.. do you have an online source, or store? or are just getting some custom material from an arts store, and just custom cutting it?

for the regular sleeves (not blue monday)..

oh, and by the way, i would definitely be willing to pay for the sleeves, cover, artwork etc..

my version of recycle was going to come with a booklet that had information from the new order discography about every release...

keep up the excellent work !

If the original titles/tracks are already printed on the sleeve, like [orange][orange]Run2[/orange][/orange], I presume there won't be any bonus tracks on these cd-maxis? Luckily not often Peter Saville had put the titles on the sleeves... Or will you be using the original fonts?

Relax, these aren't finished. I'm merely showing you the progress. It's standard procedure for printing to bleed over into the areas you don't see, and the original Saville fonts will be used to list bonus tracks. In the case of Run 2 there are no bonus tracks to add, since the 12", the promo 7", and the video all contain the exact same mix of the song. The only potential addition would be a live version.

Before you attempt Blue Monday I'll tell you it's not going to be fully constructed inner/outer sleeves. That would change the dimensions of the outermost sleeve.

Instead, it'll be a normal-sized outer sleeve with the cutouts, then a bi-folded piece of black (or silver) paper on the inside.

Either that, or it'll be like the PC&L car carry case:

yeah, these are going to be a pain to get the notches, and cutout parts done..

Who's gonna make the actual box ?

Colin Simpson wrote: Who's gonna make the actual box ?

I've wondered about that.

The original logo looked something like this:

with typography that said either "(new) order" or "new (order)" - I forget which.

The sleeves for this set are going to be a zip file bundle with detailed instructions for how to make them yourself - I'm not about to assemble them all. This is a totally DIY project, and with a decent color printer, the right type of paper, and paper-friendly project glue that doesn't cause wrinkling, it won't be difficult to do at all. It'll take an afternoon to finish it.

At first I was thinking about building a custom-sized box from heavy mat board, but in keeping with the recycle theme I'm going to look online and see if I can find something made of plastic. I'd then print the recycle logo and name on clear sticker/transfer material and attach it to the top.

Well, I had initially offered to help a few post back by asking for someone to send me 600dpi scans since I work in the printing business and do a lot of digital restoration for photos and posters, but £50 Note has already shown that he will be doing the art work on his own with very promising results.

Now, if someone sent me scans of the middle vinyl groove artwork, I could even clean those up and have them professionally lazer printed on silver backed CDs to make them look like the original vinyl records. Each disc would cost me less than a dollar to set up and print.

But since you're going to be such a negative Nancy (pun intended), I'll go ahead and join in on your posts and pretend to look like I'm doing something constructive for this project by creating the design for my bonus CD.

So here it is, art work inspired directly by -1's incompetent and largely redundant mock up art posts. Pics are low rez, pulled straight off the internet and are expected to be highly pixelated when printed at 4.75 size.

talk is cheap..

  1. are you really a designer/graphic artist/printer? you're making me wonder..

especially if you expect print copies from low-rez mockups? even the one from 50P?

why don't you actually put up something you'd use, and then we could see if its worth it.

heck, if its good enough, i'd pay, because i don't want to print them myself..

  1. this joke is a little better, because you actually put some thought into it, instead of a stupid one-liner

do you have any ideas on how to mock-up the box? that's what i'm working on now...

maybe you could give it a shot also..

I'm not exactly a graphic designer, but I work as a Lead Project Coordinator for a FedEx Office & Print Center. My job is essentially to overview incoming orders, set things up digitally to be print ready and manage whether production will be done in-store or to outsourced to bigger centers. There is a production center in my city that does lazer printed artwork onto CDs, then silver backed discs can be found from this vendor: http://www.ioproducts.com/index.html

We do photo restoration, but it's pricey. A dollar per minute with most stores forcing a $60 minimum payment. The process involves as scanning the photo into a 600dpi PDF file so it remains at it's original size, then using Photoshop CS3 to touch it up. CS3 makes this easy and it's almost like playing with a coloring book. This is why I originally asked for specific sized scans before £50 Note revealed that he would be reworking the artwork himself.

You told me to add something constructive, yet the past few posts you've made have been a bunch of Photoshopped album images pulled from the internet. £50 Note is already doing the artwork and doing a very excellent job on his own, so why are you even posting these? Of course I know they are not suitable for printing, that was overall joke of my last post. That and pointing out that you haven't added anything productive either besides clutter us with your artwork, much like how I clutter this forum with my sarcasm.

I know I'm not in charge of this project, nor am I even pretending to be. All I'm pointing out is that I had originally offered to help prior to you acting condescending and telling me to do something productive besides making joke. If my help is not needed, than that's fine since I trust it is in good hands.

In case you haven't noticed, there's been a handful of people joking about State of the Nation, with two dedicated threads in fact. If that bothers you, fine, just think twice before you ask people to do something more productive besides make cheesy jokes because it's just going to come back at you ten fold.

All you've done is pulled a handful of low rez images off the internet to post artwork while waiting for someone to pat you on the back for them. How is that contributing toward this project? It's not one bit. The artwork is being taken care of already. Your posts are as redundant as my jokes, but difference between the two is that people will laugh with me, not at me.

First of all, if you actually think any of us here are planning on a making a State of the Nation bonus CD, you really should stay off message boards and get out more often.

Second, the only way you're going to get exact replicas of the singles (foil layered, embossed, die cut, etc.) would be making them all yourself by hand. My company doesn't even do this kind of work and taking them to a custom printing press would be expensive due to set up fees and having to order a specific quantity. Even then, there are copyright issues on the original artwork and they will deny you service. I asked for scans because I have the resources at my work to get something better done than what a home printer can do and can get away with copyright issue since I work there. At most, I can get these printed on basic digipak with lazer printed silver discs.

Third, trying to make anything without high quality scans or design skills will result in images that are pixalated. Seeing how everything you've posted has been images ripped off from other people's websites, I can take a wild guess that you don't have the scans for these and can't provide us with the proper artwork to be print ready. So much like everyone else on this forum, you will have to wait till £50 Note completes these himself.

Besides stolen pictures off the internet, you don't have any productive resources. There's no rationalizing you can do beyond this point. You're still -1 and I will carry on with my bad jokes.

So, I am so excited by the project I decided to do my own dream tracklisting for a Recycle and Recycle 2. I collect infos here and there, using -1 song list and discographies. Please tell me if I am wrong in some places (forgot something or duplicate things. Sometimes, 7 inch edits are messy things. Please improve this list.

I did tracklisting as mentioned : 7 single, promo mixes, live and upgraded mixes (except for true faith 94, 01, 1963-95 and confusion 02, which are true singles in my eyes). Sometimes, 2 CDs are needed for the same single.

Here is already the first quarter.

Third, trying to make anything without high quality scans or design skills will result in images that are pixalated. Seeing how everything you've posted has been images ripped off from other people's websites, I can take a wild guess that you don't have the scans for these and can't provide us with the proper artwork to be print ready.

(huh, who is 'us?'..you said you have nothing to do with the project..)

but you'd be right, i have every single 12" in multiple formats (us/uk/japan) , just not with me, since i've moved recently..

even if i did have them on me, why would i post 600/1200 dpi scans to this board anyways? it's not like you asked..and i doubt anyone would want them now...

So much like everyone else on this forum, you will have to wait till £50 Note completes these himself.

yeah, and i'll keep asking productive questions to 50p, while you keep making pointless jokes..

By "us" I mean every one of us on this forum who is waiting for £50 Note to finish the audio and digital restoration on his own. When he had first posted the artwork for Confusion, he said he would be working on all the other singles up to World in Motion. And I did originally ask for scans prior to him posting his artwork. This was in the other thread shortly after he gave us the audio samples for Shellshock and Confusion.

I've been trying to point out both of these things to you this entire time, but apparently it keeps going completely over your head without any realization, or you are just being ignorant to try to prove some kind of point.

What about the 4:56 Singles edit? Or the Dimitri mix, from Volume 15 CD/Magazine?

And aren't the Japanese 7" edit and the UK 7" edit the same?

Hmmm... and all the 2002 versions?

i dont think any of the live versions should be included...

they are mostly from the dvd's, and there are a lot of them out now..

also, any mixes made in the 90's and on, probably won't be included, i would think..

ie: everythings gone green mixes - 1996 temptation (cj bolland) - 1995 temptation (secret machines mixes)...recent

confusion - a lot of the minimal mixes came out in 1990, so they might be included? but not the pump panel versions..

i dont know this:

Folks, forget all about the time difference, I got the original DMC LP from 1990, where it says 7 mins, but in fact it's as well 5:35. So it's one and the same version. I proved it.

'such a good thing' should not be on there, it came out in 2002, with the re-release..

also, there's a whole bunch of edits of 'world in motion', and the video version is different too..

Yep, Shellshock is the only NO song that was put on the soundtrack, but as you said yourself Elegia and Thieves Like US Instrumental were also used in the movie itself... someone had to give them these songs, and as I recall you were the one that wrote a few days ago that they 'need' different versions all the time...

By the way, there are no extra lyrics in this version of Shellshock, they were just edited out of for the Substance, 7" and video versions.

Hmmm... I think you have to listen again to both the intros of Thieves Like Us Instrumental (7" b-side and alternative 'soundtrack' edit)... they are not the same!

At this point I consider the 7" b-side an unique version, as the intro is differently mixed and can only be found on this release... I hope £50Note can do a good mastering job on this one...

:shades:

i did go back to listen to the intro's they're the same,

then i played both at the same time, and still couldn't tell the difference

although its looks slightly different at the beginning, they do sound the same, (due to the way i mastered it from vinyl)..

for the rest of the entire song they have the same waveforms..

i can't tell the difference..

do you have another version?

:confused2:

Three options:

  1. you don't have the Shellshock 7";
  2. you've completely missed the extra echoed beats (alternate edit) before the bassline starts;
  3. my three Shellshock 7" copies are very rare as they include a different version compared to the 'alternative edit'...

I would say: option 2...

So, listen again very carefully and count the echoed beats. The first approx. 16/17 seconds are really different. The 7" b-side has only 1 time the echoed beats (after 8 seconds and a bit right before the bassline starts). However the alternative edit has already echoed beats on top of the melody and bassdrum at 4 - 8 - 12 and 16 seconds... the rest of the song is similar to the 7" edit...

Looking at music is like dancing about architecture - it's a really stupid thing to want to do.

i have the uk 7" for "shellshock", that's where i got my version from ..

7": UK 1986 (Factory FAC 143) 4:19 Shellshock (edit) 3:55 Thieves Like Us (instrumental edit)

i know there are promos, and other releases, aus, spanish, etc... maybe those are different?

Because it's only released on vinyl, I haven't got the possibility to transfer it yet, but I'll work on it! How's it going anyway? Do you remember on the DVD 'Censor', back in those days? Again, I'll see what I can do for you. And please count me in on your projects, OK?

Yes, of course, chronovisor, how could I forget the man behind the Soundtrack Chronovisor Edit & 'only-visible-at-night-with-the-lights-out' video. It has been a long time since I've visited this forum... so now I am into New Order again...

once again, i'm just looking at what the cd labels MIGHT LOOK LIKE (THESE ARE NOT FINAL)..

could the ceremony one look like this?

only the area inside the white solid circular band would be printed onto the cd, with the rest being cropped off.

i only had the label from the ital 12inch posted on this board, under the discography..

i am using the nero cd label designer..

Yes...there is a slightly different version of In A Lonely Place named "In A Lonely Place (Original 12' Mix)" by neworderonline.

Some notes from the Ceremony page on the discography section:

In A Lonely Place was indeed re-recorded and 3 versions exists, I know of no re-recorded seven inch version, so there are, in fact, three different versions of this song, and not the two as is widely considered. The main points to listen for are at about 3:15, when Hooky's bass comes in (old version: re-triggered thunderclap noise - newer version: no sound FX), and about 20 seconds from the end when the drums and music fall out the mix (old version: no sound FX - newer version: extra thunderclaps)." - Andrew Morrisson

thiagobyo wrote: In A Lonely Place was indeed re-recorded and 3 versions exists

No, that's wrong. It was only recorded once, as listening to the 7" and 12" versions will reveal. It would be impossible with 1981's technology to create two recordings that sound that much alike.

It was mixed slightly differently, with Hannett moving some of the electronic washes/sound effects and bass around, but the band's recorded parts are essentially the same.

Ceremony (green) 12" = original mix Ceremony (copper) 7" = shorter version Ceremony (blue/cream) 12" = different mix

Just a word about the endless edits of songs. I'm not going to fill a CD with, like, 15 different 7" edits from every country. No one wants to listen to that, and as I've said before, I'm not doing the completists job for them. The Recycle discs will include only the commercially available 7" and 12" versions from the UK. Promo edits of note (for example, there is a Thieves Like Us promo 7") and US edits of note (True Faith) will make an appearance, but that's it. Polish Blue Monday edit? Not on Factory. Edits from Japan or the Philippines? Not on Factory. Use them all anyway because 80 minutes can fit on a CD? No. No one is going to listen to that. It's 99% Factory only. A line has to be drawn somewhere.

Edits for singles are inferior. They are a compromised version of the band's vision (see: any edit of The Perfect Kiss), and were usually done by a record label outside the UK for that specific market, not made by the band. How many of you actually fell in love with New Order by hearing a 3-minute version of a song on the radio, and would die unless you had that version in your collection? Great! Use GEMM or some other resource to find a copy of that single and listen to your heart's content. Just because some shlub working for a label that licensed Factory product knows how to use a razor blade and a splicing block to trim minutes or mere seconds out of a song does not mean that mix warrants inclusion on a CD.

So, to bring it back to this topic, the Ceremony CD would include the 7" mix, and the second full-length mix from the cream/blue 12", as that was the "final" mix the band was happy with and appeared on every subsequent pressing of the single and on all later compilations.

This sounds very exciting...down to the artwork and all. I wonder what the labels will think about the fans showin them how it's done!!! .... not mention the band as well...

I think it's a great example of a successful collaborative community of fans.

Credit to 50 pound note to intiate something like this!!!

we should for sure add pretty in pink version of TBTHOG, dimitri mix of confusion amd 808 state versions. its not duplicate edits but good reworkings, like 96 remix of WIM or touched by the hand of bias

what did you think of the remixes update on 2 cds ?

Still not a very consistent tracklisting...

I would start with using the releases from one country (f.i. UK) and build up every tracklisting like this: 7" release 12" release 12" Remix release cd-maxi release cd-maxi Remix release

So, no additional remixes from soundtracks or promo-only versions...

Or...

Take all versions you can find and put them all together! Including all non-album tracks that were recorded/released at the same time, like Video 586 on the Temptation disc, Theme on the Murder disc... I know that nobody wants to listen to various radio edits or 12" variations in a row, but these releases will be in a way a kind of back-up discs. (Personally I hardly ever listen to all tracks that are on a full length cd-maxi in one time, do you?)

What I definitely wouldn't do is combining '80s and '90s (Temptation, Confusion, Blue Monday...) versions on 1 cd-maxi. My suggestion, make separate cd-maxis.

In the end everybody will make his own cd's and tracklisting and that's probably the best, so you can do it the way you feel comfortable with... so no need to complain or dislike someone else's ideas anymore...

i'm not 50p, but he has said many times, there won't be any of the 90's mixes on there..

so we'll have to wait and see, but i doubt it.

it's basically the uk 7", and the uk 12", unless there was secondary release, like a second 12", or the uk cd, and second one..

yes, there are few extras thrown in.. that's a judgement call for 50p..

but this would be a minimal listing..

any less, and you wouldn't even be copying what was released in the UK..

I would consider World in Motion... (Subbuteo Dub) 4:09 from the 12" Remix a different mix compared to the full length 5:09 as it contains unique elements...

i'll admit, i does sound different now.. i used headphones, that made it easier...

hey, my version would have all the edits.. i'll wait until this is finished though, and see what else is missing first..

i'm not 'involved' in this project, i'm just speculating... so we'll have to wait for the final listing from 50p..

You found out already that the 7" intro is unique?

i'll admit, i does sound different now.. i used headphones, that made it easier...

hey, my version would have all the edits.. i'll wait until this is finished though, and see what else is missing first..

i'm not 'involved' in this project, i'm just speculating... so we'll have to wait for the final listing from 50p..

Aren't we all? (Waiting for the final listing)

Maybe, but I think, there's more difference between them (because of the missing extra drum beats), than between the official 'In A Lonely Place' versions, me thinks... :baby:

No, that's wrong. It was only recorded once, as listening to the 7" and 12" versions will reveal. It would be impossible with 1981's technology to create two recordings that sound that much alike.

It was mixed slightly differently, with Hannett moving some of the electronic washes/sound effects and bass around, but the band's recorded parts are essentially the same.

Ceremony (green) 12" = original mix Ceremony (copper) 7" = shorter version Ceremony (blue/cream) 12" = different mix

...snip...

of course factory being factory the cream/ blue sleeve on the outside does not guarantee the different mix on the inside, both versions were sold with the cream/ blue sleeve

only way to check for sure (without listening to it) is to look at the matrix numbers

It is essentially the same mix but the Retro version is definitely tarted up towards the end with an extra keyboard string bit as Barney begins "Oh you've got green eyes...". There are also additional snare hits between the verses on the Retro mix.

I recently acquired the 4 CD "Collected" box set.

I'm entirely amused by how this thread has gone from a comprehensive singles box covering the Factory years to trying to cram the complete effin discography - minus the actual studio LPs - onto discs.

35 versions of Blue Monday? Really?

53 individual CDs? Do you have any idea how expensive that would be? And how completely impractical? That's a leap from plausible to just plain silly.

It's great that you guys are so into the collecting aspect and all, but don't expect a finished product that looks or sounds anything like what you're proposing. I'm only using the UK/Factory A and B sides with an occasional promo edit - that's it.

to some people thats what recycle SHOULD be, comprehensive..

to others, its enough to have the basics..

i think i posted a minimal version that covers that..

to each their own..

I was thinking of a digital release like U2 and Depeche Mode did on iTunes...

... and that's only covering 10 years, instead of almost 30 years now... :thumb:

Still looking forward to your project...

The Recycle discs will include only the commercially available 7" and 12" versions from the UK. Promo edits of note (for example, there is a Thieves Like Us promo 7") and US edits of note (True Faith) will make an appearance, but that's it. A line has to be drawn somewhere.

I totally agree with you

actually cd's are very cheap...

the cost? not much at all.. considering it will be released for FREE, all you have to do is just buy a spindle of 50 or so for US$20 or less.... thats not bad, for being able to get every single remix/edit/etc ever released..

or putting them all on DVD's is even cheaper, i figured it would take 5-7 single layer ones, or 3-5 dual layer ones...just put all the tracks on there, and people will be able to make their own versions..

it's not impractical at all, that's why it's already being planned..

obviously new orders management thought 'recycle' was way too impractical, and yet here we are working on it, and you're creating your own version of it, despite that..

I think people should read the posts better, and not make their own conclusions...

For instance, when I posted a list of non-album tracks/versions/remixes, I never mentioned I want to make a box-set or whatsoever; it was just a list of titles! Or is there an international law against that as well? If people would've read better, there wouldn't be this whole show regarding [black]-1[/black]'s ideas, artwork either... Why not let us "dream" about the ultimate tracklistings, box-sets?!

i agree with Tim, one thing is to talk about it and other thing is to go on and put samples of copyrighted material. DON'T DO IT. no matter how right you think you are about this whole "project". needless to say it's not legal, like it or not Warner is the owner of the back catalog and they can edit whatever they want, even if we don't agree. nobody here is trying to stop you from doing what you want inside your own home. but other thing is to make a public statement about editing a parallel release, defying the record label and their legal rights, and by doing that jeopardizing neworderonline as a whole. i remember we said "be careful". well i guess it's time to say "stop this" and continue any further conversation by private emails. thanks

Recordlabels, like Warner, are making a big deal out of samples/songs floating around. Tracks, that most of the time will never be re-released. As long as these songs aren't available (anymore), in my opinion nobody gets harmed. Regarding the deluxe editions, all the post, tracklistings et cetera have been posted because Warner is giving us again the same tracks, this time in a different order, different sound quality and a different package... but same errors, same requested songs missing... Warner should not have the intention to close this site or any New Order fansite, but instead read, listen and re-act! If they are so keen on having all the rights, they should do something usefull with it: release them in one way or another (CD, digital download...), so they can stop putting a lot of time in searching fan-sites for "illegal activities" and make money, so they can pay New Order to reform!

And again, why not let us "dream" about the ultimate tracklistings... or can Warner make me stop dreaming too?

Let's hope this hasn't been my last post here, but for now it is... :ignore:
