So, if there really was a boxset called 'Recyle'....what would you pay? [it would be released on CD/DVD/ and digitally]

Obviously , i think most of you would probably vote for the cheapest price.

But here's the catch. They would be different versions.

The less you pay, the less you get.

The lowest gets you only the first 20 singles up to 1990, or a 'basic set' of just 7" and 12" releases with a box, and generic covers

The second lowest gets you the first 20 singles up to 1990, of the 'basic set' with a booklet, extra artwork, and individual covers

The second highest gets you ALL the singles on 30 releases up to 2008 with a booklet, artwork, and individual covers

the topmost deluxe edition gets you all the singles up to 2008, with extra tracks/edits/promo cuts, special covers, booklet, artwork.

====================================================

All the tracks would be remastered from the original tapes (if they exist)..

All the covers would be printed on high quality stock to emulate the original covers (including embossing, cut outs, etc).

All the tracklistings and times would be correct.

All the details would be fact checked, and verified.

All the final material would be printed on high quality paper/booklets.

This would be the final project to close out 'new orders' career, and would be done right.

Promos would be sent out and checked by experts to ensure quality control.

If it's a fan project, no matter how well intentioned, it should be free except for the cost of postage and discs etc...

The Electronic and Revenge/Monaco DVDs took years to collect and ages to put together. No matter how skint I was I never asked fer a penny, even for postage or blanks.

Sorry, but that's the way I always did things and that's how most of the others do things on here as well.

If this is completely seperate type of poll aimed at the record company ignore me -1.

This is just another excuse for you two to shoot your load over another endless list of remixes and dubs isn't it?

Unless Saville and Co. came up with some incredibly unbelieveable new cool "recycle bin" artwork/box, I would think that a price much over 50"lbs" or $100USD would be pretty absurd... what would you get, action figures of the band? A unique "authentic" Factory number?

Let's hope you get a call from Warners then -1, shall we?

I would pay, and get the Fan version as to appease myself and the warner patrol. Therefore, I already know they'll screw up, but hey nice artwork? The fan one will be more prized, and i'll feel less guilty that barney can't buy a yacht.

Couple of things

Firstly, fucking respect to Shug for his Electronic DVDs - sent completely free and with care and passion.

Secondly, you can stick those prices right up your arse. You can go out and buy the 12" single set, if you have the time to search for them, and have real, actual 12" sleeves designed by Peter Saville and signed off by Tony Wilson in your actual real hands, and wonderful vinyl with cryptic messages from the actual band on the run-off groove, that also sounds fucking great for a great deal less than what you're proposing.

Yes, that kind of goes against your wet dream of every single fucking mix ever in the world on one disc concept, but anything over £30 is really taking the piss.

Just my opinion like

and how much would you pay then?

how much do 'good' complete boxsets go for? (flaws and all)..

ever seen the beatles boxset? the stone roses boxset? simple minds boxsets?

none of them are cheap...

If the box was mastered by Steve Hoffman I would pay £40. Remember the original great sounding 12" vinyl probably only cost around £3 or £4 each when released in the 80s so £40 for CD Single boxset seems fair to me (if mastered correctly).

Content wise I would only want all of the original 12" Singles replicated as digipack CD Singles with the exact same tracks and artwork as their vinyl counterparts. Not too bothered about having the Get Ready / WFTSC era singles included to be honest.

Another option could be having the set in a more economically friendly package, such as what The Cure and Siouxie and the Banshees did with their b-side box sets. You can sprawl the singles across as few discs as possible, thus lowering the production costs and overall cost to the consumer. It's called Recycle, after all. You can probably reduce the set down to about four or five discs by just including the official 7" and 12" tracks, then include a small booklet detailing the artwork, release tracks, chart records, band commentary, etc. Something like this could possibly sell a lot better and even replace Substance as the definite compilation to get even for newcomers.

that's the option i'm going to take for the DVD versions... stick as many tracks, demos, mixes, and edits as possible onto them..

that way, you don't have switch discs everywhere..

and you can either: play the dvd audio through your dvd player

or rip the tracks you want to cd...

you can store 6 hours of audio on a regular DVD in cd quality.. i am using...

audio DVD creator.. http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com/index.htm

NOTE : THIS IS NOT DVD-audio which is a totally different format, and requires a different player..

I don't care anymore.

I will never ever listen to a disc with 20 mixes of 'Confusion' on it.

For a commercial release through the proper London channel, £20 - £30 ought to cover it... depending upon how much stuff on it i didnt have....

On a side note, how many different 'recycle' projects are there currently being talked about on here ? I'm getting confused.....

on here, as in this board?

only 1 of concern - the one from 50p ....

same for the remasters project

nothing else has been announced.

its all just conjecture and speculation.

I'd be inclined to think that anyone advertising the repackaging and redistribution of copyrighted material and talking money needs to be very careful, with Warners putting out a legal product very soon. We know they, and band's management watch this board.

Regardless of whether we think Warners are making errors on the tracklistings etc and failing to provide the products we want, our only choices are to buy them and shut up or make our own. Not to make our own and flog them, and certainly not to advertise it so blatantly on here. Unless you want the site closed down of course.

Tim, since I'm the one that brought the whole subject up I'll step in and defend -1. Granted, his post doesn't make this abundantly clear, but he's just talking speculation so that the band's management and London/Warners can see how the project would go over. He's not talking about charging anyone himself, merely seeing what people would be willing to pay for a tiered project (like Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I-IV) for an official release.

As for my Recycle project, I probably shouldn't have taken the discussion public in the first place. I'm ultimately doing it for myself, but I'm willing to share the finished product with other long-term fans who've faithfully purchsed New Order's releases over the years and own everything anyway. It's just an outlet for the cleanest-possible sounding versions of things that have (to this point) only been available on vinyl.

I'm not out to rip off the band. I don't believe -1 is either.

I'm so sick of coughing up $$ for the same stuff over and over in a slightly different package, I would just wait and download it somewhere.

The reissues every 6 months is getting redundant and expensive. I have kids. They need to eat. I can't buy "Unknown Pleasures" or "The Singles" for the seventh time because Saville put a watermark on the package using it as a coaster for his patron.

50p is completely correct..

any fan project is done purely by fans

  • for fans..

of course we would never want to profit from copyrighted material..

we know better than that....

this is AN EXERCISE in marketing to see what demand/concerns there would be IF a project like this EVER came about..

it is NOT OFFICIAL, was never implied to be, by myself, or anyone on this board..

thats why i said how much would you pay for a COMMERCIAL boxset, not a fan boxset..

this was brought up during the speculation the first time new order tried to do the boxset.. way back in 2003...

it's just an interesting part of what they could do to close our their careers, and the bands history......

feel free to remove this poll or lock it..

no harm was intended, or meant to circumvent the official releases..

I appreciate that you're not wanting to rip the band off, Warners may not though, and I can just see them stepping in with typical overkill to quash this and indeed the whole site. On the thorny old subject of -1, he's been pissing the entire NO world off for years with his obsession with home-made box sets, I hate to think how many attempts he's made at flogging MP3s to people..... (clue, it's a few)

I'm stunned he'd even think about it.

I mean to do this with any band is not only illegal, but it's actually rather wrong. To do it on the closest thing that exists to an official site defies belief. To do it with THIS band with THESE fans, give the amount of free trading amongst us and the band's quite reasonable turning of a blind eye....is just ,,,, I dunno....but it's HIGHLY fucking objectionable.

What goes on in his head? Anyone remember when I suggested flogging a few boots on ebay for cost + about a quid? The general attitude of fan trading was explainged to me, and I felt terribly ashamed and dropped my plan. How anyone can go this far and not feel like a total scumbag is beyond understanding, even for a renowned genius like me ;)

-1, even if you were doing this as a weed, with jpgs for people to print their own covers, it would STILL be bad form as it is going to contain far too much official and comercially available material. Boots are a different thing, there ARE no offically available recordings of most gigs and all of us own licenses to the songs themselves, so it's "no harm, no foul". What you propose, is to divert money from the band to your pocket, and they wont like that any more than I do. Suppose you DID get this made up and selling, suppose I cloned your version and sold it a fiver cheaper? would you like that?

i don't usually defend -1, (and this is a first for me) but the way i read his OP was that he was wondering how much folks would be willing to pay London or Warner or whoever

IF they did a proper Recycle.

everyone needs to chill out. he was speculating.

he isn't firing up a factory in his basement and cranking these out.....

and to worry that someone will read this thread and make an assumption and then shut down this website due to one member's pure speculation and dialogue about a fictitious product is pretty over the top.

i mean, an asteroid could hit earth tonight as well and kill us all. sure.

Again, I'm defending-1 here.

He was just taking a straw poll on what we'd consider paying for an official release, should it ever materialize.

The fact his proposals were way off the mark is neither here nor there, but you'd have to be a vicious litigious shark to read his post as a serious price list for a forthcoming project.

Well, the problem is that a lot of his other posts are causing some of the miscommuncation here. If you look around, there's topics showing mock up artwork, track listings, links to MP3s and now this, a discussion on pricing. For someone quickly browsing through these forums, it's easy to assume the worst is going on here without really reading into it.

Either way, posting direct links to MP3 tracks is never a good idea on music forums, even if we are doing it as fans for free to each other. Things like that could be handled through personal messages. I'm not singling out -1 specifically, but just stating a general opinion.

please point to 1 single post, about me asking for this kind of money..

or indicating that if someone pays me, that i'll give this them....

or that i'm selling this 'project'..

IF ANYONE ON THIS BOARD can do that..

  1. I'll never post another word about this again
  2. I'll never mention another mix or tracklisting again

I would pay big money for an official boxset containing all the songs New Order have ever made with all the versions from New Order themselves, including some of their best gigs.

I am not interested in any remixes from 3rd parties. It's ironic for me to say this, but I don't like dance music so the remixes bores me to death. I am only interested in the real New Order versions like all the versions of Temptation are all excellent IMO. Simply put, I want 100% New Order.

How the fuck was this thread mis-construed as a fan project - unless the subject title has been altered. If not, -1 (or 'less than zero' in my household:evil4: )deserves some apologies.

BTW, I voted for 75 quid but FFS, too many options regarding sleevenotes etc.

It was amended to COMMERCIAL Pete - thus avoiding confusion later in the thread. Sorry if any offence was caused -1 but I'm sure you could see where I was coming from.

I have no qualms with anyone making this themselves, fcuk the record companies, how many times have we been ripped!?!

But if a fan does put it together - and no doubt several of us would contribute, it would have to be free for all fans.

And I'd be first in the queue to help (and receive obviosly)

An official release..... I would gladly trade in Retro and give them a fiver.

There's no fookin' way there could be any justification of charging £150 for any kind of boxset,no matter how fookin' fantastic it is,or if it's by my favourite band. You want people to buy it for fooks' sake, all this would do is make it collectable, therefore making all the money-grabbing no-fans to put it on ebay & try & rip people off. It has to be realistically affordable :nono:

Altho',at £150,you'd be getting ripped-off in the first place

not a problem.. i expected there to be some resistance to this topic...

as its been a heated issue before..

i find it funny how on a 'new order' board..

which is full of complaints about the official products that get released..

when someone one wants to do something better than the actual releases, and get it done right people get all worked up/offended/up in arms...

it's almost like you want sub-par releases, just so you (ie: the people that like to complain) feel like you have a justification to gripe about every little detail..

but if something actually got done, you wouldn't have anything to complain about anymore..

ironic isn't it?

don't worry, now that new order is a 'dead' band, there really isn't much left to do with their music..

that's why this would be a crowning achievement to close out their careers.

and once its done, and done right, a lot of people would disappear, since they would have nothing left to talk about or get...

Because everyone is entitled to their opinion, that's why. We won't all necessarily agree on the subject matter raised here, but to merely delete the thread would smack of dictatorship.

My opinion is that I have no problem at all with people making their own compilations of recorded and released material for their own use. I also think you shouldn't go distributing this material to others though, whether for free or charging money, unless you want the record company breathing down your neck. Yes of course we've all got all or most of the records already, in which case we can all make our own compilations. My bottom line though is if you don't have a particular record or mix, buy the record, they are all available. Yes of course we all know that Warners are masters of screwing the products up and releasing sub-standard products that don't meet our requirements, that is where we have to do our own compilations etc, but as I say, do your own, don't get it off someone else.

i guess what Tim wants to say is "be careful" and at the same time he's trying to defend this site from being closed down in case Warner wants to do something about this project. it's not about the project per se, i'm sure. i've been involved in a former -1 project before (international 2?) and it worked just fine as we distributed it in chains. maybe we should continue talking about this in the Ceremony mailing list so it can be a little more private? it would be a good excuse to bring it back to life too. just an idea ;)
