Amascam.com or Amazon for the light hearted, has informed me of my Remastered Technique arriving the 3rd. That day, I will give an honest write up of my favorite New order remaster.

So It's arrived, the bonus disc has already been elaborated on masny times, therefore this about the ALBUM. Comparing the two versions, the Original and this Remaster, I have concluded to enjoy the Remaster more. The sound is warmer, certain songs, I hear a little more of Hooky's bass. Mr Disco and Vanishing point are magnificent sounding, crisp and clear, unlike the Vanishing point on the best of, which is a bit "loud". All in all, I enjoy the new sound, and notes about Bez crashing cars.

Mr. Preda,

How extensive are the liner notes? They are going to be a big factor as to whether I buy these or not....are the interviews solid and in depth?

The Liner notes, describe alot about the Ibiza days. Typical humor from Steve. Things like the studio being chosen, but the Ibiza one won due, to having a swimming pool. The interviews are on par with the ones in "Retro". Even Gillian says a few things.

glad you enjoyed it..

there is a slight amplitude increase, which might account for being able to hear some of the instruments better..

the frequency response for most of the tracks is about the same as the original release though..

I'm going into town to buy them all now.

Will Get Ready be remastered one day?

I don't think I've got a copy of Get Ready.

where's the graph? I demand graphs if we are to take you seriously...

If it's simply amplitude related, it's no different than turning up the volume. Amplitude(volume) can effect hearing perception but can't change the recorded material. If we're talking dynamics, then we're into something different than just a change in amplitude.

If anyone is so inclined, a simple null test can reveal the difference a remastered song. Using a multitrack editor, take a newly remastered song and an original and line them up so that they play in perfect time. Match volume levels between the two as accurately as possible. Now, invert the phase on the original track and listen to the difference. What do you hear? Two identical sounds with one of them being out of phase will cancel each other out. If there is any signal left over, you're hearing a difference in eq and dynamics.

How about a pie chart?

Surely it is technically slightly different from turning up the volume, because you are making more use of the dynamic range available with the cd format? You have better resolution in the volume range. After all, at the extreme, if the original cd audio was squished into a very small range, turning up the volume would just reveal how awful it sounded. (Though I suppose it would depend on whether the increased amplitude was a result of genuine remastering or just digitally processing the original cd).

While I'm here being sad and geeky, did all the previous NO releases (Factory, Qwest, Centredate, etc) on cd have identical sound quality, i.e. did they just vary in packaging and are the 'remasters' really the first remastering?

You can simply "fill up more bits" by transferring the old analog 2 tracks with modern conversions you're still stuck with what was on the source. If anything the modern sound is a decrease in dynamics for more perceived loudness at the mastering stage. There are so many variables that can have an impact on how something sounds but it all comes down to the source and the additional replication and regenreation in the signal chain beyond that. I will say that analog/digital conversion can play a larger factor than most might believe and can impact the sound of the final master and could play a large role in how these sound.

Cheers!
