what the hell was moby thinking when he did this JD song?
i just downloaded it and it freaking sucks. it sounds like death metal crap done 15 years ago...freaking ruined the song!

Snucker, me old mucker, I think you're right.
His vocals are appalling. He is not the best vocalist in the world although I ve liked his stuff since GO minus that thrash metal stage but he should leave that alone.
He did NDF on Later on Jools Holland to a string quartet which was a much smoother affair and that rendition wasn't bead at all.
But your version is complete shit.

Which version do you mean snucker, the studio version or the live Moby / New Order one from the 24hr PP Soundtrack?
I quite like the studio one, but the live version makes me hit the skip button every time.
if you´re talking about the "Heat" movie version didn´t like it. but if you´re talking about the area one version I didn´t like moby´s voice (never did really) but the instrumental background it´s superb. it´s power can´t be denied.
listening stephen actually PLAY his drums again it´s great.
the combination of both guitars with hooky´s killer basslines makes the song sound like an hymn again.
but moby´s voice is weak, that´s true, and can´t be ignored.

Granted, his singing isn't too great on this at all (espescially the live version) but I've heard far worse covers than this;)
Wouldn't it be great if we were treated to the NEW ORDER version in Mancland the morra?;)

Missed the South Bank thing, but did catch Moby in the US last summer. Alright first time you see him, but when you hear the same 'caring' remonstrations the second time around it starts to grate somewhat. And starts to sound Very Very False.
I can't quite get me head 'round Americans who try to be 'Leftfield'. They try faaar too hard, and end up as simpering and staid as the Right (see also: Ben & Jerry's, Bill Gates, etc). I believe Alexei Sayle stuck American Socialists (can't remember the exact umbrella term he used) into Room 101 last time he was on said show..
I'll tell you what really pisses me off about Moby and his version of "New Dawn Fades": the way he changed the original lyrics at the begining of the song. 
The instrumental is fine but he should respect Ian Curtis' lyrics.
Moby used to be interesting...
and I'll never forget the first time I saw him, opening for the Shamen, the little bastard made me tired from all his bouncing around the stage...
but I have grown tired of his act...

i don't know which version i got, but it sucks. i'll try to check out the 24ppl version, but it can't be that big of a difference. if it stinks once, why would it be any better on a different cd?
again, this version sucks...he doesn't have the voice to sing this song, it sounds so amateurish. like i could sing like this in my bedroom. it sucks so much, who can pay attention to ian's wonderful lyrics?

Because the 24HrPP version was recorded with P.Hook, B.Sumner, S.Morris and G.Gilbert on backing instrumentation.

Hum, I would rank Porcelain in my top 20 songs of all time, I just *love* that song. I like We're all made of stars but it's not to the same level.
Just funny when I think the way I figured that song was Moby was wondering what was that great sound in the Bailey's commercial and tought "Hum, that would be quite a good song"... then a few months later I saw the trailer for The Beach and it was used, this is where I went to see what songs were on the soundtrack and found out it was Moby...
I've been a Moby fan for years, so I can understand easily why some people might get tired of his act. You can get bored after a while, but I still like the guy.
Anyway, I have a little story about Moby and New Dawn Fades.
The only time I saw Moby live was a loooooong time before "Play" came out -- it was in 1995, right after he released his "Move" E.P. and his only real success until then was the single "Go.".
So anyway, there we were at the Club Soda (500 - 1000 places at max! Small club) and in the middle of the show, Moby, outspoken as always, asked the crowd: "I need someone who knows how to play keyboard. Is there anyone here who can play keyboard ????, and NOBODY responded. He asked THREE times and insisted. I really wanted to raise my hand, but I just can't play, so I didn't.
Finally, someone volunteered and Moby showed him what to play -- it was a VERY SIMPLE four key structure -- it was only a bass part, and you wouldn't have to know how to play keyboards to play that part!
So anyway, they were settled and then Moby announced: "This is a Joy Division song and it's called New Dawn Fades".
So there you have it. I could have played bass on keyboards on NEW DAWN FADES with Moby. I was so pissed off when I realized that, since NDF is by all-time favorite JD song.

Not bothered about Moby's music either way - but yes, he might seem a bit boring, but from the interviews I've seen/read, he seems genuine, honest and not full of crap like most 'artistes' nowadays.
As for his version of NDF - In my book, ANYONE who raises the profile of JD/NO and encourages a new generation to start searching out their music deserves congratulations. Even Paul Young, Grace Jones, Swans, Kylie, etc.
At least Moby didn't just try to sound exactly like JD - he (in my opinion) both added to and detracted from the original at the same time.
kudos for him...but still, even if the cover is a departure from the original...it still has to be quality work! there's such a thing as doing the song justice and not ruining it. as for moby's original music, he's an ok dude, i like his cover of "that's when i reach for my revolver"...it was nice seeing moby do a complete rock song with no electronic stuff.
I think a worldwide law should be passed that nobody exept New Order can do Joy Division songs. I know that some people think covering JD raises their profile and a wider audience can hear their music but if my first taste of Joy Division was Moby murdering NDF I'd have thought no thanks. Joy Division's music has lasted twenty odd years perfectly well on it's own merits. New Order playing these tracks live with Barney or Hooky on vocals yes please. Anyone else just keep off and leave it to the experts.

well....i like the Nine Inch Nails cover-version of "Dead Souls".
nah, i think covers are good. it brings a song in a different light. um, a good cover? i didn't mind 54-40's version of heart and soul...
dead souls by NIN was not that bad...i first heard it a few years ago and i didn't know it was JD song. but it sounds very similar to the JD version, but i still hate trent reznor's singing!
No matter how talented he is, Moby will always appear as a charlatan, and artistic magpie, abusing his license, to me. Please, no Tim Burgess jokes, thank you.
