Been a bit of a bicker over this, Summarising; some think it shouldn't be allowed 'cause it's giving good music to Tories, Komakino flexi wasn't similar because the outlets were cooler, the factory ethic should be observed and the re-releases should be a financial disaster. I think it's ace and will be buying all five. 
I buy the Times most Sundays, simply because it's better written than the others. I never read the news section though, just the features, reviews and the good motoring section. AA Gill is my hero and I sneakily "Winners Dinners", usually on the toilet.
Don't worry about your money going to the Times - you won't be helping him much. Newspapers don't turn much of a profit on days when they put free cds or films on the cover. It's a loss leader, and not much of one as there they generate little or no sustained increase in sales, just a big blip on the day. In fact, the editors hate doing them, but feel pressured to do it in order to keep up with the others. Not everyone's a looser though - they are nice earners for the record companies, and the musicians get their product into households who don't buy music, or that kind of music. How many copies of that god-awful Prince album would have been sold, for example. None at all, that's how many.
The cds aren't surplus stock either; they are specially produced for the publication. Surplus cds are sold in bulk for pennies a time, then end up in rummage bins in supermarkets.

as it's an exclusive release format will be getting a copy later i spose just wish they'd picked albums i didn't have already for the non factory ones!
The CD isn't in the paper, it as to be picked up from WH Smiths. Alternatively you can phone for all 5, cost £5.99. Will post the phone number later.
Hopefully someone will put it through a spectrum analyser and post a few graphs, to see if is worth 80p.

I am a geek I know but I already ran it through Exact Audio Copy ! Basically this free disc is the same as my original Factory CD from 1985 - it is NOT the recent Remaster. I would hazzard a guess that PCL will not be the remaster either.
I have sussed out why they are doing this promotion as well. On the back of the Cd it says "buy all the JD Cds at Rhino.com" - The Times also give you 10% off so clearly the hope is people will buy the entire back catalogue up (that is the people who have not been following the remaster threads on here!).

Well, seeing as I won't be touching the newly-released "remastered" "Collectors Editions Rip Offs" with a bargepole I suppose this means at least I might be able to procure PC&L (and Closer) for less than a quid and have both come in nice card "mini album" sleeves just like the way they should have done! 
Cheers Dave, unless anyone is passing a WH Smiths in the morning I wouldn't hold out much hope for getting a copy. Our local WHS ran out of Closer early in the day. They gave me a copy of the Love Cd which is the only one I don't already have so may not bother with the rest, after all it is only packaging isn't it?

Besides, Ian Curtis was a Tory, as is Yvette Livesey. That's good enough for me.
Either that, or vote Labour - the party that has betrayed the working man more than any other in the political history of Britain. Fook that.

BTW, I scaved a token off a work colleague today and headed down to WHSmith for my free copy, and now the proud owner of a 'limired edition' Joy Division classic. 
And they call America the "land of opportunity" Well, we don't get those kinds of opportunities!!

got mine at lunch time yesterday & asked if they had any of the love one left so got that as well

A quick test in Exact Audio Copy of the free PCL disc reveals it to be identical to my original Factory Records CD - this is not the remaster. Does anyone know if the Centredate issue from the 90s was identical to the Factory disc ?
I believe the centredates were exactly the same as the originals. i was given all four in my whsmiths today. must be my tenth copy of PCL at least.

I have given the free Times PCL a detailed listen using audiophile equipment for the first time in ages. Obviously this is just the standard Factory/CentreDate master we have here not the Remaster. I don't know whether it's the fact that my audio equipment has improved over the years but this sounds really good. A CD Player feeding a high quality DAC into an all valve(tube) Heaphone Amp and Sennheiser's top of the line HD650 heaphones reveals this to be a very satisfactory master indeed.
Now comparing the free disc with a lossless (ahem) 'review' copy of the remaster - yes the remaster is a bit louder but where have all the dynamics gone?? I don't enjoy the remaster anywhere near as much as the copy I got from an 80p daily newspaper. Really glad I have not shelled out for any of these remasters now (the line about how the bonus discs sucked but the first discs were OK can now be dismissed - at least for people with decent equipment). However, I guess the remasters would be OK on a car stereo.
