the documentary 'joy division' is better than both 'control' and '24 hour party people.'

discuss at your extreme leisure.

I like the Grant Gee documentary about Joy Division a lot, even the extra interviews are nice to have. Together with the Glasgow DVD of New Order, it's a good (DVD-)New Order year, ... but it's (still) not a fantastic New Order year ... everyone knows why ...

It's a good companion piece to Control.

another pointless discussion point... but if you showed the Joy Division documentary to somebody who knew nothing about Joy Division, would they understand it well?

nope. because the band's origins and history are presented at lightning speed through use of rushed, barely decipherable anecdote snippets (esp. for those of us who might have dialect-related difficulties). So if you don't know already who they are / and how they came together, you're out of luck. I thought this was a major flaw, actually.

All these films run together like a menagerie. You get the same view of the band, we got in New Order Story/Item. An unpersonalized extended interview, with an occasional Tony Wilson quip. Though Control is lacking in some departments, it runs hand and hand with "Joy Division". In essence these films, must be enjoyed equally, for what they lack/supply.

I liked them all but I preferred the JD documentary to hear first hand from the people who actually lived it and knew Ian. I found the bits of historical info interesting as well.
