Overview of ALL the New Order comps

Hey everyone, I'm new to this board, but I've been following it for weeks now to track all the problems with the Factory remasters. Despite the shoddy job, these reissues HAVE gotten me back into NO in a big way... to the point that I spent (way too much) time compiling the 20 essential singles, in their various compilation forms and edits, on my blog:

I'm sure there's a few errors here and there, but I think it's a decent overview in case someone wants to know which compilation offers which version. And it's definitely a confusing task... I felt like my head was gonna explode by the end of it! Any comments/criticisms, please post 'em here or on the blog. Thanks!

GREAT job! I'm in the same boat as you having been a fan from way back, but getting away from NO for a while.

I'm SO disappointed on the new being so shoddy from most accounts..I was hoping it would be a way to collect everything in one place. I've dug out my old Qwest "Substance" discs and have been enjoying them.

BTW, I printed you list out for reference.

Thanks for the kind words! Wikipedia and Allmusic were my main reference tools, and of course the CDs themselves (I'd forgotten how ODD the '94 mix of BLT really is on Best Of). Single covers were courtesy of worldinmotion.net.

I'm not sure I got all the info correct in regards to the European issue of Best Of, which I don't personally own... I was basing everything on timings and Internet info. If the liner notes are as crap as the American version, they're no help anyway. The biggest frustration for me was ALWAYS the lack of detailed info with these comps, so that was the main purpose of my blog article.

I'll probably hash through the albums and comps in a week or so, more for the sake of newbies...

Hi, interesting review! I'd like to give some comments if you don't mind.1/ Your readers might be interested in the sound quality of the various comps, which is far from being uniform. Singles, for example, is overly compressed. All CD versions of the original 12" mix of True Faith have clicks ("morning sTun"...). This was corrected in the 94 version (which differs only slightly from the 12" one, so I wouldn't throw it away as you suggest). The 12" version of Perfect Kiss on Low-life (collector) also has clicks and pops... Basically, the bonus material on these collector reissues seems to be poor quality.2/ I don't agree with your comments on the 94 mixes of some songs on Best Of. I consider most of these mixes as the best versions available of these songs. They may not be "genuine", but not less than Temptation 87 and Confusion 87. I just regret that the last words of 1963 were cut off ("I will always free"), which ruins the song, as well as the last instrumental seconds of True Faith.3/ Your readers might like to know that there exists a 7" version of Bizarre Love Triangle (remixed by Shep Pettibone as was the 12") not available on any compilation. It's a pitty they didn't include it on Singles.4/ The Run 2 7" mix is, to my knowledge, the same as the video version which is available on the Collection DVD.5/ The next two singles from Republic were World (Price of Love) and Spooky. I remember that the radio played most of the time the Perfecto edit of World and that the video version of Spooky was the Minimix. As a result, I believe these should be considered as the actual single versions, although they aren't on the Singles compilation.6/ Fine Time (Silk mix) is also available in Retro.

You are aware of the niagara (www.niagara.edu/neworder) discography? It's fairly comprehensive. Though its so comprehensive that the information you have on your site is rather buried on there.

We're quite spoiled with all the New Order compilations. Most bands simply have one or two "best of" compilations with their best 10 songs or so. New Order compilations always have something different or unique to offer.

Expect a new one within the year, featuring some obscure eurodub remixes.
