Just been into my local HMV today & saw the Retro box set in a new package. There are no extra discs or tracks, but the packaging is quite different. It looks a lot smaller, there is no sleeve & it looks like it folds itself out 3 times. The booklet looked a lot thicker too,but could not tell if there was anything extra in it as the box was sealed !!!

Is there anything 'extra' in the booklets ?
Will let you know when they have arrived to me here in sweden...but i don't think so - bought them because i didn't like the first box-size. I ususally buy my discs on ebay or HMV since it's cheaper than buying discs here in sweden???
They're more like hardback books now.
I never really cared for the "wide" box format of the original releases which was prone to easily wear and sometimes tear. Plus they were an awkward shape to store. To Warners' credit these new boxes look reasonably smart, sturdy and would look good on a bookshelf.
I popped into both Zavvi and HMV just off Piccadilly Circus at the weekend and the former had just one copy of Retro with no price tag. I asked an assistant how much and was told £28. Aye right. HMV had neither of them.
Brilliant distribution as always, Warners ![]()
I might just grab both of them off Amazon for 17 quid each.... at some point (no rush).
As for the products themselves... after all these years everyone knows the score really; Heart & Soul is pretty much indispensable if you like your JD whereas Retro is nice for the masterings but ultimately a bit redundant.

There is a name for this new sized packaging which is now contracted from the double standard CD jewel box width dimension to one that is one standard width plus one half-width. It's called the "Compact Book Quad CD" packaging. It's simply shrunken down from the previous longer dimensions. ![]()
My original Echo and the Bunnymen "CRYSTAL DAYS - A DEFINITIVE COLLECTION OF GODLIKE SEMINAL BUNNYMEN A-SIDES, B-SIDES, AND MORE BESIDES LA'!!!" has also undergone exactly the same "shrunken down" treatment as is the aforementioned Cure B-sides compilation box set. Maybe this is standard [re]issue for economy reasons after the initial run of full-length double width packs have been deleted.
Anyway, I too think this new size is actually better and easier to store as it looks more like a squat book rather than an elongated one. The only snag now being that you need to lift the top CD out in order to access the bottom one in each case. Besides, the original sleeve and card digi-pak formats of this box set package shape were far too flimsy - Retro being an example as the trays were always dropping out and the sleeve holding the booklet was prone to creasing and bending - iut was very weak and lacked reinforecement. This new improved size is sturdier and offers greater durability I think.
Anyhow, having said all that, the skeptic within me now wants to speak: I get the distinct feeling that record companies will continue to repackage box sets in new improved or altered formats just so that the sad pathetic collectors and anal retentives amongst us will no doubt go out and buy them over and over again, content in the smug knowledge that each time the Retro and Heart & Soul box sets get a reissue with slightly altered graphics (the principal graphic images are zoomed in this time and orientated in portrait rather than landscape aren't they? Very "arty" eh???), we will fork out for them once again. Well...perhaps I can now go and buy these two new-sized box sets at a bargain price but ditch the previous originals and flog them off on E-Bay as they're so fucking flimsy (but of course, keep the bonus CD5 from "Wretchro" of course!!) ![]()
