Now that were on the subject, What's up with Vicious Circle? It seems to be a Ruined in a Day B-Side, but I've never heard it or seen it discussed, ever on here.

Two versions of Vicious Circle were officially released; a mix by Mike Haas on the Ruined In A Day CD single and the band's own mix on the cassette. It was the only track from the Republic sessions that was not produced by Stephen Hague hence sounds a bit Technique-y and less polished than the rest of the album.
The CD is common as muck to find on Ebay whereas the cassette is probably slightly trickier to hunt down these days. I did my own conversion of the New Order mix from tape to CD some years ago on a Nakamichi tape deck so it's worth doing well if you're assembling a rarities compilation or whatever.
There's not much to say about the track really... it's a 3-4 minute (in either form) housey instrumental. Tuneful enough but ultimately forgettable and there's a Marshall Jefferson "gotta have house music" sample in the intro. Mind you we were lucky to get any non-album tracks from that period considering the state the band's working relationship was in.
Hooky later reused the Vicious Circle bassline - one of his funkier ones - for Monaco's 1997 single Sweet Lips with er, a bit more chart success 
Sugarcane doesn't post here anymore. Shame cos she was dead fit.

... Incidentally I think the cassette version's stronger. But ultimately, as Claude Flowers comments in his buke, there's nothing distinctive about the track.

i have a huge favor! i am a NUTTER for Vicious Circle, but have only ever heard the Haas version....
back in 1994 or so it was an AWESOME tune, and I still love it... yeah, it is just an instrumental, but something about it just makes me smile.
anyway, I would LOVE a copy of the cassette version...

Yep, must say i found the cassette version of RIAD a year after its release and really enjoy the New Order mix - what about their mix of Regret - for quite a while that was my favorite track, its got so much weight and to me captures the time much better and i guess this is how the track would have been minus Hagues input - just wonder how else Republic could have been like too if they had tried Producing themselves - guess at the end of the day we're lucky it saw light of day!
Does anyone have a stream or download of the New Order Mix?
Even if I got hold of the cassette single, I have no access to a cassette player.. it is the 21st century after all.
