Artist of the Century - New Order?

Earlier this year the American Music Awards decided to give Michael Jackson the 'Artist of the Century' award. Obviously this award is bogus as there are many more worthy candidates (including our band) like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Sex Pistols, and lots of others. I know it says "Artist" and not band, but let's not split hairs here...

What do you think of Jacko winning this "award"? Did he really deserve it? Did he accomplish THAT much that warrants him this award?
How would you rate Joy Division/New Order in the running for this award? (Chances would be close to nill of them ever winning this, but I'm curious what my fellow Order fans think.)
If not Joy Division/New Order for the award then which artist/band truly deserves it?

Wacky Jackie has laid some memorable tunes I'd say. He might be as nutty as a fruit cake now but when he wasn't painted white he was great and crossed the generations - everybody liked him (almost). Both him and the king are high candidates, personally I prefer 'El the Pel but Wacky has to be a close second, with The Purple Princess, Stevie Blunderbuss and others bringing up the rear end. Given these two are fairly obvious choices surely the results are based highly on record sales, with Jackie and big El scoring easily the best out of any other individual artist (including Casper the friendly ghost).

New Order, based on record sales, would find it difficult competing with the massive bands like Them 2 and The Beatnicks ... question is, do you really want them up there at no.1 when the alternative would be to have them cult and underground? ... and so much cooler.

Somehow I can't envisage Bernard as no.1 male artist ... unless he was to gain a further 100 pounds and tour Vegas for 5 years covering his own songs.

Artist of the century has to be the Beatles...

They influenced so many other bands, it can't be anyone else.

After that I'd go with U2 over Michael Jackson, simply because they are popular WORLDWIDE since the last 25 years. As for Michael Jackson, his last is a total flop and we didn't hear much from him in America after his "Bad" album.

Is there artists who say they are influenced by Michael Jackson?

As for Elvis, he can be a contender.. but I don't think he was bigger than the Beatles.

Don't put New Order there, they don't belong there, they are not popular enough. I'd put Depeche Mode ahead of them anyway, despite the fact they didn't have much success after 1993. They aren't international enough..

SuFOOKINperb Huntsy - I'm posting with tears in my eyes - another classic, definitely agree NO shouldn't be up fer this for reasons stated by both yersel and Nicos. But Nicos, Nicos, Nicos :nonono: Never put Depish in front of New Order EVER.........unless we're talking double decker busses :evil4:
