Avalanche...

Does anyone know or has read about the meaning of the song Avalanche -- I know Gillian is the vocals, but of the 488 songs New Order has, this is the most haunting and melodic I feel ... and I know New Order. I've never read or heard about why and what inspired them to produce this enchanting song... Anyone?

The only thing I remember about this was Stephen implying in an interview from that period how he had to push through Gillian's reluctance to experiment by using different tunings for different musical parts. I presume that means that Stephen & Gillian at least originated "Avalanche".

I really like the track, not least because the other instrumental music that NO and spin-offs have done has been pretty lame - surprising, given how moody and, erm, atmospheric many of their songs are.

I doubt that there are many identifiable inspirations for their tracks; most seem to arise spontaneously from jamming.

New Order falling apart? Factory going under? Growing old? Sexual issues?

One could only speculate. Maybe Gillian was trying to make a pretty song, cause she wasn't into breakbeat house.

Always associated this song with the end of new order,, like the last song,, ,, its very sad, yet uplifting,, rather like the order.

Elegia,Ecstacy,Don't Do It,Salvation,Best & Marsh,Let's Go,The Happy One,Sedona....yeah,they're all really fookin' lame.....

I read either in Sound on Sound or a similar type of mag that it was basically steve and gillian going through the presets on a new keyboard (I think the Kurzweil k2000, but not sure) It's certainly an atmospheric track, but elegia beats it hands down.

It was haunting in the fact that it was to be the last album track we'd here from them for another eight years.

A nice tune hich would have made a decent b-side, but I never understood its inclusion on Republic. Had they run out of ideas by then?

I should have said "most of"! I'll give you "Elegia", for sure. But "Ecstasy" has words, even if it's "lost for words"! And there's a reason why "The Happy One" never got finished...

Avalanche has words, too. Well, a word, at least.

I've always thought Elegia was the perfect Ian tribute (what could be more fitting than an instrumental?)

And Sedona is pure gold.
