No, friends. Thanks for all your help, but I'm quite familiar with the post-Stooges New Order project and this certainly wasn't that band. My only other thought is that perhaps it was a band doing New Order covers (I can't remember which ones, but they WERE New Order/Joy Division songs!), but if so, they were doing an ENTIRE SET of their material. Though this wouldn't be out of the question, it's rare for a band to do something like that. However, I've seen a few bands do long cover sets. I saw the Afghan Whigs in a club do half-a-dozen or more songs from Pink Floyd's "The Wall", for instance. Indeed, as someone pointed out, New Order tends to come off heavier live, but as I said, what I heard at the time was uncharacteristic for them even at their hardest and loudest. Not heavy metal sounding, just really revved up, aggressive, and distorted.
Of course, it doesn't help that what I heard was on a cassette tape (pre-CD burners!) with no details on it whatsoever. Nor does it help that I'm only bringing this up now, years after the fact! While I may not be the world's biggest New Order fan, these were undoubtedly New Order songs, being performed live, to a considerable crowd. Anyway...no big deal, really. It will perhaps always remain a mystery, but I thought perhaps someone out there would know what I was talking about. Thanks again, though, to those of you who stopped to help!
