Auteur Labels: Factory Records 1984

Various Artists | Auteur Labels: Factory Records 1984 Fifth volume in LTM's compilation series Auteur Labels, here profiling releases on legendary Manchester independent label Factory in 1984. Founded in late 1978, early Factory releases were guided by the five original directors: Wilson, Erasmus, Saville, Hannett and Gretton. By 1984 producer Hannett had departed, and many Factory singles and albums were produced by all four members of New Order under the generic name Be Music. These reflected the influence of New York dance and electro music, though the label's Hacienda night club was not yet a conspicious success. Meanwhile the artier side of Factory remained evident in records by The Durutti Column and Thick Pigeon, and pop/rock in The Wake, Stockholm Monsters and New Order themselves. The 72 minute remastered CD features several rare edits and tracks, detailed liner notes by James Nice and archive images. The compilation series Auteur Labels profiles independent record labels with a unique and enduring sound, vision and often a design sensibility, often guided by one or two directors and concerned more with art than commerce. Stanton Miranda and Carter Burwell. Steve and Gillian produced them.

That is a great track listing, it really gives you a great overview of Factory Records. I'd buy for the Simon Topping & Shark Vegas tracks alone. I even dug out my copy of FACT US 17 to listen to Pretenders Of Love again, great song. Thick Pidgeon is a good band, but pretty much everything on Factory in the 1980's was interesting and/or good I think. I'll probably have to get my hands on that 7" version of Lonesome Tonight, I only own NO 12" singles and it's one of my favorite NO tunes.

Having spoken to Mr Nice in the past when purchasing Cool as Ice back in 2003 - LTM came across as almost a cottage industry, a label where if you picked the phone up to make an order, you got to speak to the main man, who in turn was quite happy to have a chat. Remind you of any Manchester label of the 80s?

What I'm really getting at is a reiteration of my original point - here we have someone who consistently demonstrated a respect for the Factory legacy, and the anal retentiveness of the fans, and who should have had some strategic management responsibility on the failed remasters project.

It still angers me that London could be so incompetent.

I'll second that, the LTM website is a treasure trove of lost stuff 'n' shit. I particulary like his band biographies, this is a guy doing it for the love of the music and his product is so well put together.

Have been aware of this for a few weeks,altho' not the final tracklisting,I asked James about whether he could track down some of the more obscure Factory releases such as Abecedarians,which is a great track,& he mentioned there was a new Auteur release due,just concentrating on Factory stuff.Definately be purchasing

And good point about getting James involved in the Warner remasters,he did the liner notes for the Factory boxset,& did a great job as always

Yeah James Nice is a top man - I would have really liked him to have handled all the Joy Division / New Order remasters. Funnily enough I was discussing this very topic earlier in the week on the Steve Hoffman audio forums here is a what I wrote:

"A good spot on this LTM remaster - I have owned the 'Wake' disc for a while and never noticed it was a needledrop. However, you are quite right - in the booklet in small print it says "Due to the loss of the mastertapes...". On the whole I have lot of time for LTM they do a pretty good job of rereleasing Factory stuff - much better than Rhino ! I have nice sounding LTM discs by Stockholm Monsters, Crispy Ambulance and Section 25 (love "From the Hip").

A lot of Factory's mastertapes were lost when the label went bankrupt - Hooky salvaged some Joy Division masters from a skip (dumpster). Recently Oliver (Tony Wilson's son) reported finding some masters in his late father's attic (loft) - he is trying to repatriate these with the relevant bands (who knows maybe includes "The Wake").

On a different subject I recently scored a Factory CD copy of Cath Carroll's "England Made Me" album on eBay. What a fine sounding disc this is - possibly the best Factory disc I have heard. Great album as well - sunk without a trace on release as completely out of step with the music scene back in the day."

...although I have to say if I had a choice I get Steve Hoffman in to do the remasters - then we'd really be in for a treat! Seriously if any of you guys have never heard a Steve Hoffman DCC CD then do not hesitate to check them out - changed my whole perspective on the sound of CD.

If it wasn't for LTM a wealth of great music would just be forgotten. I myself own a nice collection of Factory releases, but due to various things I really love having a crisp sounding CD. I was thinking yesterday how nice would it have been for the JD/NO camp to have at least released the Westerworks demos with the recent remasters. I wonder if the 7" version of Lonesome Tonight is remaster that the guys at LTM handled?

I first listened to it in 1984 when I got the vinyl promo.

The tracklist in this link is slightly rearranged from the one at the top of this post. Also, the Thick Pigeon track seems to have disappeared...

Lonesome Tonight was released on the flipside to Thieves Like Us, and was first performed live in June 1983. Steve Morris: 'It came into being as a result of a mild Elvis fixation. The live version of Are You Lonesome Tonight (the one where Elvis changes the lyrics to great comic effect and cracks up in hysterical laughter) was very popular on the New Order car cassette player at the time. I found it very hard to listen to without cracking up in sympathy with The King - and we all like a laugh, don't we? It was at a gig in Ireland I think, stuck for an encore, that Bernard had the idea of doing Lonesome Tonight. Not knowing how the tune goes has never held us back, so in the grand tradition of New Order cover versions we made something up and Bernard sang the Presley lyrics with the odd bit of swearing. We enjoyed it so much it became a semi regular item in the set. The lyrics and music evolved over time until all that remained was the title, which refused to go. I really love Lonesome Tonight, and like 1963 a great lost B side. Although live it could be a bit hit and miss, when it did work it was always fantastic.'

Can anyone confirm it's the actual 7" version of Lonesome Tonight? Ordered mine a few days ago, but after seeing the Discogs entry I'm not that sure...

I bought this. This Lonesome Tonight is 12" version, not 7".

That's why the 2-disc sets are REISSUES, not REMASTERS.

In this case I can't see the point of complainments about sharing that version. I'd like to have a good quality rip myself.

Because it was posted before the CD had even been released. I'm sure James Nice was DELIGHTED by the attempt to sabotage LTM's sales.

Of course the 7" edit of Lonesome Tonight HAS appeared on CD...just take the full-length version from Substance and edit it down yourself. :D

There's nothing unique about it - I own a physical copy of that promo single. It's literally just a splice job.
