I feel old

20 years ago, one was regarded as being quite normal, well as normal as one can be at 14. It all changed on Easter Sunday ’89. Snow was falling and the trip to Birmingham seemed to take ages, even though it was only an hour away. Got to the venue with John & Lorraine a good hour before the Mondays were due on, looked round for t-shirts, unfortunately they didnae have any fookin small sized, so I ended up buying the concert t-shirt which swamped me. Memories are getting worse, even for me, but I can clearly remember being as excited as I was at the previous years Scottish Cup Final in which Celtic completed the double in their centenery season. We were sat up on the first row of seats on the right hand of the stage quite a bit back, but that didnae worry us, the Mondays passed by in somewhat of a haze, only clear memories I have were them doing Do It Better, which still remains my favourite Mondays track and the big ensemble at the end where they did what seemed to be a 15 minute version of Wrote For Luck. Exit the Mondays and then what seemed an age till New Order finally took the stage. Can remember Touched opened the set and looking round the arena to see the place going mental, particularly down the front of the stage and wishing we were down there, in fact, other than the MENA some 9 years later, that was the only time we were not down the front at a gig and even at that gig, me and John left a pregnant Lorraine on her own after the first couple of songs to join in the madness. They then did a couple of Technique songs which got everyone dancing, we knew the album word for word as the album had been on the record player on constant rotation for a good 2 months before the gig. Vanishing Point was majestic, being so excited I was shouting out guesses for the next song and was amazed to hear my prediction of 1963 come true. These were the days when you genuinely had no idea what set-list they’d play, we got more stuff from Technique which was great live, no matter what the doubters on here will tell you. Ceremony was immense. The last half of the set was what we would all associate with the staple of their gigs from here on in, the holy trinity of True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle and Temptation, but we were also treated to the proper full length version of The Perfect Kiss as the final song, I can remember being a bit annoyed that I didnae hear Blue Monday, but to be fair, I’d hear plenty of that in the following years. All in all, some fucking first gig! Slight downside was the sound at the gig – which translates onto the bootleg that floats about, but take nothing away from a cracking night. The Neworder obsession really began that night, so ye’s can all blame John & Lorraine! Happy Days!

Was the only sober NO I ever did, cos bizarrely, they weren't licensed or something.

Can't remember much of it.. Shaun Ryder shuffled through the crowd and asked me for a light at one point...

They also played 1963 possibly for the first time.

Funnily enough Bert, that was the only sober gig I was at.....and I still have troble remembering

I can mind Hooky taking a break during the set by sitting on one of the speakers at the front of the stage. Only dissapointment for me was that I never got to see Age Of Consent Live, a fact pointed out by Uncle John last year. Git!

Nah, down the front at Brixton amigo, though you have triggered ma memory, we were on the balcony at Liverpool Olympia in 2001, so that's two neworder gigs away from the mayhem.

Blimey, that was my first gig and all (had a chance to see them at Finsbury, but didn't go for some reason)...

I remember the day before my glasses got smashed, so I ended up using sellotape to stick them back together again (didn't have time to visit the opticians before the gig!) - looked like a right dipstick...

Yeah, it was a dry gig - I do remember Barney sitting down for quite a bit of the gig - maybe the e's had worn off? :p

Still can't remember much of it, and annoyed that I never made it to the Glasgow one - Gerald was supporting them on that date... Ah well...

Look what I found tucked away in the CD booklet of "Technique" - takes you back ! Can't I believe it's 20 years since I carefully filed away this ticket stub. I remember a little guy (stood next to me at the gig) telling me that the concert was almost as good as the CD - wasn't you was it Shug ? I wore my "Fine Time" Pill Design T-Shirt to this gig.

Glasgow was much the better of the two.

We're also approaching the 22nd anniversary of Brixton Academy '87, Grand National day, awesome.

I thought I heard them play it at Reading Uni. My mate was at Reading Uni and got me a ticket.

They played it at Reading Uni. Security took my friends recorder away half way through 1963. Hooky told them to give it back after the gig.

My first gig too!

I remember getting the coach from Newcastle, and it being a really hot spring day.

I was miles from the stage so the sound was lost around the NEC.

I also remember the Mondays being fucking gash - a messy soup of sound.

It was definitely snowing when we left Corby, can remember it well (for a change) I always thought it was Hooky that spent time sat on the speaker and not Barney. And Adam I am only wee so it could've been me mate, surprised to see how many people's first gig this was, I'm sure it was Hibster's an all.

Awwww, it's like everyone got their cherry popped at the same time. Like an episode of "Skins", but with a better soundtrack.

Wasn't the bar closed cos pissed Mission fans had wrecked the place a month or so before, hence beer ban for 'alternative' acts?
