I went to a Q&A session with Peter Saville in Beverly Hills, California tonight. Really great to see him in person and hear him talk about his views on design. Among the more interesting comments from him were about how:

  1. making money at Factory didn't occur to anybody until Ian died, and then the money started rolling in.
  2. throughout the years of New Order, it was the 18 years when New Order functioned as a democracy that was the most interesting to him.
  3. his working experience with Stella McCartney.
  4. George Michael authorized him to convince CBS Records to release the last Wham EP in its original album cover art, but resulting in creating a large sticker with the Wham logo, track lists, and photo of George Michael to slap onto the original album cover

Got a great bag of stuff as I was leaving the event... limited edition poster, t-shirt, booklet regarding Manchester artists, a Manchester bag... all great stuff. A very L.A. kind of event with Tim Burgess dj-ing at the end.

Did he say what he's working on these days?

The last work I've heard him do is for Brett Anderson but that was a year or two ago.

He's working on Manchester's campaign to become a world-class city, and talked about how his career in graphic design led him to work with the city's political process.

Here's a link to a blog by Martin Wong (Giant Robot Magazine) about last night's event: Martin Wong - Giant Robot
