Does anybody know of this song's origins? Was it a cover, and if so, who did the original?
I remember reading somewhere in an interview with Peter Hook that he said something along the lines of "Wasn't that a cover..?"
If it wasn't a cover, why didn't the band do anything with it? It would have fit nicely onto PC&L, I think.
Who wrote it, and who owns the rights to it? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks! :)
Too Late was an original. The cover version was Turn The Heater On, by dub reggae artist Keith Hudson.
By the time they started recording PC&L I think they'd moved way beyond Too Late. It's more in line with the original 586 (1981) or the Hacienda Christmas flexi. It almost doesn't sound like the same band.
They wrote it in the studio (Strawberry) for that Peel session. I'm guessing they thought it was more like something off Movement than where they were heading (which it is a bit). Maybe that's why it's called 'Too Late'?
They did re-record 'We All Stand' from that session for PCL, though I think the original version is far better.
I've oft wondered if the song had anything to do with the painting of the same title by Herbert Schmalz which, in turn, I wonder if influenced the Wolff image used on the front of Closer.
One of my favourites too. It's very strange they didn't every play it live as they were debuting very raw versions of new songs a lot around that time so it's odd that it didn't at least get a run out a few times at least like Homage, Let's Go or Skullcrusher.
