I like the music and the lyrics in the song "Mesh"(I was told recently that it was incorrectly titled "mesh" when the actual title is "cries and whispers"). Either way..did New Order ever talk about the meaning behind the song or what the lyrics meant? Thank you all.

cries & whispers is incorrectly labelled mesh on the 1981 - fep 313 - 1982 single
mesh & cries & whispers are both on the everythings gone green benelux cd single (fbn8)
not really help on the lyrics but clarification on which is which
also, both Cries & Whispers and Mesh had a completely different set of lyrics when performed live and sung by Hooky (1980 and 1981).
I think the question may refer to the Substance release of Cries & Whispers which was labelled as Mesh.

Does it sound to anyone like the song is talking about someone who is on the run from a bad past or wanting to flea his circumstances?(like people in Witness Protection program?).

Trying to work out Barneys lyrics is a fascinating past-time but I got a feeling they arent anything specific.
People use to think Michael Stipe was a great lyricist but (good on him) even he admitted most of it is complete dogswallop.

was very late getting to hear Cries And Whispers. Hithered and dithered for years about buying the Everything's Gone Green 12" because i already had EGG and Mesh on Factus 8. Finally bought a copy in 1986.

Micah, I doubt whether the lyrics have any specific meaning. They're in rhyme and metre and match the mood of the music, and are abstract enough to not give away any sense of the personal feelings of the writer(s).
It could well have been a committee of all band members that wrote the lyrics in this case.

I love the cryptic nature of early New order lyrics.. it sounds like Bernard was in a very dark state of mind at the time. Although they did tend to disperse the songwriting responsibilities among everyone at the time before Bernard took control. Wasn't Procession written by Stephen Morris, and I assume that Dreams Never End and Doubts Even Here were written by Hook.

I don't see it that enticing. To me, it seemed that Ian left a vacuum, a void, and the band didn't know where to pick up, so Barney simply tried to become an Ian-like vocalist. Ian wrote dark and cryptic lyrics, so Barney was only doing the same, but he lacked the emotion behind it, as it was more or less contrived to fit the band's sound. It wasn't a comfortable fit, so he changed into the singer we all now love... I'm glad he didn't keep it up.
I listen to really early NO for its open and naive sophmore attempts... I never take it too seriously. If it were serious music it would be complete drivel.
