Bad Lieutenant playing New Order songs live? Any chance?

Infortunately, none in my opinion. Little chance for Bizarre Love Triangle, acoustic probably

They played some on that Sky Arts thing. And some Electronic too.

The ones with not much bass maybe? Shellshock doesn't have much of Hooky's bass guitar in it

Probably the rock songs instead of the dance songs. Things like Love Vigilantes.

With 3 guitar players, someone can easily pick out Hooky's basslines, so I don't see that as any sort of deterrent.

I could understand why in 1990 Electronic wouldn't play any No songs, but now it would be just stupid not too. Its too late in Barney's career to start over and find great sucess. He needs to keep the fans he already has. So by playing a couple No/jd songs, it should keep alot of the fans happy.

I would say it's almost impossible that they won't play any NO songs. Didn't they already play two during their first TV appearance?

Expect things like Regret, Crystal, 60 Miles an Hour etc. Anything that has guitar can easily be played live for them, plus, the real question is will Barney give up Autocue?

I meant during these gigs later this year, of course I know they played those songs on TV :D

I wouldn't be surprised with any acoustic versions of Temptation or Atmosphere

We don't really know what the band will be like but are assuming that it will be a more basic rock band line up with live drums. Who knows how much synths if much at all, but they have three guitarists on stage so somebody could handle keyboards. It would be refreshing if Bernard would try a different approach with some older songs, without preset backing tracks. New Order had become way too safe onstage, maybe the acoustic performance was a sign that Bernard is willing to try different things and it would be cool if they reworked a few old songs.

He could always cover Frentes version of BLT, no bass guitar in there to trip up on

no doubt, bl will play any songs from the [jd/no] catalogue. bernard ( ) will play songs that he's very much comfortable with.

I'm betting he will play songs that he already played in their last tour. I would be suprised if he played anything new. I'm betting we will get Temptation, BLT, Blue Monday and LWTUA. Maybe Krafty, Crystal, Love Vigilantes. As for Electronic, I'm betting we wont get any. But if we do it will only be GAWI. Get the message if we are really lucky. And no Accoustic songs will be played live. That was for the show.

he did say they'll be doing some in the interview en francais, didn't he? otherwise, we'll be back to 45 minute sets, but most likely no trackshorts this time around.

I'd welcome a take on BLT like the recording barney did with Doves.

Not much point in doing new order tribute songs is there ?. might has well be re - order doing it !! it will be 'BAD' Lieutenent and maybe shit but suppose all will drink and be merry.Again i must ask the question ,why the fuck would barney etc go to all the trouble to set up a band just to do loads of new order songs ????????????

Bernard has said in his interview with the French magazine posted here that BL will also do NO and JD tunes.

The album apparently has keyboards on it, as evidenced in the press release. I can't see Sumner giving up electronics all together. I'd imagine the songs will be guitar based but that live BL will play along to sequenced tracks with synths and other electronic parts on them. Perhaps Barney and Phil will play keys sometimes as well.

Doesnae matter if Bad Loo/lef-tenant do Cerermony or Age of Consent or Sunrise or Temptation with bass ... it's still not New Order. That would simply be just Sumner on karaoke, even with the back-up of Cunningham and Morris. Best steer clear.

I would imagine that when doing NO songs live, BL's touring bassist will play Hooky's parts. Just as David Potts sang Bernard's part when Monaco did Blue Monday, and when the singer from ACR sang Barney's parts and their bass player played Gillian's parts when ACR did NO songs with Hooky.

And, believe it or not, not every New Order fan is centered on Hooky's bass. While I love Hooky and his bass playing, what initially drew me to New Order was Bernard's voice, the beautiful synth melodies, and the drumming from what I thought was a drum machine but turned out to be Steve Morris.

Why should Bernard ignore his history? Why should Bernard not play songs that he had a major creative force in writing?

Also, one thing I don't understand...

When Hooky played New Order songs with A Certain Ratio and Monaco live, it was completley and rather enthusiastically accepted by people on this site...

And now that Bernard Sumner, Steve Morris, and Phil Cunningham, 3/4ths of the most recent line up of New Order, and 1/2 of the original line up's of Joy Division and New Order, have chosen to do some New Order songs during their sets as Bad Lieutenant......this is somehow "Bernard Sumner doing kareoke?" and is unacceptable. What?

BL is 3/4ths of New Order. If Hooky had stayed in the group, we would possibly be getting another New Order record by now, as opposed to BL. Which I would have liked, because I loved WFTSC.

I think, they will do introduce their new album. It's probably half of the set. The Rest is old New Order or Joy Division stuff.

He should stick to his new stuff.

I agree, although I fear he will still play the same old over-familiar tunes. Let's face it, have any of the old songs sounded fantastic post-1998? At best, they're OK renditions. At worst, it's stadium dad-rock.

It went from "Temptation" and "Perfect Kiss" being the highlights of the setlist in 1993, to, well.. "Who's Joe?" and "Turn" being the highlights in 2006. Let's hope they play as much BLt (as opposed to BLT) as possible!

I hope they will sing NO songs, since I bought a ticket for the Paris show. I would be very unhappy to go back home after 30' and hearing the 5 or 6 best tracks of the album.

Think you've missed the point entirely. Monaco doing New Order songs or ACR doing New Order songs is still not New Order doing New Order songs, now is it? If you like, those examples are also just "Hooky doing karaoke". There, I said it.

One good thing which Hooky's done though is played the New Order songs which New Order weren't playing and people still wanted to hear. The likes of Sunrise and Dreams Never End. Still don't really mean anything when not played by the full ensemble though.

If people want to go see Bad Lieutenant then I don't think they should go clammering for New Order or Joy Division songs. Electronic certainly never played them and managed to forge their own identity successfully enough. Don't see why BL can't do that.

BL is really not 3/4's of New Order though is it? New Order was always so much more than just the sum of their individual parts so to qualify Hooky's input as a quarter of the overall sound is just laughable. Also, in BL it does sound as though Steve's presence is maybe a bit limited and Phil was obviously only responsible for WFTSC in the New Order world. This is just Barney's vehicle in the main. And if he wants to do JD/NO then fine, but I don't see it as something to get that excited about. Quite the opposite in fact. He should stick to his new stuff.

Point taken. Although no one is really in any position to tell Bernard and co. what they should or shouldn't play. They can play what they want.

But here is the thing.

You are older than me, you live in the UK, you have had the fortune to see New Order play in concert many, many times over many, many tours and years.

I am only 26. I live in fucking Ohio. I discovered New Order in 1995, when I was 13. I listened to them all through high school without knowing who they where, what they looked like, or anything about them. I just knew that their music filled my black and grey world with color.

I have only ever gotten to see New Order once, in Chicago in 2005. It was one of the best nights of my life, because their music is very important to me. It provided a soundtrack to my life, and seeing them that one time was magical.

Some of the older gents and ladies here have seen New Order many times. So you can complain about them not changing the setlist or whatever all you want, but for me, it was a miracle to see them play once.

Bernard is my favorite member of New Order because his singing, songwriting, synth and production skills are one of the main reasons I started to make music of my own.

So, the idea of seeing BL live and seeing Bernard perform is very exciting to me, and if they do New Order tunes, even better.

So, it may not be New Order, true, and it may not be exciting to you, but it sure as hell is exciting to me.

Plus, I think Sink or Swim is a great tune, and I played it for my co workers and they all loved it as well, so I look forward to BL.

Thats a fair comment. I'm 36, never seen new order live, never will. To be honest, I dont care who sings new order songs, take that could so them for all i care, but as long as they are played and loved and sung along to and enjoyed, thats me happy! They will do some NO and JD songs or it will be a short gig!
