It’s been quite awhile since New Order threw in the towel and still we’ve yet to hear a proper explanation from bassist Peter Hook about the split.

A few months ago, leading up to Record Store Day, the former New Order bassist said this to the Toronto Sun: “It was just a change of attitude, really. I mean, over the years we [in New Order] developed different tastes and different attitudes. Being in a group is all about compromise and the more you compromise, each of you, the better that group works... Basically it just got to the point where I thought I had compromised enough.

Now we find out that Hook has credited the split to, um, Alzheimer’s. In an interview with Spinner, he said, “I didn't think, which was proved wrong, actually, that Bernard [Sumner, vocalist] was very interested in New Order. I got the impression he couldn't give a fuck, to be honest, whether it happened or not. And it's quite interesting because when I told him I didn't want to work with him anymore through our manager, he didn't respond. Then he started telling everyone that I hadn't told him. I put it down to Alzheimer's. He seems to have forgot that he'd been told six months before."

And now that Sumner has formed Bad Lieutenant with Blur bassist Alex James of all people, things have come to an ironic full circle: Hook has also formed his new band, Freebass, with James on a four-stringer.

Maybe the manager lied, after all where was his interest?

Perhaps Bernard thought "why doesn't Peter have the balls to say it to my face". Or thought he could ignore it and act like he never said it. Sounds like it was normal for Bernard to ignore Hooky.

Hooky would be best to give this all a rest, nobody is gonna win in this, just a downward spiral.

At least Bernard should be happy that he doesn't have Hooky "holding him back" anymore.

Think Hooky is sounding a little sad now. he just should just shut up and get on with what he wants to do...

if it was Alzheimer's then how can Barney make a album with BL which takes so much work and dedication.

Steve wheels him into the recording studio, gives him some papers to sing and wheels him out and Barney thinks he had a great time with Hooky at the ice cream parlour.

And to think and believe that they were were "Here to Stay". Reading stuff like this really illustrates what happens with the absence of Rob Gretton... this is truely sad where the band has come to. They have become bitter old men... I still hold a small naive hope of a reconciliation. Many people would kill to have their stature, influence and fans in the music industry today, and I feel they may have thrown it all away due to petty differences.

You are absolutely right, they are a big influence on so many people and to just throw it away is bad, maybe the problems are bigger than we think, I also think that they will somehow put away their differences in the near future and comeback for something, remember they still got some left overs from the WFTSC sessions, so let's see what happens

Hooky said in an interview in 1998 (Uncut I think) that Bernard was like a big brother to him, that he looked up to him, respected him, and felt a need for his approval (not surprising as they were childhood friends).

Bernard has great difficulty communicating with people. its obvious from watching and reading interviews with him over the years that he has a very difficult time expressing his feelings, especially to people close around him. This is also mentioned a lot in the Nolan book.

Its almost like the has aspergers or something of that nature, where he can't communicate openly with people. This even comes out in his lyrics, which sometimes I think make perfect sense to him and no sense at all to anyone else.

Bernard seems to be quiet and emotionally distant, giving off a cold impression.

Hooky seems to be very emotional, warm, expressive, gregarious, and generally open.

I think part of this stemmed from a communication issue. I think Hooky wanted to know that Bernard really appreciated what he brought to New Order, and probably to thier friendship.

And I think that Bernard, being the way he is, never gave him that. So, Hooky maybe felt unnappreciated and disrespected by Bernard, and developed a resentment towards him, which built up over the past few years and ultimately resulted in him quitting New Order.

Its sad that such a great, important, influential band composed of really intelligent, cool, taleneted people has come to an end because two of the prinicipal members, who have known each other since they were children, simply cannot communicated with each other.

Barney blames Alcoholism, Hooky blames Alzheimers... The only logical conclusion is that it was a horrific night out that neither of them can remember properly!

I second that. Zachery, this is an excellent post. I think you are right. Alot of Barney's songs are about the failure to communicate.

Will Steve and Gillian ever throw in their input? Is it Phil?

I'd say that's a good hypothesis, and if it's true it's really a shame. It's too bad they can't seem to mend their friendship, but at least they have all that great music they made together to look back on.
