Different version of The Beach on the remastered Power, Corruption and Lies

After my post on 18/9/2009 I’ve had a chance to listen to £50 Note’s remaster and the ‘corrected’ version of The Beach on the remastered Power, Corruption and Lies back to back. The ‘corrected’ version is definitely a different take or a slightly less finished version of the original.

Compared to £50 Note’s remaster the ‘corrected’ version of The Beach sounds much brighter with more treble. It also sounds more ‘spacious’ with more use of echo and reverb.

There are several immediate differences that jump out to anyone familiar with the track:

1. Starts with snare, approximately 1 second before the original starts
2. Tom tom reverb/effect at 1:18
3. Extra beat/edit at 1:35
4. Different edit of bass sequencer between 1:35 and 1:57
5. Snippet of bass sequencer appears between 3:14 and 3:15
6. Snippet of bass sequencer appears between 4:20 and 4:21
7. Snippet of bass sequencer appears between 4:25 and 4:26
8. Obvious edit at 5:05
9. Fades out at 7:05 ending at 7:10, 10 seconds shorter than the original

Other than the extra bit of tape noise and Barney saying "1-2-3-4" at the start of Murder, I haven't noticed anything else different on this disc.

Barney says 1-2-3-4 at the start of Murder? eh?

Yes, there's an electronic sound like the sound of the tape machine being switched on then, very low in the mix, Barney (or someone else) says "1-2-3-4" and the track starts...

Oh ok. Never bought the remaster so wasn't aware of that.

It's on the 'corrected' version of the remasters, the discs arrived from Dr Rhino last Saturday...

Obviously some things were taked from master tape sources, but in the case of The Beach they used the wrong version.

We all knew at the time the reissues were announced that most of the master tapes have been missing for years. Rhino won't confirm what was legitimately remastered, what was substituted, and what came from the already commercially available sources.

i'm going to need some graphs, and charts to see this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it necessarily the "wrong" version? Does it have bad edits? I'm not a subscriber to the tired "if it wasn't deemed good enough at the time, it still isn't" bollocks. That attitude seems to have informed the track listings of all these extra discs in the first place, and that's exactly why they're so lame.

In fact, this means there is some hope as hopefully they've turned up another few "lost" tracks whilst going through the archive? Say, the full length version of "The Happy One".

I'm curious to see if any other "different" versions turn up on these discs, regardless whether it's out of luck or out of choice.

The snare starts approx 1 second before blah blah blah....10 seconds shorter blah blah blah.......snippet snippet...........blah blah blah. The band did this in one take. Everything else is down to the engineer.

The issue here is that they're touting it as something it isn't. The Beach was released 26 years ago on vinyl. It was on PC&L in the States and on Substance until it went out of print. The definitive version was available longer than some of the posters in this forum are old. If they'd list is as an alternate take, that'd be fine - but they don't. It's yet another careless mistake in a long, long line of them.

Yes, I would say it is the 'wrong' version because as £50 Note points out it's not listed as an alternate take and it's not the version that we are all familiar with.

The differences sound like mistakes that were then edited out by the engineer before the final version.

Anyone who knows The Beach and who hears this 'corrected' version would immediately spot the differences - which suggests that the person doing the remastering is not familiar with New Order's work: not a very happy situation.
