Would be alright if the lyrics evoked rich pastoral landscapes of windswept, rugged beauty. But they don't. They are there because they rhyme and / or because their authors are lazy.

Gawd, I hope it's because they are lazy...

I've never seen someone so irritated over lyrics...

It's the teacher in me, sorry. Most of my students, including special needs, could do better than much of this. As a NO fan of many years I can overlook a LOT but these are less than average IMO. For some people the tune is all that matters & that's fine. For me the lyrics kill an otherwise solid little album.

I like what you've said there, M1.

Although the rhyming thing does interest me.

It's about whether you're using the lyrics to convey a message, or to give the voice something to say that sounds good. Using the voice as an instrument, with a few poignant couplets thrown in here and there if you can manage them.

Both are valid, I think. And if you haven't got a message, should it stop you from singing at all?

Laziness isn't valid though. Perfection takes too long.

I don't get all the people who are so down on the lyrics. Lighten up,people! New Order were never a message band per se. Barney is a musician first & a wordsmith second. He'll never be an Ian Curtis. I like the lyrics. I find them sunny, optimistic & full of hope. I would much rather a great music with so-so lyrics than the reverse. If the music is lacking,no one would give a sh*t about the words. That said, I quite like the imagery on "Walk on Silver Water.":thumb:

.Some folks, gotta crap on Sumner whenever they can.

I mean, Bernard Sumner has been writing genius crap lyrics since 1982. How is "I think you is a pig, you should be in a zoo", the lyrics to to The Village, Subcutlture, SOTN, how are they any worse than what's on NCAT?

At least Barney's lyrics are full of bizarre nautical references and cliches that are unique only to him, as opposed to most bands, whose lyrics are just crap rockk and roll cliches (King os Leon spring to mind).

I know I should be glad, but if I'm honest with myself a little part of me was looking forward to discussions about moths getting eaten by dogs in years to come.

:rip: This thread

That is a shame.

When WFTSC came out the thread lasted for ages and was really funny. The official lyrics were based on what we came up with, too.

Keep it coming.

Talking of WFTSC if it wasnt for Barneys lisp, Id swear he sang "I RARELY hurt you, I nearly gave it all away":\ohwell:

I know for sure that 'we could always be friends' on TT sounds like 'we could always be fwiends'.

I also noticed that sometimes he prolongs his "s's". For example, on 'Getting away with it', it sounds like there are one or two more s's at the end of the word 'purpose'.

And even though my English listening skills are very good, sometimes I can't quite detect what Bernard is singing without a lyrics sheet.

Yeah that one of TT is really bad. I guess its just a flaw in Barneys speech (cant pronounce R's). I only really noticed it since 1996. Maybe its caused by his rock n roll lifestyle? Its a shame as it does spoil the songs somewhat.

"Making love and cwashing cars" "what are you pwooving baby"

But I doubt he's intentionally pronouncing it that way, though. I haven't analysed things that much so I can't comment on the post-1996 thing. It's fun to try to detect what he's singing without the lyrics though. Is this just his singing voice? Or his speaking voice too?

I always over-analysis things:crazy:

I think its just his singing voice. Ive never heard anything unusual in his speech.

It does give his songs some mistique. I would never had guessed "Most got eaten by a thug".

Im still trying to work out on Running Out Of Luck

"why do careless hearts fall into empty hands its a tragic starts then lies down in the sound"

i know its not right but i cant figure it.

Did the UK album have lyrics sheet? Im always baffled why only Twisted Tenderness had lyrics included when no other Electronic and certainly no NO albms had any included.

Most, if not all, Japanese editions of CDs by any artist contains lyrics, although occasionally you will see mistakes because sometimes when lyrics provided by the artist or record company are unavailable, they have to transcribe it.

The Japanese release of NCAT contained lyrics, and it came with the disclaimer that they were provided by the artist.

The bit you mentioned about 'Running out of luck', is supposed to be (according to said lyrics sheet I have): Why do careless hearts Fall into empty hands It's a trend that starts Then lies down in the sand

'Why do careless hearts fall into empty hands it's a trend that starts then lies down in the sand'

that's my best guess at it at the moment,

'tragic starts' was my best guess from the album,

but on one of the live versions it's much more clear and is 'it's a trend that starts'

I'm editing the versions of the lyrics I put up at the start of this thread as and when I hear stuff done live, as often it seem to be clearer to understand than the stuff on the album;

Though no doubt Bernard gets bits wrong/changes bits as he goes along anyway

Any one got any ideas on that last bit??

'don't give it all this life'???? don't ever be denied

'don't let it all just flow away'? or 'don't let it dissolve an flow away'?

the only bit I'm sure on is the don't ever be denied bit lol

:thumb: Thanks Leather girl, that fits in with the live version

Perhaps you should compare the lyric sheet with the ones I've guessed at and point out what's different, As that might be easier than asking you to copy them and type them all out for us, of course if you do want to type them all out that would be great too.

There may come a time When the days are short And you’re feeling like it just aint worth it all

And the sky is full Of the winter gale But there’s something keeps you standing by his side

I know it’s hard but you can't run away Sometimes it’s better just to look the other way

When you’re all alone In the dead of night And you’re wide awake but you just can’t find that light

(spoken: And I can see that you’re at the bottom of the well You’re holding on but then you can’t afford to sell You’ve got to know that everything will be just fine Forget that rainy day That sun is gonna shine

I know it’s hard but you can't run away Sometimes it’s better just to turn the other way (Sha la la la)

Was there ever a time when wrong was right As you try to hold on To the things that you like And I can’t count the times I felt sorry for you Cos you’re hollow inside like a bad shade of blue

Without you I'd be lost in a world that was made of ice Without you I would live like a beggar in paradise It’s the truth And I’m telling you straight I would never lie So walk away with me Walk away with me Like a runaway.

Tell me what I've got to do to get my mind away from you spell it out in black and white close the brackets do it right

It's just a dead end street rain and thunder where two rivers meet and you always took the best from me hit by lightning underneath the trees

I can't walk on water or still the raging sea I can't move a mountain or live eternally

No use being what you're not or crying over what you ain't got close the blinds turn out the light you won't see what you don't like

It's just a dead end street don't you know it cos it made you weep I can't show it but it gets me down I'm sick of living in this the dead end town

I can't walk on water or still the raging sea I can't move a mountain or live eternally but I am just a free bird hanging in the air don't care about tomorrow cos I know you're not there
