Hooky's Top Ten Hacienda Memories

My first visit to the Hacienda was memorable.
My 5'11 friend pushed straight to the front of the queue, I was a bit wary as I knew the type of people that frequented the Hacienda. She even managed to blag two of us in for nothing. I remember seeing the biggest bouncer I've ever seen in my life. We got in and pushed through the placcy curtains, and it was exactly as Hooky said, just a wall of noise and light hitting you. Superb.
Then my friend spewed up all over the back of my brand new outfit. I spent the entire first hour, washing sick off me and spent the rest of my night in damp clothing and smelling slightly of sick!
It was fucking brilliant!
Didn't spot any of New Order until at least my 8th visit. Saw Giggsy and Mick Hucknall all the time. Then one night, saw Barney dancing in a floor length black leather jacket, and I nearly fainted.
Good thread actually because others can post memories.
mine
Got a membership when it opened because they said members only for all new orders gigs there.so went hacienda for new orders first appearance in 82.we had a few in a pub round the corner (which i now of course know was brit protection) then round to hac,at first i thought it looked a bit stupid inside but then thought it was actually pretty cool.
i also remember going to see birthday party with nick cave there and they were fucking mental, loved that gig.
after going only maybe twice more in about 2 years,so about 84/5 by then (also saw new order sometime in 1983) the dj started playing some soul/dance type american stuff and i didnt like it at the time and thought it a bit too disco music so i didnt renew my membership and never returned ![]()
so basically all that rave, mad sex and drug filled fun probally happened later was when i'd stop going.
DAMN I SHOULD HAVE GONE AGAIN!!!

Yeah, I remember going to see Swans and Cabaret Voltaire there on two successive nights in about February 1986 and nearly froze to death because it was so cold there.

went a couple of times in about 1990. Saw Tony Wilson, passed Barney on the stairs and said hello, saw the twat Hucknall and talked to a girl who said she cutted Barney's hair.
bumped into an ex girfriend in there one night which was somewhat of a surprise as neither of us lived in Manchester obviously.
Remember the No Alla Violenza (Call the Carabinieri!) mix of World In Motion getting played as the last song of the night just before the 1990 World Cup and the place going mad. Great moment that was and was actually the first time i heard that mix.
we kipped in my brother's car in a car park over the road from the G MEX and then went out round Manchester about 5am trying to find somewhere selling food then headed onto Blackpool for 2 days on the piss on the May bank holiday.Think that Sunday night was when World In Motion went to Number 1 in the charts.
Could never be bothered with the queues and (on at least one occasion) too drunk to get in so usually slummed it round the corner in the Ritz.
Did go a few times though, first for New Order in summer '87 (The Housemartins were in the crowd) and a few club nights after that. Never really took to the place, more at home in the Ritz!
I was looking at a Hacienda 5th Birthday card earlier on, loads on the door on the way out of the gig.
That sinking feeling when you discovered that the queue was already round to the Briton's Protection. Giving up and going to the Venue round the corner.
If I'm being honest, the years 86-88 were my favourite times. When the Beautiful People began to turn up, I went off it in favour of less pretentious clubs.
In fact, I can pinpoint the night the Hac finally took off - the Mantronix gig in 1986.
I went there for a weekend in 1988, around the time Technique came out, and spent a month living in Salford in 1989, going there 'til my mates got sick of it or skint..
Musically all i can remember was Gerald and 808, and that 'Hardcore Uproar' song. 'Together' was it?.. think the bloke who made it died in a car crash, but the annoying chap with the stupid voice dodged the bullet.
