Control was like watching 4 hours of HIS images (he really doesn't like Anton and I was so tempted to ask him where he shot the Underground picture just to wind him up!)

The Hulme Bridge JD picture was his idea - the band wanted a shot of them looking south from the bridge and at a bus stop because they wanted to escape Manchester to go to London.

I think the time has come for an end to all this "cash-stalgia". Who else is left in the wings to cash in on having been around this lot? Ian's former Manager from the Civil Service? Hooky's boss at Salford docks? "My Life with a Music Mogul" by William the Dog?

... oh, and Barney & Hooky are phoney United fans. They got Keith Allen in to write the lyrics to World in Motion because they know nothing about football and would only have been able to come up with something like "kick the ball into the offside goal".

Anton Corbijn is a brilliant photographer and video director with a very, very distinctive visual style, and his style is evident all over Control. Visually, its very clearly HIS film. Of course he was going to recreate a few Cummins images for the sake of historical accuracy.

As for World In Motion...

In the Nolan Sumner bio, Bernard actually says they were excited about doing a World Cup song. The only part of the lyrics that Allen wrote was the rap that John Barnes did.

He struck me as a guy who was desperate to mark his place in the history. I know he did. The images at the time were the only thing we had pre-MTV but he took it a bit far for me.

Moved from Manchester to London in 1987 yet used "Manchester" in every answer he could - despite the fact he's from f*cking Salford which is actually a city as well!

He also commented that "they" - being him and Morley - protected the "Factory Brand" by, for example, having no pictures of Ian smiling released to the NME.

The section of the JD documentary where he re-visits the Hulme photo shoot really doesn't stack up with this account.
