Hooky on unreleased WFTSC tracks

I was at the Hooky book signing in Bristol on Saturday - he was really nice BTW, friendly and chatty with all the people that turned up.

Anyway, during the Q&A bit I asked him about the leftover tracks from WFTSC and this is what he said:

There are 9 left-over tracks, although a couple of them still need to be mixed. Hooky was conscious of the fact that their promise to release these songs had never been fulfilled because of the split, and he wanted to resolve it.

What needs to happen next is that the band need to all agree on what to do with these leftover tracks - i.e. how and when would they be released. At the moment Barney and Steve (and all of New Order's former management apparently) are busy with Bad Lieutenant, while Hooky is of course busy with Freebass and his books. So it may be quite a while yet. But at least we know that these tracks have not been forgotten about and they are still in the pipeline.

Which is good news IMO, as I really liked WFTSC.

My understanding is that they weren't held back for any reason other than the deadline for the album caught them before these songs were finished.

Don't you remember? Or am I delusional? Just before they released WFTSC, New Order said they were getting along so well that they already were planning a brand new New Order album to be released less than a year after WFTSC ...

They kept some of the session tracks (I thought it was 7 tracks) off of WFTSC so they could then take those remaining tracks, add a few more, and release a whole new full New Order album in less than a year. Suppossedly many of these unreleased songs are of single quality, since they felt they had an overabundance of top quality tracks... so they were going to make two albums out of it and make twice the money

I think bernard mentioned that WFTSC didn't sell well enough, and the label didn't take up the option or didn't seem interested in releasing a new album. Which in hindsight is probably why we got the singles compilation

IMO im not really surprised WFTSC didnt sell that well. I personally thought TURN and HNWYD would have made better singles, I didnt like the artwork and never saw any videos.

I hardly play it anymore but I still really like Get Ready.

Can't wait for these! The only track I skip on WFTSC is "Working Overtime". "Dracula's Castle" is my favorite, never understood the flack that one copped.

Each to their own. I like Whos Joe, HNWYD and Turn best. For me Dracula's Castle isnt a bad song, but I think theres too much in the mix and its a bit busy. Also Im not fond how the chorus follows the verse (well you could say it cuts into the verse). But thats just my opinion.

I like all those ones too. In fact I rate the whole album really, apart from that horrible closing track.

If the band produces the album themselves, it has chance to be a great album. All they need is an independent label and stay away from those stupid producers.

In a way I'm glad they don't release a New Order album this year.

It might have included a track featuring lady Gaga.

I remember that one! Sits pretty well with all the post-split remarks Hooky made on how they hated each other for years, doesn't it?

I thought it was 7 too, but Hooky definitely said there were 9 at the book signing. 9's enough for an album already, isn't it? I'd be happy enough with 9, anyway.

I really don't get why WFTSC didn't do well. It was far superior to Get Ready IMO; I'd also put it above Movement, PC&L, Republic, and the second half of Brotherhood.

Around the time of the release of WFTSC Hooky let slip In a radio interview that there were seven tracks left over and that they later went back and recorded two more to complete the set for a possible album.

And I think the vast majority in here have come round to Get Ready being better than WFTSC, despite its flaws.

All the time they spent on tour together in 2005-06 probably made it worse.

the drugs you are on now seem to be more than enough...

I think we all know really why the last album didn't sell. Record labels trying to push New Order pop music on a Britney Spears pop music world. New Order was on a major label that didn't know how to handle them. I'm surprised that singles even got released here in the USA. I heard Krafty on the radio twice, once when Garbage was doing an in radio appearance at our local X radio station, and a second time when WFTSC was released when that same station played it during and all New Order lunch hour (usually reserved for flashback play).

So when a song like Turn could have been a great single, they release Jetstream, the most "poppy" sounding tune on the disc. Unlike most of you, I really don't have a problem with Jetstream, but even I can tell you that it isn't going to generate interest.
