Never Cry Another Tear - stop moaning, its brilliant

Listened to the whole thing for the first time last night, having only heard Sink or Swim.

I love it. It's the most coherent album from anyone involved in new order for years. I really like Jake's vocals, he sounds a lot like Jimi Goodwin and we already know his voice works well with Barney's. I found myself cringing at lyrics only once or twice compared to whole songs on Get Ready or WFTSC. My personal favourite song is 'This Is Home'.

So, well done guys. More to come in the future i hope.

My favorites at the moment are "Twist of Fate," "Summer Days on Holiday," "THIS IS HOME," (love that one), "Walk on Silver Water," "Shine Like the Sun"...

...and I can't comment on "Falling Trees," "Split The Atom," "Higher Wider Deeper" or "How Long" yet - haven't listened to them enough times to decide.

I think this album is good also it is not a classic but it is good and very enjoyable, I am so shocked with all the crappy reviews it is getting in magazines. I don't they have a clue of what good music is.

A great album to listen to whilst at your workplace. The Chorley Guardian

Good album with some high points, but not brilliant, imho. I think the slower tunes could have been with Hooky's bass in there.

I don't think it'll be a masterpiece to everyone, so I don't really expect every magazine to love it. After all, I only take reviews with a pinch of salt, although the Japanese magazines I've seen so far have given it fairly positive reviews.

You're absolutely right. This is a fucking great album. And who can imagine Bernard composing and releasing 16 songs??? In my opinion, at least 14 of them are great. Some of them, simple brilliant. The man really work well this time. He and his mates. Love it, my CD arrives monday!

Having heard the 12 tracks from the Amazon download a few times... "This Is Home" is far and away my personal favorite, by a mile. Solidly in the "like" pile are "Sink or Swim", "Summer Days", and "Twist of Fate".

I'm really surprised by the love for "Poisonous Intent" -- I hate that track. As soon as the faux call-and-response "newfound waaaaalth" bit comes in I want to shove knitting needles in my ears. Love the verse, loathe the bridge -- there doesn't seem to be a chorus.

The rest I can take or leave. I find myself leaving it quite a bit. I had a buddy who once described an album as "really good to listen to when you don't really want to listen to anything". That's a pretty good description.

I prefer Warsaw 77 demo tape instead, more original

Like Jake's vocals too,remind me a bit of Ian McCulloch in places.

I agree It wouldn't be right if we couldn't have a moan! I can't believe how much I like the new album, the first play was really tortured, It all sounded very flat. But since then i've been listening to it everyday. I think it takes getting over the initial negative reaction that it isn't New Order. I've found that i've warmed to the album much faster than I did with WFTSC. Jakes stuff still doesn't do anything for me, but the shared vocals and prominent backing vocals are really good. Runaway, Twist of Fate, Poisonous Intent and Running Out of Luck are the best song IMO

It's good that the majority now seem to like it.

Or maybe their musical style appeals to people over here? I don't know....I've seen a couple blogposts in Japanese claiming it's 'OK'...and some that said they liked the music, but I've never seen a blogpost or a review so far in Japanese that outright says 'They're horrible!' or anything like that.

Its BLAND. Trouble is, for many years i've been incrementally lowering my expectations of New Order and respective side projects but it has gotten to the point where its just not possible to compromise any more.....I hope that the record sells well, but it is mush and it is sad to see where our friends who created such a pivotal, groundbreaking and revolutionary sound have ended up.

Give me Cheryl Cole's new album over it any day.

I noticed there's a some editions of the BL album with bonus tracks. Wich version shoud i get to get hold of most of the bonus tracks? and where can i get it? Here in Holland they only have the regular one on sale...

I guess there's not an edition out with all of the bonus tracks on them? or is there?

i THINK the LImited edition i got with TWO bonus tracks MAY be released PROPER in a few weeks AFter the AMAZON exclusive. I agree. Especially on Shine Like The Sun (radio4 forecast). I couldnt put my finger on it at the time but now youve mentioned it, he does sound like McCulloch.

The more I listen to this stuff the more I love it. I went from liking 2 songs, to 4 songs, to 6 songs, to almost all the songs now.

NCAT has definitely grown on me a lot quicker than WFTSC and GetReady.

There's only a couple of clunkers and it would be nice to have Barney do all the lead vocals, but overall its a cracker.

I love the album - I can see how some are dissapointed that it's fairly MOR, straightforward Rock, which it is. There's even a trace of country and folk. But there's never been a NO-related album that WAS simple, straightforward rock so it's a new flavor to me.

The only bad review I've seen so far is from Pitchfork. All other reviews seem to be 'it's pretty good, but nothing mindblowing'.

As for why the British posts on here seem to be so much more disappointed - cause the British HATE EVERYTHING!

Dunno if I'd say brilliant but I really like 50%, the other half I have no interest in. That's fine, 5 new Barney tunes are more than enough to make me happy.

On a side note, anybody else enjoying the new Ian Brown album? It's a bit preposterous/cocky and it shouldn't work but I LOVE it! I like every track on the album, not often I can say that. Been listening to it non-stop for days.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't understand all the people slagging them off & being so negative. This album is GREAT! I mean, it's not a masterpiece but it is plain GOOD! Twist Of Fate doesn't do much for me. Bernard sums it best himself "What i'm doing is incredibly wrong", "People keep telling me i was better before"

This Is Home - yeah i do quite like this one.

Running Out Of Luck i like - quite an optimistic feel to this one

Dynamo - s'alright i spose .

Poisnous Intent - New Order intro which is a bad thing 'cause it just makes you want it to be New Order. But it isn't.

These Changes - Fairly optimistic feel again

Walk On Silver Water - really like the chorus to this one. Quite a driving tempo even though it's mid paced

Shine Like The Sun - chorus ain't too bad

Runaway - nice intro. Not a bad song to chill out to. I like the piano. And the build to the chorus and the chorus itself.

Head Into Tomorrow - Not a bad acoustic number though Jake can't decide if he wants to be Jimi Goodwin or Noel Gallagher

You know what surprised me most about this album? There isn't a whole lot of anger or bitterness. Aside from "Poisonous Intent," it's a pretty sunny upbeat record. He really sounds like he's looking forward and not back. He even sings,"forget that rainy day,the sun is gonna shine." Maybe the sheer sunniness & optimism is what's turning off some fans. I quite like it.

Also the single SOS is getting heavy airplay on NME radion, it was in the B playlist and now they moved it to A playlist.

Has anyone heard SOS on UK radio? apart from the live/acoustic studio sessions I havent caught it yet? though radio 2 might give it a shot.

I finally got paid and downloaded the album (14 tracks) from i-tunes last night. Id heard the tracks a couple of times when it was up on BL site for a few days to preview.

I really like it and I didnt miss Hookys bass. But I mean that in the same way that I dont miss it when listening to Electronic. Dont get me wrong, Hooky has played plenty of memorable bass lines over the years, which has defined NO. Im just saying that I love the sound BL have got, as they are.

It is a very catchy, jangly guitar laden album. Quite laid back, but also has some uptempo tracks. It would have been great to have listened to this over the summer. Its kinda got that Technique feel.

Stand outs so far for me are: Summer Days On Holiday Home How Long Runaway

I do like it, still not better than any NO album but I ilke it. Probably the best side project apart from the 1st electronic album, will definatley play it lots, its nice but not out there brilliant, but it may grown on me more only got it yesterday, the box thingy was delayed. the real test is if I still like it next year.

I've have only heard SOS and Dynamo. I'm waiting till I get the album to hear the rest.

after listening for a couple of weeks now its really grown on me. I really like it now. good album

This album is a cracker. The more you play it the more the songs grow. Apart from "Sink Or Swim" (overplayed) and "Head Into Tomorrow" (dull) I think the over 12 tracks are great.

Barneys most cohesive album since Electronic debut? I can hear shades of Times Change, Special, Love Vigilantes and (unfortunately) Working Overtime on tracks and theres a guitar in Running Out Of Luck sounds a bit Cure-ish.

Barney really delivers on the vocals and the melodies are very strong. I also like Jake Evens songs on the album. These Changes is excellent.

I think there are a few potential singles from this album: Summer Days On Holiday, This Is Home, Running Out of Luck, Runaway, Walk On Silver Water, These Changes.Although Ive still not heard Sink Or Swim on radio or seen video on music channels.

I stopped listening to the album for a few weeks (I'd overplayed it), and just came back to it again yesterday in the car. Not to exaggerate, but I think it sounds more bloody brilliant now than I did previously, especially "Summer Days". I'd go now from rating it a 6/10 to about an 8.

Yup it is a very good album, I gave it 8/10 also, I haven't listen to it for a while cause I played it to death, but I will pretty soon.

Wow. I hardly agree with you at all! "Twist of Fate" is still my favourite. "Running out of luck" is my 2nd favourite, though. "SLTS" is comfortably my favourite Jake track, although "These Changes" is a really well-written song.

On the whole I was a little disappointed with the 4 "extra tracks" that I've heard. "Walk on Silver Water" actually reminds me a bit of "Sabotage": not bad, but not great either. "Falling Trees" has a decent chorus but a poor verse - and Sumner's worst NCAT lyrics, which is some going on an album including "Dynamo". "Split the atom": hmmm, it's a waltz. Can't think of anything else that caught my attention about it .

Some days it's a 6/10 album, some days a 7. I can live with the lack of synths, bearing in mind Bernard's other "projects", but it sure suffers from a lack of pace.

My favorite tracks that I play over & over are:

"Twist of Fate,""Running Out of Luck,""Runaway," and "Walk on Silver Water."

The other tracks I like but aren't in love with as much are:

"Sink or Swim,""This is Home,""Poisonous Intent," and "Summer Days on Holiday."

The absolute gem of this album has to be "Running Out of Luck." God, I love that song. It's very New Order-ey! "Runaway" is a close second.

I can't seem to get past the thoughts "hooky's bass should go there and this song would just kick arse"... it hits me so often that it kinda throws off the whole experience. If I can ever get past this, I might be able to enjoy it for what it is, but until then.... its NO without Hooky, so lack luster from what it could be

I'm going to be playing it (and loving it) as much as NO/JD/Electronic, it's a truly great album IMHO.

I enjoy the album, it is better then WTFSC and Get Ready, just rather upset they couldn't make their New York date.

Listening to "This Is Home" now and a few others after a break. This album is fantastic, but I still can't decide whether I prefer it to WFTSC.

All in all... I would give it 8.5 out of 10. The good tracks are fantastic, its the mediocre tracks which let it down. A stripped-down NCAT with around 10/11 of the truly wonderful songs would guarantee a 10/10 rating from me.

Finally got the cd about a week ago. It's great!

Most of the reviews I've read for this were simply lazy garbage - 'this sounds like that NO song', 'that sounds like this NO song' - I don't think any of these sound blatantly like any other NO song. The worst-written review was, predictably, Pitchfork's.

It's great songwriting and has the same emotional sweep they've been doing their entire career. I don't really care if it's formulaic, conventional songwriting. It's a great formula that I'll probably never get tired of.

My only complaints: Barney's voice sounds really strained on the chorus of 'Runaway' ... and 'Falling Trees' is a definite low-point.

I actually love Head Into Tomorrow, I think Jake has an immense talent.

How can you say that 'FALLING TREES' is a GREAT song and one of my FAVORITE songs on the album, it has great lyrics and great music in it.

Yes.

Sumner found an amazing vocalist - I would be pumped to hear him produce Jake on his own LP, a protege.

I tend to hate most new vocalists that I hear, but this guy has something going on.

To me the lyrics are not that bad as people say, who cares if it is simple but the song makes up in the music and the chorus of the song, in my opinion it is still a very good song.

My theory is most bands lyrics look really bad when written down. Probably why most bands don't bother.

'Bad Lieutenant - Never Cry Another Tear

. Bad Lieutenant, Bernard Sumner's post-New Order band, is a pleasant surprise. Never Cry Another Tear was created by three guitarists (also including Phil Cunningham and Jake Evans), and it shows. Unlike New Order, which was sometimes like disco's answer to Goth music, this un-key-ish release is filled with many different six-string colorings.

Although Sumner has never been one of rock's great poets, he sure has a way with notes (if not words). This group might not have Peter Hook in it, but these songs nevertheless have sharp and lasting melodic hooks. It's hard to understand how something like "Dynamo" was relegated to being the b-side to the jangling "Sink Or Swim" because it features chiming guitar lines that would make The Edge proud and power drumming toward track's end that might earn a wink of approval from The Who's late Keith Moon. Although not extremely profound, lyrics like, "Life is a precious thing," are at least not embarrassing.

"Sail On Silver Water" borrows the phrases, "I can't walk on water/Or still the raging sea" from a Biblical story, which is not a bad place to look when struggling with writer's block. Hey, if you can't be original, steal from the classics.

Most surprising of all is closer, "Head Into Tomorrow", which is an acoustic guitar-led track! If New Order ever used acoustic guitars, they were likely hidden way down in the mix.

New Order fans likely hate this CD, simply because they grew fond of New Order's smart keyboard-based sonic. I thought that. The song is superb otherwise. Shame they didnt work on the chorus a bit more.

IT was sincerity.

The more I listen to the album the more I like the tracks that didnt grab me first of all (Poisonous Intent, Head Into Tomorrow, Shine Like The Sun). I think its a good, poppy, catchy album. Bernard is a master of melodies.

My faves are currently - Summer Days On Holiday, Home, Running Out Of Luck, Changing Times, Runaway and How Long.

I must be missing something here...

The whole album is pure fluff that sounds like a demo.

No edge at all. I've even been sad enough to try and like it. Been driving around in the car with it on loads of times, it's all just bouncing off :-(

Funnily enough, once the album ends, the next track up is a remix of BLT, which is like a bolt of lightening in comparison. 22 years old and has more going on in the first 5 seconds than this whole album in it's entirity.

Oh well.

It's alright.. Linus is a bit backward. He normally types in capitals.

He drums like a fucking demon though.

It's currently part of the 2 for 10.00 deal in HMV . Must be doing really well to aleady be available for a fiver!
