none are perfect.
Singles is a good overview overall thru the history of the band. Could have easily done a little more with the 2 cd set to make it more definitive. Sound quality is loud and "remastered" whatever that means certainly not improved, other than that few complaints.
Substance is considered a classic. Stops at 1987 thou, and mild fans are not too interested in the second disc. Missing original "Confusion" and "Temptation", but have well done remakes. Some of the long 12" are still not full versions, which had irked fans for years.
Best of.... meant to be an addition to Substance, and with shorter versions. Kind of an awkward collection, but songs are still good. Best bought cheap.
International... meant to be a sampler for worldwide users, and odd pointless idea in the age of the internet. People were scratching their heads about that one.
Retro... an odd sprawling pointless boxset, almost like random songs on your computer. Not sure what insight it would give for the uninitiated.
Get your hands on Substance, or the '1981 - 1982' 5-track or Retro if you've got some cash to spend.
Retro is great as it's the only NO release with an expansive booklet with interviews, quotes, etc. Long-time fans will gripe about it because it doesn't have anything they don't already have but if you're relatively new to them it's perfect.
