How long do you believe it will go on for?

Books, remixes, reissues, the SAME tired interviews, God AWFUL bands ...

The more I think about it the more the Hooky/Barney 'fallout' seems like a clever marketing ploy.

After all, EVERYTHING these people do these days IS designed for you to part with your cash.

If anyone had told me 30 years ago it would develop into this I would not have believed them.

It's the suckers who buy it, and troll around the country hoping to get a sniff of what it was once all about, I feel sorry for.

Personal choice big fella, we did the BL gig in London and loved every minute of it. For the last few years, the pre-gig piss ups are nearly as important as the gig itself. As for the books etc... I cannae recommend Hooky's book highly enough, fucking fantastic read and stories that have not been told before. I understand where yer coming from, but I for one am clinging onto the new stuff for everything it's worth. Still hoping to do BL in Hamburg in December and I look forward to what FB are gonna throw our way as well. NU ORDAH ;)

In case you hadn't noticed the music business has changed.

You used to be able to actually make money releasing singles and albums, with a little touring to top up. Now the music sells in far reduced quantities and is perhaps only a break-even thing depending on the costs involved in recording. It has been reduced to the level of promoting all the other activities that a band might do, touring, merchandising, books, remixes etc etc.

There's no coincidence that we're in the era of bands reforming to tour where once this was a total no-go area. They all realised that their income from past albums will dry up totally otherwise. They can no longer live off the past.

Hence....lots of other activity to get you to part with your money.

A great post at the start of this thread.Some of which i also believe to be true in my OWN case.As i have choosen a somewhat different lifestyle since i reached 50 i can see both the bands and the fans point of view.I wouldn't call it trolling around countries though.The guys and gals i meet before the gigs are an integral patt of this concert going.I even met up recently and stayed sober for a couple of hours so i could remember what we chatted about.But my need to own all these revamped old albums or new BOX sets i shall leave to the more finacially and hard working guys here.Nowt wrong with this but at my age i worry that it is all going to get skipped like the JOY DIVISION masters when i leave this mortal coil.I think i should donate some of the items to THE URBIS so that they can display them in 2030! :lol: Plus i like collecting badges since Robertsons don't give theirs away.It has all gone very PC. :nonono: :wink:

Things tend to look bigger, brighter and cooler when you're in your teens than when you're in your 40s don't they?

I've had more fun 'trolling' around the world watching the noughties version of NO with a group of like minded souls, who I wouldn't change for anything, than I had scraping together bus and train fares to watch them in the 80s. As Shug says, there's a load more than the gig going on and as long you keep a sense of realism and perspective around the importance of pop music as you get older then you should be just fine

Sydney, Rio, Paris, NYC, Barcelona, LA, Melbourne, Athens, Vancouver.....yeah it's been shit Dave, thanks for your condolensces. Oh and that last gig in Buenes Aires....don't cry for me Argentina :laugh:

I doubt it's those who can cope with the reality of changing expectations as they age that need sorrow or pity. Is it Dave?

I still have a little money left, so I'm still up for another release or book or DVD, to paraphrase not the nine o'clocks sketch about points of view, I think New Order are great, I'd gladly sell my house and all my possessions to hear more from them.

The irony to all this is that when NO 'disappeared' between Republic and Get Ready many of us would haved loved a remix/compilation/book to keep us going. I'm not a Viking, have never met up with them but have still enjoyed most London and Manchester gigs since NO started, own pretty much everything officially released by JD/NO and related and hundreds of promos/bootlegs/downloads. I just about hold a life together involving partner and work but still got to Hooky's book signing (and Durutti Column the same night) and BL at Heaven. Tickets bought for PSB/BL at the O2 as well though in the gods. So bring it on I say. You're only being fleeced if you choose to be.

Anything I can't download I pinch from the shops and I sneak into gigs without paying so none of it bothers me.

see...I'd say the piss ups are MORE important...whilst I enjoyed the Wimberlee gig...I enjoyed myself much more with you crazy fuckers at the Globe...

and I don't recall much of the Wolves gig...but had a blast in that place we all met up before hand...

of course, I should be going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings...sooooo...
