Old Tapes to CD

Hello peeps. Bit of a problem. I've got over 500 JD/NO live recordings over the years, nearly all on cassette tape, and I want to put them onto CD. Anyone know of a good and reliable software package that can do this ? I have a CD burner but have so far failed to get decent recordings coming out despite original tape quality being excellent.

In fact, if anyone wants to assist with this, you can have a copy of each recording (I send you tape, you burn 2 CDs, keep one and send tape/other CD back to me). Anyone ? Mail me if interested.

Roxio 'Toast' version 5 suits your task and is only a mere £50 approx. With this you are provided with 'Spin Doctor', a hardware recorer, and utilities to then burn CD's (DATA and Audio) and edit the waveforms if you need this function. 'Spin Doctor' also has the function to remove hiss and having used it it really works well. It is a very effective package.

This package takes L and R input and you press 'record' when ready. The recording will be identical (almost) to the tape and there is zero fuss and bother. Once the hard disk has recorded your cassette (any length depending on hard drive space) - you just burn onto CD.

It really is easy ... Easy, however, you do need an audio input into your PC ... or if you have a Mac this is usually standard fair.

If you would rather download an audio recorder (presuming you can burn audio CD's easy enough) - head to www.tucows.com and pick a hard disk recorder from the 10 million on offer for nothing.

Remember though, nobody said it would be easy.

All i can say is it a long slow process and after aprox 4 weeks of trying via tape to minidisc ,then to PC i have now gone direct from amp to PC.Trouble is WMP plays up,EASY CD causes havoc,MUSIC JUKEBOX doesnt play ALL the time.In other words it is a MESS.I too am trying to download 50 cassettes and HOOKY'S WALLET came up with some software which if works i will tell you about.Perhaps he can explain it better than me.Meanwhile if i EVER get it going properly i will give you a shout!Just done DISCREET CAMPAIGNS today for OLD BLUE and it was painful.PC crashed under XP several times,one track wouldn't copy...then i couldn't fit itALL on 1 CD. Listen fellas, having being somewhat involved with music and digital recording for some time now (since I was knee high to a snail) I can confidentaly state this:

A) Buy a Mac B) Buy Roxio Toast

Plug the audio L and R our from your cassette (no need for an amp. - cassette players have pre-amps) to the audio L and R in of the Mac. Load Toast and press record. Burn the CD when you've finished.

Yes but the problem is not the amp or pre-amp ,it is getting the stuff back onto the PC in a good format afterwards.Recording the FULL CD of FAC ALL again when this is ALL tested but as i can't buy a MAC....too much beer to buy,then i will persevere with this.Hopefully soon it might EVEN work.Thanks for the suggestions though SIR. Look, you don't need a Mac - anything with a line input will do (Hank's sounds just swell). Toast Jam Butter Margarine is the name of the equivalent PC package which should do the trick ... it's worth shelling out the goodies otherwise you'll spend 40 nights and 40 days downloading knockers from the international networks instead of forking out the reds and getting on with the gig. Incidentally, bunging 500 tapes onto CD sounds like doing porridge.

I don't get you Mick ... what do you mean get it on your PC? ... just plug the tape deck into the line inputs, record the music and burn to a CD! ... you don't need to get a job to do this Mick so stop panicking.

By that i mean it records ok onto the hard drive ,just won't burn to the CD BURNER without corrupting and PC hanging.A new problem since XP came on scene.

Mine has just one line in...does yours have TWO? I've got about 8 inputs including optical, just no tape deck. Well that sounds mighty fine...seems that i am well behind even if this is a new soundcard...only about 5 . Some now have a dual socket for both CHANNELS if you get my drift!

I'd say there's about 300 tapes all told - many of the early gigs fit two to a C90. 20 years of obsession. Nice one EASY E...i have just completed my first proper attempt tonight at cassette to CD and i am pleased with results.Used MUSIC jukebox to copy,made a few adjustments to track it one by one and then editted out some of the noise to reduce it to a 75 min concert.Input was SHUGZV 1986 at BIMINGHAM TOWER BALLROOM .Picked this cos i wanted CONFUSION .Then i burned via WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER under XP now.Not a bad result.I am very happy with results and don't mind my comments about FRED...he's a sound guy and there ARE very similar things about you two.But i love a good joke, a wind up and a mystery!:D Personally that HOOKY'S MALLET who was round at my house on MONDAY is a woman i think! Good luck with your taping but quite a lot of the ones i have heard are not much cop.

Just a thought - I've done this with the tapes I had (about 30) and they came out pretty well. All on CD now - I'm quite happy to provide copies, especially if you have tapes of concerts I don't have that you could convert to CD for me!!!

Thanks. Ive got cool edit pro v2.0 but I don't really know what I'm doing!

Cooledit is what I used and it works well - you can amplify quiet tracks and remove hiss quite successfully. It also is good for fading in and out. You can play around with it for a while and then save tracks when you're happy with them
