THE ALTERNATIVE ESCAPE EVENT

Marking the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis' death (18th May 1980), this special Alternative Escape event, held at Brighton's Duke of York's cinema, will include a screening of Anton Corbin's Control, the highly acclaimed biopic on the Joy Division front man. Following the screening, there will be a panel hosted by Lisa Holloway with leading figures connected with music from Manchester.

As well as discussing the impact and influence of Ian Curtis and Joy Division, the panel will assess the huge impact, of Manchester's music and its key artists over the last three decades – which could include Factory Records, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, The Verve, Oasis, Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow, James, Doves and The Smiths, among others. There'll also be a look at musicians and bands that were influenced by Joy Division.
No British city has spawned so many influential and successful musicians. For decades, Manchester has, particularly over the last 30 years, produced a wealth of legendary acts within various genres, especially “indie”. This Alternative Escape event, presented by The Space and Excess Press, will bring together some key figures from the Northern city to a particularly creative Southern city. Despite not matching Manchester’s musical output, Brighton has seen a rapidly increasing amount of acclaimed and successful acts emerging, such as Bat for Lashes, The Kooks, British Sea Power, White Lies and The Freemasons. Brighton has a hugely vibrant music scene, as demonstrated through events like Brighton Live and, of course, The Great Escape.
CONTROL
From leading photographer and music video director Anton Corbin, Control is takes Ian Curtis’s story from schoolboy days of 1973 to his suicide on the eve of the band's first American tour in 1980. The BAFTA nominated film explores the pressures that Curtis felt, from his epilepsy, a failing marriage and a band that relied on him – all in an attempt to explain his decision to hang himself at the age of 23. Control is based on Deborah Curtis's biography, Touching from a Distance.
