Just got back from seeing HOOKY and HOWARD MARKS live at BOLTON Albert Halls.Met up with Alex and Jemmie. It was a top night,starting with video footage on Hooky and Steve being interviewed by Zane Lowe,plus a few other snippets like Rob Gretton "They're into GAY DISCO".
Howard Marks arrives on stage,who introduces his good friend,and ivites on a night with HOOK and CROOK (!!)
Hooky surrounded by an array of old basses,including his first ever guitar,the one he and Barney wired through Barney's gran's record player!
He performs ELEGIA to a backing,and THE HAPPY ONE.
Then followed an interview of HOOKY by MARKS,entertainly about the use of drugs.There were a few months of The Hacienda which never made it into HOW NOT TO RUN A CLUB ,because he couldn't remember any of it! He just heard off people,that he was a twat. So when he went on D-TOX,he had the Joker card,coming back as a new person meant,"I did that? Ah that was THE OTHER ME!"
Talking about his career,right up to FREEBASS,there was a short break,while punters got to see a gallery of collectables.Hooky's CLONE THEORY,A1 MUSIC receipts,FAC 51 Trainers,a VIKING BADGE!! Numerous prints.
In fact I spoke to HOOKY at the end,and he saw my MONACO "MUSIC FOR PLEASURE" T-Shirt,and asked me to get it on display. "Take it off!" I said "If I get my top off here,I'll frighten everyone off"
2nd HALF was a Q&A from the public,who got to post qustion cards in a box.Couldn't resist putting in a card with Jemma's "PLATT FIELDS,hmm,HOOKY DJIng,BARNEY,STEVE ,PHIL playing. A ONE OFF NEW ORDER TUNES perhaps??"
A much asked question on the night,Howard asked "Will you ever record or play with NEW ORDER again?" To which Hooky shouted "YES......and here they are!!"
Ah well we could only hope.
A very funny anecdote arose when someone mentioned MICK HUCKNALL. Hooky said that one night they were just inside club,and he culd here shouts from outside,"Mick Hucknall coming through...Mick Hucknall coming through." And Mick Hucknall came through the door. And one of Hooky's mate's DECKED him! 
Subject of downloading came up,and Hooky said he felt sorry for the backlash LILY ALLEN got over her comments. It's like you doing a week's work,and then someone telling you "Right you're not getting paid for that"
Got to the subject of FREEBASS,and the initial problems of people buying FB tunes on HAC site,but they didn't receive the download after the money had been debited "AHH SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT! I'LL THINK I DO THAT WITH THE NEXT SINGLE!!"
Night ended with HOOKY and HOWARD MARKS performing DARK STARR of Freebass E.P.
A cracking night,dispelling any preconceptions that you may have heard it all before,a very entertaining night,and very funny.

i went to the brum glee club night with the hookster:
great to see the man himself in great form ,musically and anacodately as well. it was a great idea putting all those collectables on show...bought back some great memorys of the band playing the tower ballroom. the videos were just a slight intrest as im sure most new order fans had this information or seen it elsewhere...it could of been a little longer maybe? the first half with howard was intresting but i think peter could do it by himself. the second half with audience questions was really a great idea...but too short(we could of gone on for hours i think). as usual there was a fan there who had too much dutch courage to drink before hand and kept asking question that were a bit naff and butting in when peter spoke. i didnt know you could write down a question to be answered by peter so i missed out, but someone did ask about the stockholm monsters and i now know they will never get back together....lol all together a really good night ..not too pricey but i would of liked the second half to of been a bit longer...good to hear the latest freebass song as well.....thanks very much peter

yeah there was a couple of lads ejected by the bouncers at one point. another lad seemed to be intent on doing all the talking at one point going on about who he thought was going to win the world cup when that subject came along. this wasted time which was all too short.Hooky got fed up with him in the end and asked for more serious questions.
Funny when he was talking about Johnny Rotten on the 1989 US tour,heard the story before but good to hear again,what was it about Rotten didn't want New Order to be headliners? but New Order told him PIL were in fact headliners which swayed Rotten to do the tour.except New Order would be coming on after them Said Rotten never really got New Order. Hooky took the piss out of Birmingham a fair bit
yeah it did bring back memories of the 1986 Tower Ballroom gig. bumped into a lad i know who also attended that one and we both agreed it was an amazing gig.he still says it's the best gig he's ever been to in his whole life.
someone asked if Barney would be phoning Hooky in the morning to see how the first night of the tour went to which Hooky replied "Oh, Barney phones me every morning" Boxers or briefs? someone asked to which Hooky said Barney nor him wear anything, "that's how we got together, slapping each other's bare arses in the dressing room"
Hooky said John Entwhistle was his favourite bass player ever and regrets not taking the opportunity to talk to him at a party after the Finsbury 2002 gig, said he got nervous and did a runner which he eternally regrets as Entwhistle died a couple of weeks later

Hooky's taken a fair bit of stick over some of his decisions lately but this actually sounds like a well thought out idea and a good format. I would deffo be interested in going if this came to town.
was led to believe there would be some previously unseen New Order and Joy Division footage but i didn't spot any 
there was the compilation of clips before Hooky and Marks took to the stage and it looked like some more clips were planned to be shown at the start of the second part after the interval.however there seemed to be a technical hitch and cue lots of scrambling around of the cursor on the screen and bits of audio which started and stopped.One bit if i remember right was Tony Wilson saying ".. and do you know what Shaun said next?!.." before the gremlins cut it off and silence hung in the air at what Shaun could possibly have said next. As the silence went on audience members started to shout out what Shaun might have said .Stuff like "You're a cunt Tony" and "Give us another line of coke Tony!"

Doing the Boro one.
On my ticket(Ticket No 51,as it goes)it says doors 7pm,starts 7:30pm.
Even if it's 3 hours long,which I can't see,more like 2 probably....you'll get a train back to Darlo no bother Andrew,and the venue is only a stones throw from the train station.Job's right.

Birmingham went on quite late, though i don't think they came on til nearly 9pm? The last train was 11pm and at 10.50 i was still in the venue watching Hooky and Marks doing Dark Starr at the end of the show.Had to leave before they finished the song in the end to leg it back to the station!

Yeah,as well as the HOOKY BOOKY WOOK,some top t-shirts,including the "WE MADE HISTORY ,NOT MONEY" shirt Hooky wore at FAC 251 opening.Also some vey large prints of HAC on sale,and a painting of Ian Curtis (didn't see the price)
I went to the Milton keynes show last night and it was superb. Hooky and 'crook' were on good form ,to tell the truth I could've sat there all day listening to them chat... Elegia was stunning, I took my wife up the aisle(!) to that track so it was quite moving. The Happy one has always been a fave of mine and to hear it live was fantastic and to top it all Hooky was using my old Yamaha !! Nearly forgot, the display was very interesting with his old gear and tapes etc and THOSE BASSES I was in bass heaven..
Had a brief chat and got my limited edition Revenge t - shirt sighned at the end....
If you haven't already get yourself along to one of these shows they really are worth ever penny! So much so I'm going again to the Oxford show.....
Agreed. I particularly liked getting up close to his Bass collection.
The stuff in the display cabinet was really interesting too. I was particularly interested in Rob Gretton's resignation letter!
A highly entertaining eveing last night at the stables. A few highlights (for me anyway).
- Hooky was hugely entertaning,and although i'd heard or read most of these tales before they still sounded fresh and amussing.
- It sounds like there could be a fair bit of Joy Division stuff to be worked on (and maybe even released!)
- Loads of great stuff to see in the cabinets plus a rather nice painting of Ian Curtis
And a couple of low points.
- Video sound wasn't too good (could be my ears though)
- Everytime Marks opened his mouth I felt like nodding off.
- freezing cold beer.
- A N.O. re-union seems further away than ever.
All in all a good night out.
