Barnes to feature in re-recording of New Order's official song for England's 1990 football World Cup campaign for Mars TV ad

Mark Sweney Thursday 15 April 2010 07.22 BST

All together now: "Catch me if you can, 'cos I'm the England man..." Twenty years after John Barnes became an unlikely rapper in the official song for England's 1990 football World Cup campaign, Mars has signed the former international to reprise his cringeworthy World In Motion turn in a TV ad campaign.

Barnes will feature in a re-recording of New Order's World In Motion for a new Mars TV campaign launching late next month. Mars is also launching a competition to give members of the public the chance to appear in the ad.

The original World In Motion video featured an uncomfortable-looking Barnes on a training pitch, miming his rap lyrics with a football tucked under his right arm and World Cup song perennial Keith Allen larking about in the background.

In 2008 Barnes was coaxed into singing the rap on TV by Vernon Kay during an episode of Family Fortunes.

The Mars campaign, by ad agency AMV BBDO, will see a 30-second ad run on TV and a 60-second version appear online at http://www.marsbar.co.uk.

Last October Mars announced a five-year partnership with the Football Association. Earlier this year it launched a TV ad featuring former international footballers including Peter Shilton and Terry Butcher reminiscing about their proudest moments playing for England.

For the last World Cup, in Germany in 2006, Mars rebranded its chocolate bar with the word "Believe".

The company has slightly amended the words of Barnes's rap to insert its brand, as follows:

Verse
You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
There's only one way to beat them
Get round the back
Catch me if you can
Cos' I'm the England man
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan
We ain't no hooligans
This ain't a football song
Three lions on our **Mars**
I know we can't go wrong

Chorus
We're singing for England
EN-GER-LAND
We're singing the song
We're singing for England
EN-GER-LAND
We hope this year will be the one!

Didn't Hooky recently say that they won't re-record it because the amount of producers coining royalties would make the whole exercise financially fruitless? (I'm sensing a pattern here...) although I'm betting the band, well Barney and Hooky not liking each other very much has some bearing on the whole re-record process.

Was it Keith Allen who wrote the original rap then? Are they painting $100,000 on a big card and showing it to Barnes before he raps the new version? I bet he won't piss himself.

Or drink Sunkist in the process...

John Barnes - what a fat over-fed sack of (c)rap.

It's not Mars bars he should be advertising, more like friggin Hollands Pies.

 :p

Watching that made me feel sorry for John Barnes. And who was the douchebag impersonating Keith Allen? I did sort of like the cheesy cheap keyboard rendition of WIM.

Strange.

Goldfrapp??? You naughty naughty boy. I have so many lurid s***** fantasies about Goldfrapp (that's just Alison, not Will) that it's enough to make me two dogs blush and bolt out of the house with the tails between each other's legs.

How many times have I seen Goldflapp?? God YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY TIMES?????

Listen here man, if it's neck pain you wanna cure from, try standing up dead straight with your back upright (not slouched) and belting out the old ad jingle to Bodyform at the top of your voice for 30 minutes every three hours for the next day or two and maybe that might help tone your neck muscles.... Your neighbours might not like you much but you sure as hell may feel much better within yerself.

Mmmmm. Shame they're going to lose today - and it's, like the 7th most popular sports in America too. Ratings might get beat out by a Kansas City Royals-toronto blue jays game or something.

EDIT- err, sorry 'but that. Been on vacation with the missus, so haven;t been able to taunt anyone for a while. Still think Howard pulls it out today.

Belt out Bodyform  seriously i can imagine that doin the trick actually, though the ibuprofen seem to be kicking in now.

Was first time i've seen Goldfrapp live.Fucking amazing they were.Alison's vocals were beyond top notch. She belted all the notes out with consummate ease. She was positively BEAMING when she sang Head First off the latest album.Think she was probably thinking about her lesbian lover as she sung "Head First in love...".Forgot that Will Gregory doesn't actually play live shows with Goldfrapp which is a bit weird, turned round at one point and he was there at the mixing desk helping twiddle the nobs.Alison's live band are great though, bird on keyboards and keytar certainly brings a lot to the show.Sound quality in the venue, Leamington Assembly was top drawer.

Twelve times and counting. That's my tally. Of course she has also graced songs by Orbital, Tricky and Add N To X (perverted analogue robot-obsessed synth-shaggers who sadly fell apart some years back now), but seeing her and her manifold image changes over the years is quite dizzying indeed. On the last tour but one - Seventh Tree album - I nearly ****** ***** *** **** *** **** ** ***** ** ** such was the sizzling ****** friction being generated on stage. It was the hottest gig I have ever been at for a very long time and suffice to say I needed a very long lie down in a darkened room afterwards. Listening to The Killers.

:p  :evil4: :evil4:

Get a room lads.

Besides, Alison's getting on a bit. She's a mad as a lamp-post also, i can confirm after buying her a white wine spritzer in me local approximately a decade ago, and engaging in some bizarre conversation about opera training.
