Tony Naylor on why bands should quit after three albums, see NO bit below:

New Order: It is inconvenient that while 99.9% of bands – anyone but Kraftwerk and the Beatles, basically – only have three good albums in them, those albums don't always come at the beginning of their career, or even in order. Some bands take time to grow into themselves. Which is where record labels come in. If Tony Wilson hadn't been such a notorious pushover, Factory might have rejected Movement and Power, Corruption & Lies and forced New Order to produce something better. That "better" would have made for a godlike triumvirate: Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique, after which that should have been it – the end. See also: Radiohead (The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A) and Prince's extraordinary purple patch (1999, Purple Rain, Sign O' The Times).

On the other hand, The Guardian seems to like JD---maybe that's why they disregard NO?

Anyway, I trust my taste in music than some journo. As long as I like something, I don't care what anyone else thinks of it.

Thank you Guardian for showing me the way, I will mend my ways and delete all but the three albums of every artist on my iPod.

They have good taste as you see

I've also thought and described Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique as the godlike triumvirate, but even the harshest of critics would have to admit that Technique was at least as good, even though very different in tone.

For most bands it's true though; Album 1; shaky but interesting, Album 2; Usually great, Album 3; Wheels getting a bit loose.

can think of lots of bands where my favourite album is not in the first three, but then can think of many more bands that don't make it past album three

fair play for using the term purple patch in connection with prince, even if it does miss out albums like dirty mind or parade in his list of best albums

It's just more shit from journalists to justify their existance!
