Probably been covered to death but lets see if anybodys opinion has changed.
Personally, I love the film and Ive lost count of how many times Ive watched it (often drunk). It appears to be factually incorrect, exaggerated and often plain old made-up which I think upset many fans. However, I like to think of it as a drunken tale told with fondness and sentimentality in the pub.
And it got me into The Durutti Column which, as the great man said, is 'great to chill out to'.
I didn't like it much either. I MUCH prefer Control. That is a brilliant film. Sam Riley was superb as Ian. I bought the movie straight on dvd as I knew I would enjoy it and I wasn't wrong. I loved the chap who played Rob Gretton. Me and my sister laughed at all the bad language he was using ie 'how are you going to cut deals without a phone you daft cunt, no offence mate I call everyone cunt'. Did he really swear as much as that? And the final scene when Debbie enters the house and you hear her scream is very moving. I really feel for her. It makes you think what on earth it must have been like for her when that actually happened.
So no I don't rate 24hour party people. Sorry Gene.
No apology necessary, its opinions im interested in. I would say that its a bit unfair to compare '24HPP' to 'Control', though (A bit like comparing 'Bummed' to 'Unknown Pleasures'). 'Control' was, in true Anton Corbijn style, like a piece of art, quite timeless and a much better film.
'24HPP' was 'Control's scabby cousin twice removed, but likeable for all that.
it depends on my mood, if I'm happy and feel like a laugh, then 24hpp but if i'm miserable and feel like being even more miserable I'll watch control

24HPP treats the material as sort of an inside joke. I don't really see how the movie is accessible to people who didn't already know something or two about Manchester's music scene and who the players are. I like Steve Coogan, and he did a great Tony Wilson, but overall, unless you lived it, you wouldn't get it. Other than Coogan, the acting by the others isn't really that impressive. I mean, why bother even giving an actor the role of Alan Erasmus if he's just going to stand there? There are no standout characters except perhaps Curtis, and Shaun Ryder. Most of the cameos are a bit meaningless too, in my opinion.
Control, on the other hand, is less convoluted and more straightforward in the storytelling.
Hopefully I can go 2 for 2 this month on NOOL....lol. I feel it’s very hard to compare ‘Control” to “24 Hour Party People” because one is a playful story about “Factory Records” and the other is a accurate and serious story revolving around “Ian Curtis” and “Joy Division”. Of course “Control” is the superior movie, but “24 hours Party People” is funny and interesting in it’s own right. So "Control" for me.........
both 24HPP and Control are more for the type of folks who have heard about Factory, might own an album, but are not nutters like the NOOL fanatics we are.
the only film for us is the Grant Gee Joy Division documentary.
and New Order Story (UK 120min edition)
only documentaries, without hollywood actors, can truly satiate us.

Very untrue,get fucked. Good film.
Not sure why people are comparing 24HPP with Control... in two completely different genres telling two completely different stories. Not even remotely similar. Apples and oranges fucknuts.
As for the original question, 24hPP has its moments, watched it once and enjoyed it, but haven't had a desire to watch it again.
When legend becomes truth, print the legend.

NewOrderStory is great but I wasnt aware there was a 2 hour edition. Have to do some searching. So irritating at the end when the camera stops as I think Bernard was really about to start ranting about something. Great DVD.

A colleague at work couldn't get into see the film he wanted to see, so opted for Control on another screen. Didn't know anything about Joy Division or Factory - but has since begged, borrowed and bought himself a respectable collection.
I wasn't comparing 24hpp 2 control.was just saying i prefer control.i have the grant gee & no story as mentioned earlier and like them both. Got no story on video so mite need 2 get a dvd copy of it.
24HPP is a distinct film which cleverly played out some key events in our fandom. Control is a bit too dark for me to watch over and over, don't get me wrong, it's an amazing film with amazing performances..but 24HPP just seems to be a movie you can indulge in over and over. It has its weaknesses but so does Control.
I love it! Draws upon draws of DVDs at home,but this comes out of the draw every few months or so.It might not be as factual as CONTROL,but it captures both the JD era and MONDAYS era,with great tunes and very funny too. Downside New Order hardly get a look-in. But a great companion to the film,erm as well as David Nolan's AHW book (cheers David,slipping that fiver in my pocket) is Tony Wilson's 24HRPP.A really witty book....if you read books,if you don't you should probably read more....
My wife bought me this from a book club for a pound.....and it's SIGNED!!!!!!!!

Agreed. I'll either pick the book up for a re-read and then watch the DVD (plus extras) or stick the DVD on then dig the book out for another re-read.

They're both great movies but I give the edge to 24PP. It's funny, interesting and has a great spirit to it that is always entertaining. I don't think you'd have to know anything about the music scene to enjoy it as the Wilson character is interesting enough to carry the movie.
Control is also great, but could've been amazing if it just had a better script.
I love 24 Hour Party People. Also maybe the only time a lot of us will be in a film! (Reading 98 clip) :)

That is VERY cool! Guessing the gig scenes right? Actors playing Ian etc played the actual music didn't they Isaac?

Exactly! Killing off the main character didn't have the twist in plot I was hoping for.
I still love it, it's emphasis on Tony Wilson was correct and although NO-JD story and factual accuracy suffered as a result it's still a great film.
