My First NO/JD Purchase Was....

In an attempt to remind ourselves of, perhaps, happier times why not share with the group the very first New Order/Joy Division thing you handed money over for.

Mine was a second hand cassette of side two of Substance. I was a poor student at the time, dance-floor fretboards were just a pipe dream then (and now). I bought it at the holy Hectic House in Macclesfield and it was either that or something by the Macc Lads.

I always wondered if both sides had been traded in together (for a Macc Lads album, natch) or someone had done the unthinkable and chosen side 1 over side 2.

Anyway, it was a great introduction for someone who'd only heard the singles at that point.

Substance 1987 on vinyl, the day it came out. It stemmed from seeing them perform True Faith on The Roxy the week before. Hooked from then on. Was aware of them previously as my elder sister bought JD and NO 7' singles as they appeared on the shelves. Good times. :)

14 years old in 1981 - had heard what turned out to be the 12" version of IALP on John Peel - a couple of weeks later found myself in a dept store in Milton Keynes - looking through the bargain bins and found the 7" of "Ceremony".

Got it signed along with some other schtuff by Hooky when I interviewed him for a 'zine 7 years later.

Mine was the 12" of confusion in 83 (even though I thought it was The Cure at first).

Then found out they also did a little ditty called Blue Monday and then found out about everything else....amazing days for me......still clearly remember the shiver down me spine hearing New Dawn Fades for the first time......magic.

You are right, we gotta remember how top they are and put the negative shite to bed.....its like shooting fish in a barrel at the minute.

Played the first three NO albums the other day back to back. Pure quality. No amount of "cashing in" will ever change that...thank f***.

my first purchase was substance 2lp when I was 15, a cheap german pressing without the printed inner sleeves, nevertheless a complete revelation. I immediately bought technique which was the recent lp at that time and then the older albums. Since "World in Motion" I bought each record and single on release, also by all side projects (except the 2nd Monaco-lp), since today. I even got the "best of"-Joy Divison CD!

Blue Monday 12inch vinyl. Bought in 1983 on my 10th birthday day out to Edinburgh with my mum and dad. Knew nothing of the band, just knew that song from 'playscheme' in the summer where one of the big boys that organised the football blasted it non-stop from his ghetto blaster. I also went to the Edinburgh Waxworks Museum and then a Buck Rogers' themed burger bar back in Glasgow that day. I was sick in my dad's Sierra on the way home but fortunately not on my new record.

Unknown Pleasures Xmas '79 bought with a WH Smith record voucher my uncle had given me. And of course it's still magic.

Brotherhood on vinyl when it was released. Shortly after PCL on vinyl which I always called "Roses" as I didn´t find the name until much later on the vinyl itself.

I first had Substance on tape, but that was stolen from my boyfriend and I refused to give it back.

I think before I replaced it with the CD, I might have bought Brotherhood then started buying the back catalogue.

They played Blue Monday every night in the disco when I was on a family holiday in Majorca in 83. Bought the 12" when we got home.

Shortly after that my brother gave me Closer on cassette for my 14th birthday.

The back cataloge (which was fairly small at that time) took care of my paper round money in the following months and they've been the soundtrack to my life ever since *wipes away a small tear*. :)

Well I definitely got his money's worth. The stickers fell off as I transferred it from stereo to car on a daily basis for about two years!

Atmosphere had come on the stereo when we were all sat in my mate's room getting stoned one afternoon. It was a tape of the John Peel show from the night before. When the song finished we all noticed that one of the lads was in floods of tears. This was a surprise because this lad was known for being a bit of a psycho. He turned out to be a massive JD fan and he kept us enthralled for ages with the story of Ian and the band. I scuttled into town the next day and got Substance and so it began.

I wonder if, in future years, someone will answer this question by saying "I bought this yellow guitar, right..."

PC&L in a short-lived record store in Edgewater Florida was the first thing I shelled out for. My very first NO possession was Technique on cassette, kindly provided by my uncle for my 14th birthday, and I'd talked my brother into spending his allowance on Substance, which I hijacked, naturally. First JD was a Peel Sessions tape in the bargain bin of a different record store, maybe a year or two later.

Blue Monday, September 1983. Was hesitant to pick it out of the rack in the shop at first because i thought it was bloody OMD as i mistook the die cut sleeve as something related to their Dazzleships album which was also had a die cut sleeve. Had to confirm with the shop assistant it was Blue Monday before purchasing.

Thought it was that single with NOVELTY on the B side but maybe it was UNKNOWN PLEASURES.A long time ago in the 70's.I had HAIR,a job....a Wife. Glad it's allover

First read about IC death in Smash Hits - then heard LWTUA played everywhere.Loved the song but didn't connect the two - don't forget in those days no computer/MTV/or even many music tv programmes just the odd chance of hearing something you liked on John Peel.Read in NME PH was voted in top 10 of their best bass players poll.Went out and bought the 7" single LWTUA and then Closer was a christmas present that year.All the pieces of the jigsaw began to fall into place.

Hmm ... so long ago. I do believe it was the first JD Peel on good old vinyl (Transmission version: IMMENSE!) and EGG 12". Both were imports in the States but worth every bit of cash for a kid working in a Greek deli making squat in '85 =)

And then the 2nd Peel with that bone crushing version of Sound Of Music...

I was down at me mates in 87 and he was playing BLT from Substance over and over again so i borrowed his cassette,i liked it that much that i went and bought all the back Catalogue on CD ! I spunked nearly a weeks wages and i've been hooked ever since!

Its cost me a bloody fortune over the years i can tell ya,the collecky is 28 pages long and counting!

I can remember when i was a snotty nosed kid, me dad (our Roy) playing LWTUA and i really liked it,i think the daft sod threw the vinyl out when he got a Cd player!

Went through 4 sets of Substance tapes in the end as well. Just the absolute best.

Blue monday 88 (in 88 - yes I've been there since the original batch of remixes ) on 12" - which didn't leave my turn table till I got substance on tape. The guy in the shop put the blue tape with the blue cover and the red tape with the red cover so I listend so it wasn't till blue monday didn't come on I realised I'd got something wrong.

Saying that the fact Murder was placed in the wrong place (or was it missed out?) on the track listing really through me.

What made me feel like new order were really where I was at was my next purchase at nottingham's infamous rob's records 2nd hand record shop. I saw the cover of state of the nation (7") and instinctivly knew it was a new order record. It was like being in on the joke.

Fill..i only got the LIMITED EDITION 2 x lp(promo) so what was the cassettes you got?I take it the RED labelled cassette went in Blue covered case and vice versa.Only ever saw the LARGE white boxed ones in WOOLWORTH but due to their size and lack of space on shelves the boxes were marked and thus i didn't want them.Wish i hadn't been so bloody fussy.Good to read some of the comments in this thread. I used to tape songs off the radio back in the '80's and I recall I had The Perfect Kiss 12" taped on a cassette only for my sister to tape over it with "lets wait a while" by Janet Jackson,she did later buy me Substance though which must have been in the summer of 87.

I did have "For You" on that Dogs Bollocks compilation EMI released in 96.

BLT 12" when I was 12 or 13. At the time I remember taping my own mixes of it on my parents' all-in-one Pye system - how it remains unscratched to this day is a modern miracle!

Lowlife - got me hooked. As did Pumped full of drugs - seeing sunrise on there blew my mind

....'Substance' on CD to replace recorded cassette copy of 'Substance'. First JD was both albums and JD Substance all on cassette when I got my very first paycheck from very 1st job.

Substance 1987 on CD. The year was 1988 IIRC.

First no was substance on tape, a 16th birthday pressie and i can't remember which jd i got first.i think it may have been substance.

umm... first my sister received a taped copy of Substance from a boyfriend of hers... I was 12 and heard the frog croaking on the Perfect Kiss as I walked past her room, and was hooked. I stole the tape from her player, and it stayed in my room... she didn't seem to notice. Two years later the tape fell apart, so I went and bought a cassette version (surprised there was a second side to the tape). Listened to that continuously, until it fell apart and I bought the CD. That CD was scratched a couple years later, and I bought another CD.

Funny enough, I never even thought about buying any other album until Republic came out (after I bought Substance three times over). It still took a couple more years for me to get the back catalog... wasn't until I was in college.

Bought Unknown Pleasures vinyl because I thought the cover was very unique and cool. I had never heard of Ian. Later bought 1981-82(EP) because it was in the Joy Division section of the record store. I wasn't even sure what exactly New Order had to do with Joy Division.

Sure did suck finding out about stuff before the internet! Damn kids have it so lucky nowadays!

Everyone has to start somewhere and its good that with this band folk dont seem to care how long you've liked the band. On some forums if you werent there at the beginning you're not a "proper fan". Whatever that is.

Like quite a few others, Substance 1987 on cassette (from Woolies - i.e. in the white oversized box) after a couple of mates in 5th form kept playing New Order tracks. I'm still peeved that I never went with them to the Finsbury Park gig (was that 1987?) - first gig was to be the NEC with Happy Mondays as support in 1988.

As for buying the rest, gradually started buying the albums shortly afterwards (with money off paper rounds) - have been hooked ever since. I seem to remember that I bought both the Touched By The Hand Of God CD Single and the True Faith CDV Single before I had a CD player (that wasn't to follow until 1989'ish)...

mine was 2 single cassette boxes that were housed in a card board sleave with the substance cover on. The B side tape was the longest tape in history and needless to say my walkman ate it one day and it was never the same once crimped!

Joy Division Permanent from the BMG Music Service about 1996.

My first New Order purchase was the Substance 12" after being reaquainted with New Order after hearing the shitty ass cover of Blue Monday about 97/98.when I was a little kid I used to listen to New Order on my brother's boom box. I distinctly remembered being in a trance whenever I listened to The Beach.

unknown pleasures in 1979 , bought from a record shop on the Brew in stockport, about 1/4 mile from where it was recorded,, sis division bought transmission when it came out, which i took off her as i liked it more.
