I know it was a good idea, a NOVELTY even (namecheck for Rocket Mick), but they take ages to load on a thread with several replies ! Don't they increase file size and decrease server speed ? Sure as eggs are eggs they are fookin' my peecee speed !!

Yes, some people abuse a little, 320 kb for a picture is quite a lot of material.
Mine is 37k and it's not bigger than a normal picture.
I think I will fix a 100k limit to those, and put an option to allow to skip them... what do you think?
Think my Calvin and Hobbes was 147; I've no problems getting something under 100 it that'll help the slower-connected amongst us.
I'd go for that.
Also because it will be better visually -- after all we want to look at messages, not freak shows. :p

Actually, I prefer the freak shows....:p
the calvin and hobbes is great. i'd be sad to see it go. maybe just a smaller version, though i have no problems with pages loading. how's the virtual discography i have? i could actually benefit from slightly higher resolution but it's only 30k.

Basically, what I did was save a pic of Ian that I liked from a JD website, then typed in the address it was at. Lo and behold, I didn't screw it up, and I've stuck with it because it's a great pic (I wouldn't mind being able to enlarge it slightly). I don't know shit about avatars, though.

Indeed. Sometimes I feel stupid for trying to make my avatar as small as possible and for respecting the limit of 50 x 50 pixels.
I reduce the size of the avatars I created to be under 100 k. I know some of you are using these. So I guess if you still want to use these avatars, use these with the smaller files size. I think this only applies to snucker and Iain Curtis

Well, maybe 50x50 is a bit small, but still, people at 800x600 might have a problem above that.
Mine is above that. I'd say, if you don't put a too large picture it will do, but I reserve myself the right to remove those too big or that screws everything!
I'm sorry - but these are avatars - AVATARS YOU SEE They should be limited to something like 80x80, and their max size shall NOT exceed 30-40 Kb ! This is the average size of a common JPG image - AN AVATAR, not a photo !
You should decrease the quality of your JPG, or use Fireworks or Photoshop - Having big avatars can cause much trouble for people with modem browing the site...
Shhhhhhhhhhhhh...
