Nicky Wire: 'The Drums make me feel ill, they've just taken Ian Curtis' dance'

Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire has bemoaned the lack of true rock stars in music today.

The bassist, speaking in this week's issue of NME, suggested that, while there is good music around, none of the current crop of frontmen have true soul.

"There's no shortage of good music being made in the world, but where are the intelligent, outspoken, chaotic and self-destructive rock'n'roll stars?" he asked.

"When I seen bands like The Drums being fawned over, it makes me feel ill," he added. "There is literally no soul in that band. They've taken nothing from the depth or poetry or amazing lyrics of Ian Curtis, they've just taken his kooky dance. The whole generation is attired in American Apparel, there's no individualism any more."

Much as I love outspoken pop star gobshites, Nicky Wire was saying exactly the same thing about Slowdive nearly two decades ago. "We hate Slowdive more we will ever hate Hitler," he reckoned.

Obviously Master Wire's mum & dad didn't have the History Channel back then.

Going to watch the Manics these days is like watching two bands at once.

You have the decent, descending into middle age gracefully band of James Dean Bradfield, Sean Moore and the other contributors.

Then you have the fucktard straight out of 1989 sub standard Manic Street Preachers tribute band involving Nicky Wire.

Yeah, but he is right about the Drums though. Same goes for a lot of other new indie bands...they may get the sound and haircut right, but they add nothing of substance.

Most new indie bands are a crock of crap. Most of them, also, seem to have names that begin with the letter 'K'.

So what gives??

And many indie bands these days get labelled by the media as the 'new _________ (insert any famous band).'

Sooooo tired of comparisons, the guy dances about a bit, that doesn't mean he's Ian Curtis.

Lead singers danced before Ian and they will dance after, so what. Did anyone compare Ian to Freddie Garrity?

Nicky Wire is an old git, living in the past, judging the present through the looking glass of the past.

The younger generation should be allowed to exist without middle aged bores droning on about how much better it was before, and how you're all copying us etc etc...

I'll take Jonny Pierces dancing over the 5000 plus bands trying to "sing" like ian, or play bass like hooky. Atleast the drums do it with their own sense of innovation. My two cents into it.

Give the poor boyo a break, Hibster! It was tough growing up in the Valleys, y'know. They didn't get any Clash records down there until the Spring of 1987 the poor lovelies.

Well I find The Drums amusing and somewhat compelling but they certainly aren't the next revolution by any means. The Manics on the other hand are a classic rock act and one of the best live bands I have ever seen. With respect to the observation that there are no more 'rock stars - frontmen' in rock, Mr Wire is correct. Certainly for the time being.

It's weird cos i saw the Drums live a while back supporting Delphic, and they had a hint of JD and the Smiths about them. I couldn't work out exactly what it was. They were fucking shite though, mind.

I notice the guitarist has now fucked off - returning to the UK to kill Nicky Wire no doubt. Hopefully he doesn't succeed before I see the Manics at Hull City Hall and finally work out whether Wire actually mimes during the performance as t'other one did before he disappeared.

I like The Drums, have their album on constant play in the motor, who the fuck is Nicky Wire? (mind, The Wire was absolute quality)
