15 September 2010 Hooky on Manigate

A few days after Mani's Twitter outburst and subsequent apology, Cerysmatic Factory caught up with Peter Hook in the heart of that London's Soho to get the latest.

On Mani

He's paying for it now and he was very upset about it. He apologised immediately and like I said to him, it's forgotten, it's over. As far as I'm concerned, me and him are fine. Unfortunately with the power of the internet it fucking lasts forever! Anyway, I am happy and he's happy. And we're back to normal and that's it.

On The Light and Freebass

You know what happened, which was really weird, was that The Light and Freebass both came to fruition at the same time. The Joy Division thing started because Macclesfield were gonna do that celebration thing in May. We were gonna do a gig at Macclesfield Town Football Club and they wanted me to help organise it with Steve (Morris) and to get people to sing Joy Division songs with a backing band to celebrate Ian's life. And I thought it really was well overdue because Macclesfield had studiously ignored Ian.

We went for a few meetings, not together, but we went for a few meetings and it was coming along quite well. And then they didn't get the money they wanted, and I thought it was an exorbitant amount of money, and it fell off. I thought the saddest thing in the world was that as New Order we never celebrated anything to do with New Order, 30 years, 25, 20, 10, 1, 6 months, nothing, we never celebrated it and I thought it was well overdue.

On playing Unknown Pleasures

Because I've got The Factory and because I did the opening night and then I read an article by Bobby Gillespie talking about Screamadelica, and I thought "Ding!" I'll do Unknown Pleasures and I'll get the vocalist who stood in for Ian at Bury to sing it. I'll play bass, purely selfishly and we'll have a great time. Alan Hempsall didn't wanna do it. I think he was a bit wary of the internet criticism and Simon Topping was too nervous. He was really nervous. He said "I'll do Transmission but I'm not doing any more". I never thought Simon would be nervous.

So anyway, then I thought, fuck it, "I'll sing it". Don't ask me why I decided that. I needed a bass player then cos I had a great guitarist in Nat, Kehoe's a great drummer, Andy's a great keyboard player (he worked with all of Monaco and Freebass) and then I thought "Jack". Getting your son to play bass and he's exactly the same age as I was when I started Joy Division. So I thought how could you miss an opportunity like that. I looked round and I saw meself thirty years ago. Which is fucking freaky!

Anyway, it was like trying on your wedding suit and it fitted and not only did it fit but it looked fucking great and everybody said "You look fucking great!". And that was what it was like playing the Joy Division stuff. All of a sudden going back to that overshadowed Freebass. Starting a new band is really fucking difficult and even though Bernard and I both seem addicted to it every time New Order got somewhere we always fucking nixed it and started again. It's hard starting a new band and I was just enjoying the Joy Division stuff too much.

And I think that Mani reacted against that. Which is understandable but you can't help it can you!? It's just the way it is. I mean he's going off to do Screamadelica so I said why don't we just leave Freebass, get the record out, you go and do Screamadelica and I'll do Joy Division and we'll see how we feel when get back. It was as simple as that. I think it must've took the hump. But it doesn't matter now, we're fine. I must admit that whilst I was shocked when I saw it, it didn't sound like him to me. I mean, I'm fine now, it's over. It's cool.

Everybody?

As much as I disliked the May Unknown Pleasures gig I thought fair enough its a one-off (then quickly a two-off...then beirut/afghanistan....) with some money going to charity* so thats ok.

The Freebass gigs were not life changing by any stretch but they were nostalgia free and something new.

The thought now that the world's greatest fucking bass player is touring the planet ad infinitum primarily singing and hardly touching his bass is bobbins.

Not a hater here. I just wanna hear Hooky do new stuff not 100% nostalgia.

*Are the charities still getting a cut of this "selective and special" world tour by the way as declared?

Something that would horrify Bernard endlessly... :\ohwell:

Holy fucking dear, who would have thought 30 years ago it would come to this? The whole thing is, well just well so undignified, barrel-scrapingly cringeworthy and the complete antithesis to what JD/NO were about all those years ago. As Deborah Meaden says, i'm out.

Celebrate it?

Only a twat celebrates his own birthday or his own music or his own anything. You let other people do that for ya.

Which they have done, mightily, over the years, through covers and concerts and films and documentaries and remixes etc etc fuckin etc.

God this is sad.

I never thought Hooky was the type to spend hours admiring himself in the mirror.

Way to totally eff up your legacy.

then why do most of the interviews Bernard does nowadays focused on JD and how Blue Monday came about? The nostalgia run by them, especially Hooky, seems so un New Order like. At least they both have made new music - I wish they'd focus on that. Be like Bowie, bury the old stuff for a few years.

I wouldn't exactly put the blame entirely on Bernard...a lot of times interviewers themselves ask those sorts of questions. For example, when Bernard was interviewed in the Japanese mag Rockin' On last autumn, they hardly asked any nostalgia questions about JD---they did manage to ask him something like 'How do you look back upon your career in Joy Division and New Order? And what hopes do you have for Bad Lieutenant in the future?' but he (Bernard) didn't go on and on about Joy Division. Most of that interview was about BL---none of this nostalgia Hacienda/JD stuff.

If interviewers were to ask more about Bernard's or Hooky's present music career (Bernard in BL etc...) there would be less talk about JD and more talk about what kinds of music they're making now (or have made recently).

Which is why it's refreshing for me to look at different interviews Bernard has done w/ different media---even sometimes translated ones from other languages occasionally posted on NOOL. It shows how different media/journos in different countries may ask different questions. (However, I am aware many questions are similar).

Well they did though celeberate the Hacienda's anniversaries back in the 80s...

He added: "I did that too much with New Order and people don't like it, neither did I in the end. What Mani will come to realise is that he is going to have to live with what he did forever and he doesn't need me rubbing his face in it. I'm his friend and we've gone through too much together.”

Yeah, I agree. I'm not too keen on this (no offense, Jack); the whole appeal was getting to see Hooky play a complete set of Joy Division songs.

Over the past 25 years, I've gone to see every other instance of New Order or Revenge or Electronic (even had tix to the cancelled Bad Lieutenant shows) - any time any of them have come to New England or NYC -

But I am skipping Hooky's visits to Boston and NYC. Just not feeling this.

My friends who are much more casual New Order fans, or barely even fans, are going to go see The Light in Boston, cause it is 'Joy Division' (well, Joy Division without the original singer singing, the original bassist playing bass, or either the guitarist or drummer even part of it. Sounds like a ripoff to me.)

Its no different from going to see Tim's Joy Division tribute band.

Seems to bring back memories to that off-beat cover show "The Great Pretenders".

"Great Pretenders is an American half-hour television music game show on Fox Family, hosted by former pop trio Wild Orchid. On the show, teenagers lip sync and dance to their favorite songs for the chance to win prizes. Their performances are judged by a live studio audience. The program's slogan is, "They're the greatest singers... they're the greatest dancers...they're the greeeeat pretenders".

Agreed, no disrespect to Hooky's son as I'm sure he is having a ball and if anyone had the chance to play with Hooky they would go for it.....but......Hooky is a unique player....no-one can replicate how he plays.

I saw him playin with Section 25 last year and he was tearing into the JD basslines...superb....with The Light gigs he only plays on a few as far as I recall.

Hooky to Cerysmatic Factory: ‘He apologised immediately and like I said to him, it's forgotten, it's over’.

Hooky to Q: 'He made a huge mistake... What Mani will come to realise is that he is going to have to live with what he did forever'.

Good, so everything's sorted then.
