A great little song although not ONE of my favourites.I like the way it starts and some good lyrics although NOT very clear. I don't think there is anything seriously BAD about this. Because it was the new NEW ORDER it is special. 80%. ERIC CANTONA cos he had lots of faults aswell.But remember they only kick a ball about and so they are ALL over rated in the great scheme of things.I enjoy being my own hero sometimes cos it is a good thing for your SOUL!:D

The original 7" version of Ceremony is the best vocal he's ever done or perhaps there's not enough whooping & fake mid-Atlantic accent for you ?

William, the original vocal is shrouded in effects which cloud the voice, due primarily to the simple fact Bernard was not the greatest singer at that time. As this was the first official recording of his voice the decision was obviously taken to disguise the less than strong performance, setting the mix back and applying FX. Also, it sounds to me they've attempted to make him sound a bit like Ian Curtis - a bad move on reflection (Movement a good example of further bad moves around that time).

As the years progressed, so did his voice, which has now flourished into its own unique character. As Ceremony was recorded in 1981 a new, better vocal (aka Temptation '98) without the unnecessary effects blended into the original music would sound better. I doubt any serious lover of NO would disagree that his recent live vocal renditions of this mighty powerful song don't trump all over the original effort. It is like chalk and various cheeses.

This is not a dig at NO, I would imagine many bands who migrate through one reason or the other find it difficult to find another identity straight away.

So just to recap for you: Original song = mushy peas on Bernard's vocal New version = better vocal with original music

As regards the whooping. I don't mind Barney or any of the band members getting carried away, I always have the record to play. I quite like the playful nature on stage ... after all, having grown up with their music I also enjoy a bit of candid relief - I can always play 'Closer' when the mood takes me and relive the moment.

I suppose it all depends on your standpoint on what New Order are. I'll always prefer the icy, minimalist version of the band circa 1980, 1981. The vocals on the 7", 1980 recording of Ceremony are, to me, much more moving than even the re-recorded with Gillian version. Likewise I much prefer the 7" Temptation vocals to 12". I was a huge JD fan and to live through the trauma of IC's death and to see the band reborn was a unique experience. I think the early NO material can only really be appreciated when taken in context with the sense of loss and resurrection that submerged us then. I saw them in Glasgow in early '81 and it was a near-religious experience, people just stood and stared while they played sombre-faced, bathed in a solid blue/green light, the epitome of post-punk rejection of 'rock 'n roll, maaaan'. The music and emotions washed over us all - it was utterly overwhelming. As the years progressed, I felt predictably let down by the band when they couldn't maintain the remarkable tension of their early material. I've seen them live countless times through the years and slowly but surely they've taken on all the trappings of the rock 'n roll crap they originally were the antithesis of. So, to me, for them to interfere with those early recordings would be akin to Bon Jovi trying to play Decades, pointless and faintly disgusting, like a fat, greasy old letch pawing his young secretary.

Sorry to sound so pompous but this band were once important, they really mattered.

I take your point William. And I agree with almost all you state. I am also a long term follower of both bands.

Can I just clarify that the thought of re-touching any of the old masters is tantamount to blasphemy, and the very thought sends shudders up and down my spinal column. However, time has passed, and nothing can take the intensity away from any of us - even if NO re-introduced a vocal track to an old recording. Of all the JD / NO material Ceremony is the 'only' song I would personally like to hear with Bernard's vocal more prominent and defined. No memory will be dented or damaged by this. It cannot have any more intensity than the original, as you rightly say, this cannot happen as non of us (except Rocket Mick) are living in 1980/81.

Substance 1987 was the real image snuffler - fiddling with 'Confusion' and 'Temptation' was a poor decision. As I've rambled on about in the past, a greatest hits album should really contain the original songs, and not bits of sandwiches and crisps left on the sideboard the night before.

A new vocal on the original Ceremony on a forthcoming rare release package is all I ask ... I wouldn't want, nor dare to suggest, altering the past or that the original recordings weren't ever good enough. They could call it 'Ceremony for those who haven't wooden ears' (or something like that).

Come back when you've got your stats. at hand - I think you'll find he broke plenty of records, and caused concern to every manager that witnessed his name on the team list.

Tell me, will Liverpool ever achieve a minor percentage of their former glories - I doubt it?. Such a shame. Keep trying though.

Firstly Steven Gerrard no panache? Did you see him turn Didi Hamann inside out in the England v Germany game? his passing is possibly his strongest point and he's still only 22. Think you've picked a poor target for comparison there. If country bumpkin Le Tissier ever got of his fat arse to play for a side who ever competed for anything we might be able to judge him as player. Instead he showboated his way through his career performing circus tricks at a no-mark club.

As for causing managerial strees hmmm. It's probably not that stressful winning 3-1 instead of 3-0. What records by the way. Don't tell me, he's Southampton's record goal scorer.

Those three trophies we won in 2001 probably count towards minor percentages. Still as long as we're head and shoulders above everyone else with our 18+4 I'll be able to sleep easy without worrying too much about the short term.

She's moved into Emmerdale hasn't she. She has matured well. I dig her shit. Considering the shape of Matthew's beak he is possibly a lucky chap - she obviously recognised natural skill. It is a great shame he left his original wife but Marilyn, I'm sure, had plenty to offer.

Erm, Marilyn was the last time I watched a daytime soap. I'm usually in work until 3am and then I go running with the owls.

Emmerdale is on somewhere in the region of 7.00pm I recall seeing it before champions league football on ITV. I've seen no mention of said baby though. Perhaps it's pre-schooling in Colorado and about to be woven into a future plot-line.
