Apparently Bernard is lined up to submit a remix to the upcoming Depeche Mode remix album. According to the reliable DM fan site Home he is among the confirmed remixers, along with former DM members Alan Wilder and Vince Clarke. It is however not yet confirmed which song Bernard is working on.

Isn't there a story that Bernard was soooo fucked on E after Electronic supported DM on the World Violation Tour - and that whole tour was fuelled by E, and hard partying.
Now, this is a real surprise.
Do you remember the Channel 4 (UK TV show) hosted by Jo Whiley that Bernard and the Prodigy frontman were guests on? "Well maybe not in Essex" - Bernard pulling rank.
I agree that Enjoy The Silence would be his choice of track to remix. Martin Gore originally composed this song as a ballad, before Alan Wilder turned it into a worldwide top ten smash, so it would be very interesting to see what Bernard could do with it.
And just a little more DM - I didn't know about this! Shows I've not been on the forums much lately!

I do reckon Bernard likes the Killers, though. I remember an interview with Phil Cunningham in a Japanese online music site, and he said that they (him, Bernard, and Jake) once went to a Killers gig together.
And as someone else said in this thread, Electronic were the supporting act for DM once in 1990, right?
I thought Hooky was a bit disparaging towards DM around the Republic era. I remember reading an article where PH was pretty critical of the 'I Feel You' video in a review.

I've always been surprised that their paths haven't crossed in the past. Yes Electronic supported DM for some US shows on their Violator tour. I'm sure they all know each other pretty well having been on the circuit for the same amount of time. Looking forward to hearing the collaboration.

Electronic opened to Depeche in 1990. Got this gig here somewhere in one of my old CD boxes

IIRC New Order supported DM at Valby in Denmark in 1986.
I saw DM at the GMex in 1987, just before they were even more massive. I was right at the front, looked around and there was Hooky tapping his feet to Strangelove.

In fact, I nominate Bernard to produce the next DM album, they need it. Since Ultra Ive found the albums to be quite laboured and samey (notable exceptions being 'Precious' and ' Perfect')

Agreed. Ultra was really good. Precious was superb but the last 3 albums have been patchy. They are missing Alan Wilder as a writer and a musician.

Ive always thought that and thats what drove me to waste some beer tokens on one of his solo efforts. Lets just say I was expecting Recoil to be a sort of Violator/SOF&D type effort and it really wasnt/isnt.
Funny how the good music really is a joint effort. Take one piece of the jigsaw away and its just not the same, and equally on their own the individuals dont achieve the same level.
Me too I was a die hard DM fan but after Utlra they have not done anyting that is worth talking about, their last 2 albums were very dark and boring, by the way David Gahan is always in NYC walking around everywhere.

I didn't like Ultra or Exciter, but I did like their last two albums. That's just the melancholy me.

Agreed on the muscian bit, but surely they don't miss him as a writer. He only ever wrote 5 songs for DM (and co-wrote another 3 with Martin Gore).

True, however he was also the brains behind the production from Some Great Reward onwards (he worked tirelessly with the engineer to get the tracks finished while the others went on holiday). He also transformed some of Martin Gore's songs into hits; Enjoy The Silence being a good example.
He was integral to Songs Of Faith & Devotion (my favourite I think), keeping the fraying edges together as the band drifted apart. Banging away at the drums on his own in a room (remind you of another drummer.....!?). A talented guy.

I don't know I thought "Playing The Angel" was good, Sounds Of The Universe is weak though.
"Lilian" is one of my all-time favourites...

Having thought about this, I can clearly see Bernard Sumner doing something with the 6th track on Sounds Of The Universe, called In Sympathy.
The song sounds very similar to World (The Price Of Love), and considering I haven't yet heard a half-decent remix of this song to date, there's every opportunity he could do both bands a huge favour.

Yes, Martin provided about half of the financing for Control as a favor to Anton Corbijn when Corbijn was low on funds.
As for Alana Wilder, he was/is a talented musician and arranger with a great ear for production.
But Martin Gore is a brilliant songwriter. I saw him perform solo in LA in 2003. He did voice and piano versions of his Depeche Mode songs and the were just as beautiful and moving as the fully produced ones.
Listening to Martin Gore's recently released demo's for DM songs reveals that 85 percent of the finished released DM songs are his vision, with polishing from Wilder. ETS is an exception, as it was Wilder's idea to give it a house beat. But this notion that Wilder was the songwriting brains behind DM is absurd. Gore still writes great songs, "Precious, "Lillian", and "In Symptathy" being recent favorites of mine.

Perhaps the poster meant the music rather than the words. I do remember reading in the biog that Wilder was, er, instrumental in the musical arrangements, including the live arrangments, during the Black Celebration to SOF&D era.

Martin Gore wrote the words AND music. The lyrics, melodies, and chrod structures of the songs are his. Whilder helped with productiona nd arrangement, that is not actually writing the music. Gore wrote the music and lyric. Refer to his demo versions of DM songs, some of them are very similar to the finished, released songs.
