I don't understand why people are so against 'Such a good thing'. Each to their own I suppose. The most articulate criticism I have heard of this song is that it ripped off Monaco (which is about the same as saying The Beatles ripped off Wings) Also, is it entirely fair to slag off 'Turn the Heater On'? It is a cover after all.. CTB

Why is everybody so against World in Motion? It was a good song for the purpose it served.

Hello gentlemen nice to meet you. I've been lurking around for the last couple days and when I bumped into this thread I just HAD to register.

You might as well get your chains, pitch forks and your guns because I am going to go the record and officially state that I'm probably the only one here that loves Republic and think it's NO's best album. I sincerely don't understand why so many people hate it. Times Change, Everyone Everywhere, Spooky, Ruined in a Day and World are some of NO's best tracks IMO. You're probably thinking "Well, you probably just got into them and were introduced to their music through Republic"...not true. I've been listening to them since Substance first came out and Touched By the Hand of God and True Faith were the first two songs I were exposed to and fell in love with the band since then.

I would really like to hear your opinions explaining what's so terrible about Republic. Is it the "dancy" nature of the album? Is it so hard to warm up to NO's dance/soul side and just allow it to grow on you? I mean. If you think about it, quite a few of the tracks on Technique are just as Dancy/poppish as the ones on Republic yet I don't hear anyone complain about it for that album, which is also brilliant. So please if you could give me some good reasons why you cringe at songs like Liar, Times Change, etc.

As for the worst of NO, (puts on flame retartend suit) just take Crystal and 60mph off Get Ready and you have my list...seriously.

Funny you should said that ISAMU cos I have wondered myself the same. I am not a great fan of The Republican but I do not HATE it. It's got in it two jewels, namely Regret and Special and a handful of very good songs as well.

Possible reasons for hating it:

1- The conspicuous absence of Hooky's bass.

2- The even more conspicuous presence of Steven Hague. The whole album is overproduced and veering too much towards a distinct Petshopboyish sound.

3- The fact that it was perceived as a Barney's solo effort with The Other Three relegated to Sideshow Bob, second banana status.

4- The fact that it was New Order's first outing with London Records and as such they were perceived as having sold their indepent souls.

5- It came after Substance/True Faith/1963/TBTHOG/Technique/. New Order had painted themselves into a corner by creating such impossibly high standards.

6- With the massive success of Regret and after The Rèpublican were bleed dry of singles by London Records it was perceived by true-blue-I-was-partying-with-Ian-Curtis more-than-once fans as a soft port of entry for new-wasnot-that-Ian-Curtis-the-bloke-who-played-the-flute-in-Jethro-Tull fans. They were mightily unimpressed.

Having said that Isamu, you'll be happy to know that there is a whole school of thought that agrees with you in considering Republic the best New Order album. I have at least two friends who think so.

Now, why is ever more people not bothering to register, I wonder?

Hi BUDVAR,trust you have had a good rest.:D I actually love REPUBLIC but only have two copies of this.I always thought that this album ,set against what was being played at that time STOOD out.Of course they had set high standards before this,but then again JOY DIVISION had set even HIGHER standards.So i am with you on this one BUDVAR.Being a big PET SHOP BOY'S fan i am sure that this album was more in tune with a lot of the other stuff i listened to.Music is for the INDIVIDUAL and it is good to have different reactions to the same songs.LOW LIFE is probably still my favouite but was out at a GREAT time in my life which can affect the way an album is remembered. Republic was, BTW the last record I bought on vinyl and I remember the attendant looking at me like if I were very, very strange.

Why oh why do you insist on including remixes on this list? They're NOT made by the Order, you must know that! And... if you're NO fans, why do you dislike so many songs? There's really only ONE lousy tune, "We all stand". THAT ONE IS TRULLY ATROCIOUS!

Sorry i lost a lot of e-mails in a purge of old ones so may have missed it there.I must admit that i DO not own this on VINYL.Along with the STANDARD SUBSTANCE these seem to be the only vinyl NEW ORDER...tell a lie,also not got GET READY on vinyl too,missing from the VINYL ORDER.At the time i chased the LIMITED RUN and was chuffed with that and somehow overlooked the LP.Keep on posting good HUBER Rocket Mick

Yes my good friend, but the point is this: remixes being the work of other people, how can you say, for instance, that Subculture's 12" mix is a bad NO song? It is, indeed, the product of a very sick, twisted, mind, but it's John Cuntrobie's fault, not NO's! Yes, they endorsed it by allowing it's release, but that's an error of judgement (or plain bad taste...) not bad songwriting!

That's a fair point Jorge. You are right.

I remember getting home with THAT 12" and feeling an overwhelming sense that I had been given the wrong record.

I agree with much of what has been listed, with the exception of "Shellshock", which really isn't all that bad, and especially "All Day Long"... I love that one - put it on a mix tape (CD) that I made for someone recently. I say take Republic and chop off Regret, and then you've got a quick and easy "Worst of" album :)

Is it me or most of you wackos way off track? There are only a handful of bad tracks such as:

1. Player in the League (real crap; sounds like 3rd rate DM
2. Chemical (argh)
3. Shellshock (just didn't hold up over the years)
4. Truth ( ugg..terribly grating..)
5. MTO (not much of anything really)
6. Avalanche (boooring...)
7. Subculture (12" version only...crappy arrangement)

to everyone who says that Fine Time, Ecstasy, State of the Nation and We All Stand are bad songs.... :moon:

1. Ruined In A Day (Sly & Robie Remix).. or whatever..
2. 60 Miles An Hour (Supermen Lovers Remix)
3. Crystal (Steven K Intro Mix).. again, or whatever...
4. Every Little Counts <-- would work best if there were an accapella version

I agree with Fine Time. And I do like State of the Nation, but its remix, Shame of the Nation, has to be the worst remix of a song since the Beach for Blue Monday.
