In the past, you've mentioned that you're not fans of Joy Division, Interpol or Editors. What is it about these bands that you are not so fond of? Why do you think people compare you to them?

I don't personally like the "punk" qualities to Joy Division much. I have never been a fan of punk music. My favourite Ramones album is 'Too Tough To Die', put it that way. And I have just never got round to listening to an Editors record. Loads of people seem to love them so I am sure they're good at what they do. I think people compare us to them because Harry sings in a baritone and we are I suppose some of our songs and instrumentation is quite melancholic.

Joy Division? Punk? :confused2: Anyway, I'm not a fan of music journalists comparing certain bands to certain bands many times---such as 'they are the next (insert any band here)'.

We left them with a hard act to follow at Paredes de Coura festival last July in Portugal. Crowd were still singing Love Will Tear Us Apart throughout their entire set. I doubt that helped.

It sounds like he's sick of being frequently compared to certain bands by lazy muso hacks ("You sound a bit Joy Division-ey?" = lazy) so he's kicking back against it with a stroppy riposte. Either that or he really doesn't like Joy Division which I would find staggering as his band have clearly ripped off "that" sound on more than a few occasions. As has been pointed out even the promo shot of the three of them included in that article looks more than a little like the Peel Sessions cover by Mr A Corbijn.

I'll admit that I quite like (some of) White Lies. I had the first album on heavy rotation a couple of years ago and there's a handful of good tracks on the second LP which came out recently. I'd recommend checking out the first 2-3 tracks on the debut before totally writing them off. Not too shabby and well, if you like Joy Division you'll probably like "Death" at least.

As a band however they are completely unoriginal seemingly nicking huge swathes of their sound from The Cure, Joy Division and various other post-punk bands. But once you acknowledge and listen past that some of the songs can be enjoyable.

Nowt groundbreaking though.

First album was really good... I've cooled on them on second, although not listened to it, to be fair. They needed to progress, but from the little I've heard, they just pressed the straight to stadium act button.

They have been working ridiculously hard though. Must be hard for these posh boys. Might have been more advisable to tell the record company to foff and release second album at their own pace.

Got to say they are very tight live, and you can't knock a place to hide.

Here's a bad video i took last year of them at Brixton amongst a load of petulant teenagers. Drummer definitely has a touch of Mr Morris about him.

First album was good to be fair, the new stuff is very poor though, I doubt there will be a third.

Their new single Strangers is absolutely cracking. A great track. Not heard the rest of the second album Ritual yet though. It must be demoralising to be consistently compared to bands that have gone before. I can understand that they end up denying it. Interpol get it too. I love them but their last album was a let down for me.
