new order "too late" acetate on ebay

i was initially intrigued, but am somewhat dubious as to its authenticity. for an acetate that, if real, would be close to 30 years old, it looks to be in amazing condition. what further raises doubt is that it seems pretty easy to fake acetates these days, as the equipment is readily available for djs who want to specify grooves. it also seems to include a music centre sleeve - the same company that pressed the murder acetate ( for your reference: http://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Murder/release/2616147 ).

what strikes me as odd is that there is no label affixed to the acetate - every music centre acetate included their custom labels. wouldn't there have been some trace of this acetate by some collector, somewhere?

of course, it could be an exceedingly rare copy of a studio version of 'too late'....who knows....

I think it's genuine enough. Check the other auctions from the seller, plenty of Strange Fruit white labels and test pressings as well as other interesting oddities. There's another acetate from Ultravox that has the missing track from their Strange Fruit 1977 Peel Session release, and it states that written on the Music Centre paper sleeve so there's clearly a connection with the label and the acetates.

Ask the seller, I reckon it's either label related or stock from a BBC music library.

Of course it's most likely the same version we all know, so one for the obsessive collectors.

That Murder acetate is mine. This one's hard to call though. As stated, the Music Centre acetates did have company labels but the sleeve looks authentic. I'd like to see more of the sleeve and close-ups of the vinyl itself.

Also keen to hear confirmation of whether this is the garden variety version.

My guess would be that it is the same version. This session was recorded independently of the BBC (unusually), and was done in Strawberry (North or South, not sure). Therefore it's a little unlikely that the band would supply anything other than the finished versions that we all know.

It would be handy if the seller could digitise some of it for reference though.

Very nice acetate, depthcharge and johnny you are a fountain of knowledge. I would tend to agree that it is likely the same version given that ther seller, as johnny pointed out, is selling strange fruit related items. Seller may be reticent to digitise given the few plays an acetate could provide before sound degradation kicks in. Would be awfully nice though. The item just struck me as odd after people at joydiv.org questioned the authenticity of a set of unkown pleasures US acetates.

nah, i'll likely refrain; it is already near $150 and to me an acetate is the type of item where i would like to have no doubts as to its provenance. a few tpk test pressers and the bbc transcription lp have recently set me back a bit as well...

Incidentally, from the seller:

This item came in with a batch of other promos, test pressings and acetates purchased from a producer in the music business. It is only a 1-Sided Acetate so there is no B side. It has the number A33294 and the word APOLLO etched on the non-playing side.

Love the listing for the blue Monday acetate that just popped up. Minimum bid is 649.00, but the seller states there is no reserve.....interesting spin.

Pretty amusing endprice......... Its clearly not a production sample, so I would venture that this was some listening piece for a connected strange fruit insider. But the seller has the another cut from a different studio - perhaps shopping around services? Ill stick to the vinyl release.

They may have been doing test cuts to decide where they would eventually cut the release, it was the first Strange Fruit 12" so they'd have to find out where best to do it.

If it's a playable size it's never a production cut, a laquer for a 12" release is around 15" in size. If it's a 12" cut on a 12" acetate then it's for playing not manufacture.

That's ridiculous. Over £300 for a one sided piece of acetate. Unbelievably stupid.

I'm not overly surprised; I figured £250 or so. It's rare to get a pressing that could be truly unique, especially a non-single track. In an age where you can pick up most NO rarities fairly easily, items like these set your collection apart.
