In what could be termed homecoming gigs, following a string of international dates throughout 2011. Peter Hook And The Light play two intimate concerts at The Lowry’s Quays Theatre on Friday 18th November and Saturday 19th November where the band will perform both of the Joy Division albums together in one evening for the first time.
Playing both Joy Division’s debut album “Unknown Pleasures” and its follow up, the final album “Closer” sequentially and in full, both Martin Hannett produced albums are considered seminal, much loved classics and the influence of both LPs remains pervasive today, both for fans and for the many emerging bands who take on the template of Joy Division’s sound in the modern era.
Running through the albums in track order, “Unknown Pleasures”, “simply one of the best records ever made, and still powerful enough to floor you 10/10” (NME), sees The Light start with “Disorder” and follow up with “Insight”, “New Dawn Fades”, “She’s Lost Control” before finishing the LP’s performance with “I Remember Nothing”.
The Light will then turn to Closer, whose haunting, austere atmosphere and emotive content is considered a “start to finish masterpiece”* (Pitchfork Media). As Hannett’s incandescent production permeates the record alongside a band that had grown much in confidence since their debut, Closer also yielded many landmark Joy Division tracks including “Atrocity Exhibition, “Heart And Soul”, and “Twenty Four Hours”.
Both of The Lowry concerts take place in the all seater Quays Theatre providing a new and different environment in which to take in The Light’s respectful renditions of the much admired and enduring albums.
Supports slots at the concerts are to be filled by Super White Assassins at the Friday 18th concert and humanizer on Saturday 19th, both of whom are soon to be released on Hacienda Records, the new digital label which also released The Light’s debut EP “1102 / 2011” in May of this year.
